Nothing perks up your morning cup of coffee like a delicious and flavorful coffee creamer. We love making creamers that are on par with store-bought brands while being cheap and easy to make!
If you’ve loved our other homemade coffee creamer ideas like Pumpkin Spice or Vanilla, you’re going to love this hazelnut version made with very simple ingredients!
What You’ll Need
- Mason Jar with lid
- Labels
- Half & Half
- Heavy Cream
- Hazelnut Syrup (or Hazelnut Extract)
- Milk Frother or Hand blender (optional)
Not only does this Hazelnut Coffee Creamer use just three ingredients, but it can be made directly into a mason jar that’s perfect for easy storage and pouring.
You can use something as simple as a sticky note or masking tape for a label – no need for anything fancy! Just make note of the day made and the expiration date of the creamers.
If shaking the ingredients together in the jar isn’t an option for you, using a milk frother or hand blender is a great way to mix up the coffee creamer inside the mason jar!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups half & half
- 1/2 cups heavy cream
- 1/3 cups hazelnut syrup (or 1 tablespoon of hazelnut extract)
Hazelnut Coffee Creamer Recipe
Pour all three ingredients into your mason jar. Securely fasten the lid and shake vigorously (or use a milk frother or hand blender if preferred).
Label and date with today’s date and “best by” date from either creamer (use the date that’s closest). Most creamers will last 10-15 days after being made but may last longer.
What’s Different?
If you’re familiar with our Sweet Cream Coffee Creamer Recipe, which we use as our base recipe, you’ll notice that our Hazelnut Coffee Creamer recipe is slightly different.
Instead of using sweetened condensed milk for a sweetener and adding a flavor extract, we’ve used a coffee flavor syrup for both the sweetness and flavor elements.
We wanted to show alternative ways to sweeten a homemade creamer, especially one that is sugar-free. Also, hazelnut extract isn’t as widely available as flavors like vanilla extract.
Homemade coffee creamers are very easy to make and adjust to your preferred taste. Read on to learn about alternative ingredients you can use to make the perfect creamer for your morning coffee.
Alternative Ingredients
If you want to make a dairy-free version of this recipe, we suggest using oat milk for a cream base. Oat milk tends to be richer than other non-dairy options and some stores even offer a heavy oat cream.
Other lactose-free options would be using Lactaid milk and Silk Dairy-Free Whipping Cream.
The great thing about this recipe is you can really use whatever creamer base you like best. Using the measurements, you can substitute any ingredients with your preferred ingredients to make it the perfect homemade creamer for you.
Some alternative options for the hazelnut flavor include using a hazelnut extract that is alcohol based. This may give a brighter and bolder flavor burst to the creamer than the flavored syrup.
If you use an extract, you’ll need to find a substitute for a sweetener. We suggest using sweetened condensed milk for a rich, smooth sweetness.
But if you want to keep it sugar-free, you can always use a stevia extract or artificial sweetener like Splenda.
FAQ
Can You Make Dairy-Free Hazelnut Coffee Creamer?
Yes! You can use alternative cream bases like oat milk and cream or dairy-free options from brands like Silk.
How Do You Add Hazelnut Flavor to Coffee?
You can add hazelnut flavor to your coffee by using a hazelnut extract or a hazelnut-flavored syrup. Hazelnut extract has an alcohol base while hazelnut syrup has a sweetened syrup base that adds sweetness.
How Do You Make a Good Coffee Creamer?
Coffee creamers have three main elements to consider – a creamy base (we like to use a combination of half & half and heavy cream), a sweetener (we like to use sweetened condensed milk), and a flavor (natural flavor extracts work best for purest flavor).
What Type Of Coffee Goes Well With Hazelnut Creamer?
As implied by its name, a hazelnut is a nut with sweet undertones. Adding hazelnut creamer to a medium or light roast coffee would help draw out that coffee’s nutty-tasting notes.
Look for tasting notes such as – nutty, earthy, and chocolatey for a good pairing roast.
