Coffee and chocolate are a well-beloved duo that complement and enhance each other in every form they take, whether it’s chocolate-covered espresso beans or a mocha with whipped cream.
This deliciously chocolatey homemade coffee creamer is a super simple version to make, requires zero cooking, and can be less expensive than buying directly from the store.
It’ll enhance your morning coffee splendidly!
What You’ll Need
- 16 oz (or bigger) Mason Jar with Lid
- Label for creamer
- Half & Half
- Heavy Whipping Cream
- Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Cocoa Powder
- Vanilla Extract
Coffee creamer has three key components: a dairy base, a sweetener, and flavor.
We like to use half & half and heavy whipping cream for the richest and creamiest dairy base, but this can easily be substituted for just milk or a non-dairy alternative.
For sweetening the creamer we use sweetened condensed milk which adds more thickness and richness.
Alternatives would be sugar (which would need to be melted down into the milk using a saucepan) or Stevia extract for a sugar-free option.
To get that delicious chocolatey taste, we’ve gone directly to the source itself: unsweetened cocoa powder. It requires zero melting down and mixes easily into the milk.
Adding just a little vanilla extract helps bring out the chocolate tones even more.
Chocolate Coffee Creamer Recipe
Coffee creamer is simple and we keep it that way by adding all ingredients into a mason jar container and shaking them together.
Starting with the sweetened condensed milk, you’ll then add the cocoa powder and vanilla extract.
Mix together slightly to help the cocoa powder get distributed evenly.
Then add your heavy whipping cream and half & half, secure your lid on the mason jar, and shake, shake, shake!
You can also stir to combine or use a milk frother to mix more thoroughly.
Once done, label with the date made and the best buy date on the creamers. Most creamer will last 15-20 days in a fridge, but be sure the creamer doesn’t expire before that date.
Alternatives
As mentioned previously, it’s very easy to use alternative ingredients for any of the ones listed in the recipe. The main thing to consider is what consistency you want in your creamer.
Coffee creamers are traditionally creamier and thicker than milk, but if you prefer a thinner creamer, you can substitute the heavy whipping cream and half & half for whole milk.
If you need a lactose-free alternative, check out Silk’s Dairy Free Heavy Whipping Cream and Lactaid Half & Half to keep the same richness and creaminess.
For dairy-free options, we highly recommend Oatly Heavy Whipping Cream combined with oat milk for the richest alternatives. You can also substitute with your own preferred milk alternatives like almond milk or soy milk.
Stevia extract or Splenda make great 0-calorie and sugar-free alternatives that you can use in place of sweetened condensed milk.
Cocoa powder is the easiest and most hassle-free option for sourcing the chocolate element, so we really don’t recommend finding an alternative for this.
However, you can always melt down some baking chocolate into the sweetened condensed milk or use chocolate syrup (although this will add sweetness and we suggest cutting down, or out, the sweetened condensed milk).
