What Is Irish Cream?

The traditional Irish cream recipe consists of Irish whiskey, cream, and sugar (or your favorite sugar substitute).

People have enjoyed this creamy concoction straight, on the rocks, or in mixed drinks since 1973 when a team of developers, under the direction of Tom Jago, at Gilbeys of Ireland created it.

Gilbeys, a division of International Distillers & Vintners (IDV), desperately needed a new product to sell internationally.

The team met this need with a drink, a combination of Irish whiskey, cream, and sweeteners, but the beverage still needed a name.

Finally, they decided it would be called Baileys Irish cream, named after R.A. Bailey, a fictional character whose moniker comes from the Bailey Hotel in London.

Baileys, the original Irish cream, still dominates the market decades later, but it isn’t the only product of its kind. Several other companies — Kerrygold, Carolans, and Saint Brendan’s, to name a few — have created versions of the cream liqueur, too.

Irish cream fanatics love the taste of it so much that there’s been a boom in non-alcoholic beverages that boast the same flavors as Irish cream.

That’s where Irish cream coffee creamer comes into play.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Homemade Irish Cream Coffee Creamer

Irish Cream Coffee Creamer Ingredients

You’ll Need

The Process

Step One

pouring condensed milk, espresso powder, and cocoa powder into a saucepan

First, pour milk, condensed milk, espresso powder, and cocoa powder into a saucepan.

Let the ingredients warm over a low to medium flame, whisking until everything is well-blended.

We used whole milk, but if you don’t drink regular milk, you can use any non-dairy milk alternative — almond milk, oat milk, etc. — you’d like.

Step Two

espresso-flavored milk mixture and vanilla and almond extracts

Then, remove the chocolatey, espresso-flavored milk mixture from the heat and add the vanilla and almond extracts.

Whisk or stir the homemade creamer one more time to ensure all the powdered ingredients have dissolved and to evenly distribute the extracts’ flavors throughout it.

Step Three

Let the creamer cool before transferring it to an airtight container or pouring it into your cup of hot or iced coffee.

An Irish Cream Creamer Q&A

Does Irish Cream Creamer Have Alcohol in It?

No, Irish cream coffee creamer does not have any alcohol. It does, however, have all the flavors of the classic liqueur. You get all of the sweet goodness without the buzz.

What Flavor Is Irish Cream Creamer?

Whether it’s store-bought or homemade creamer, if it’s Irish cream-flavored, it will taste sweet with notes of cocoa and vanilla. Your taste buds might pick up on hints of brown sugar, too.

How Long Does Homemade Creamer Last?

As long as you keep it in a lidded, airtight container (like a mason jar, for example), your homemade Irish cream coffee creamer will keep in your refrigerator for about a week.

Enjoy Irish Cream-Flavored Coffee Any Time

Some people hold off on enjoying Irish cream-flavored joe until the winter holiday season, but we think it makes a satisfying after-dinner coffee all year long.

Give this recipe a go, then pour a splash of the homemade creamer into a freshly brewed cup (made with fresh-ground coffee beans, of course), and take in the taste of Irish cream with your kick of caffeine.
