Homemade Peppermint Cold Brew Recipe: A Festive Cup of Joy

“Minty fresh” isn’t just a description for your chewing gum or toothpaste anymore. Now, it applies to your coffee, too! Adding peppermint flavor to your cup of cold brew is an easy way to give it a more festive feel during the winter holidays (or whenever you feel a peppermint craving coming on).

While generally helpful, we don’t think the dates on the calendar determine when the winter holiday season has officially begun. Only one thing indicates that ’tis the season: when peppermint-flavored drinks return to the coffee shops!

But who says you can’t enjoy minty-fresh joe before November or December? Have the right recipe on standby — like this one for peppermint cold brew, for instance — and you can sip this seasonal favorite flavor whenever you want.

The Process

Step 1:

cold brew coffee

Since this recipe is based on a cold brew drink, let’s start with brewing fresh cold brew.

Combine ground coffee and water in a large glass and leave the mixture in the fridge for 12-24 hours.

Step 2:

Dropping a few ice cubes into a tall glass and pouring cold brew over them

Drop a few ice cubes into a tall glass and pour cold brew over them. Because we think fresher is better, we recommend pulling out the cold brew coffee maker and making a fresh batch of chilled java the day before you plan to make this drink. However, you can use store-bought cold brew if you want to keep things easy.

Step 3:

Combining the coffee creamer with about half a teaspoon

Combine the coffee creamer or milk of your choice with about half a teaspoon of peppermint extract in a separate cup or frothing pitcher.

These ingredients make your drink creamy and provide the delicious peppermint flavor you’re craving. Then, use your milk frother to blend the two liquids into a layer of subtly minty foam.

Step 4:

Pouring the peppermint-infused creamer or milk over the coffee

Finish off this cold brew recipe by pouring the peppermint-infused creamer or milk over the coffee, stir in a bit of liquid sweetener if you’d like, and enjoy!

FAQs

How does Starbucks make peppermint cold brew?

There is no peppermint cold brew on the Starbucks menu. Thankfully, the coffee shop’s cold brew is customizable, so giving your serving of the signature cold brew blend a minty kick won’t be hard.

Just ask the barista to add a few pumps of peppermint syrup to your cold foam or directly into your coffee — or both if you want the taste of peppermint to be super-prominent.

Is there peppermint mocha cold brew?

Like the plain peppermint cold brew, peppermint mocha cold brew (that is, cold brew with chocolate AND peppermint flavors added) is not a Starbucks menu item. However, you can easily create your own by customizing your cold brew order.

Request a few pumps of mocha and peppermint syrups; the exact amounts will vary depending on your preferences. Feel free to add a layer of peppermint and/or mocha-infused cold foam to your drink, too.

Can you add peppermint extract to iced coffee?

Yes, you can add peppermint extract to iced coffee*. It’s an easy way to give your morning joe a minty-fresh upgrade. Besides, peppermint is good for you! The herb has been linked to easing symptoms of poor digestion, like gas, bloating, and indigestion. Plus, it may relieve headaches, improve energy levels, clear clogged sinuses, and more.

Should you decide to add peppermint extract to your iced coffee, remember less is more. A quarter to a half teaspoon of the stuff should be plenty; any more than that, and you risk drowning out the coffee’s flavor.

*Note: iced coffee and cold brew are NOT the same. We have an article explaining the differences here.

Explained briefly, iced coffee is brewed with hot water and then left to chill. On the other hand, cold-brewed beans never come in contact with hot water; instead, the coffee grounds steep in cold or room-temperature water for a few hours before being filtered out.

Can you cold brew peppermint tea?

The process of cold-brewing peppermint tea is the same as cold-brewing coffee.

Drop a few spoonfuls of peppermint tea leaves into a lidded container, pour cold or room temperature water over them, return the lid to the vessel, and let the mixture steep in the refrigerator for a few hours.

Fortunately, tea leaves steep more quickly than coffee grounds do. You can end up with a decent, drinkable cuppa in one or two hours. However, if you want more pronounced flavors, you should let the leaves steep overnight.

Perk Up with Peppermint

Just when you thought cold brew couldn’t be more energizing, peppermint extract came along and showed the power it adds to a cup of joe.

The end result of this recipe is subtle and not sweet. However, it still manages to give your drink some extra edge. That little peppermint-induced kick in the pants is just what you need to get into high gear on a long day.

Happy Caffeinating!
