If you ask us, all the best winter holiday coffee beverages contain a few pumps of peppermint syrup; something about that flavor screams “‘Tis the season,” no?
But there’s a downside to these peppermint drinks: many of them are hot coffee beverages, which means iced coffee lovers are out of luck — or are they?
No, they’re not, thanks to the existence of the peppermint mocha cold brew. When served over ice, the mix of peppermint, chocolate, and coffee is a refreshing kick in the pants that’s perfect for fueling all of your winter (or summer…or spring…or fall…) activities, and we’re going to show you how to make it.
Before you get into the step-by-step instructions for making this coffee drink, we want to note that we used coffee beans from our friends at Atlas Coffee Club to make the beverage’s cold brew base.
You can read about the Texas-based company in our detailed Atlas Coffee Club review and factory tour.
Mad About the Mocha
The mocha is a regular latte with chocolate syrup added to the mix. With that information, you can probably guess the peppermint mocha recipe: espresso, milk, chocolate syrup, and a few pumps of peppermint syrup.
If you’re feeling extra fancy, you might even top the chocolatey, minty brew with a dollop of whipped cream and crushed peppermint candy.
Fortunately, the combination of peppermint and chocolate translates well to cold coffee drinks too, a fact proven by the existence of the peppermint mocha cold brew.
The Starbucks secret menu item is created by ordering a venti cold brew coffee with two pumps of peppermint, four pumps of mocha, and cold foam with two pumps of peppermint added to it.
Since peppermint syrup is available at Starbucks year-round, you can enjoy a cold cup of delicious chocolate peppermint coffee anytime the mood strikes.
But, of course, if you want to enjoy the stuff without having to leave the house and wait in a long coffee shop line, there’s only one thing to do: learn how to make it at home. We’ve got you covered there.
Make the Most Delicious Peppermint Mocha Cold Brew
You’ll Need:
- 1 tablespoon of peppermint syrup
- 1/2 teaspoon of chocolate syrup
- Cold brew coffee
- 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder
- 1/3 cup of milk or coffee creamer
- 1/2 teaspoon of peppermint extract
- Ice cubes
- Tall glass
- Milk frother
- Frothing pitcher
The Process:
Step 1:
Unsurprisingly, this cold brew-based recipe starts with brewing fresh cold brew.
So, pull out your cold brew maker the night before you plan to enjoy this chocolate peppermint cold brew drink; the coarsely ground coffee beans will need to steep in cold water for 12 to 24 hours before you can strain them and serve the java.
Step 2:
Once your batch of brew is ready to drink, fill the tall glass with ice and add the coffee, peppermint syrup, and chocolate syrup.
Set that mixture aside for now, but don’t put it too far out of reach; you’ll need it again in just a few moments.
Step 3:
In a frothing pitcher or small cup, combine cocoa powder, peppermint extract, and whatever milk or coffee creamer your java-obsessed heart desires. We used almond milk, but feel free to use your old faithful.
Use the milk frother to mix all these ingredients until the cocoa powder dissolves and the milk or creamer is frothy and fluffy.
Step 4:
Now’s the time to bring back your cup of cold coffee. Pour the chocolatey froth over the joe, and voila! — a perfect peppermint mocha cold brew.
