It may be a difficult truth for a dedicated java lover to admit, but sometimes, the regular morning coffee routine can grow a bit stale.
You fill up your coffee cup with the same shot of espresso and steamy, hot milk (or cold milk, if you tend to go for iced beverages) every day, and while it gives you the kick in the pants you need to get your day going, it doesn’t do much to keep you from getting bored.
If you’ve found yourself uninspired by your usual drink, it may be time to try a new milk, flavor, and coffee combo.
Our iced ube latte recipe is an awesome way to do just that!
WHAT IS UBE?
Chances are, you won’t see the word “ube” written on the menu board at your favorite coffee shop. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if this recipe is the first you’ve heard of it.
But if your interest is piqued enough to give it a try, it’s probably a good idea to know exactly what you’ll be drinking.

Ube (pronounced ooh-beh) is basically a purple sweet potato that’s commonly enjoyed in the Philippines. They boast a pretty sweet taste, which is why they’re so commonly used in desserts like jams or puddings.
Within the past few years, however, the spud has risen in popularity across the globe, and an abundance of ube recipes have popped up.
From ice cream to donuts, the flavor of ube complements plenty of sweet treats well…plus, its purple hue (which is totally natural, by the way) just makes things more fun.
A dash of ube extract has the power to make any cup of coffee much more fun, and this iced ube latte recipe is just what you need to take your standard cold coffee to the next level.
MAKE AN UBE LATTE AT HOME
YOU’LL NEED:
- 2 teaspoons ube extract
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 shots of espresso
- 1 tablespoon sweetened condensed milk
- Ice cubes
THE PROCESS:
Step 1:
Begin by pouring a quarter of a cup of milk into a tall glass.
Our recipe uses whole milk, but feel free to use your favorite milk of choice — unsweetened coconut milk is a popular choice among fans of these vibrant drinks.
Step 2:
Stir in the ube extract and sweetened condensed milk, making sure both ingredients are fully blended into the milk.
Step 3:
Now, it’s time to fire up the old reliable espresso machine. For best brewing results, we recommend pulling out your favorite light, medium, or dark roast coffee beans and a burr coffee grinder to grind your joe right before you start the machine.
This isn’t a must, of course, but it does make a fresher-tasting brew than a package of pre-ground beans would.
Pull two shots of the rich, strong coffee, and pour them both into the milk mixture. Stir well, and you’re done!
DRINK UP
Sipping an ube latte is a great way to enjoy a sweet coffee drink without having to heap teaspoons of sugar into your glass.
Though you’d be hard-pressed to find the ingredient being used in your local coffee shop, you can purchase some ube yourself and use the purple yam to make your homemade coffees a bit more interesting.
Happy Caffeinating!
