There are plenty of reasons to love the classic cappuccino. It’s creamy and delicious, and with only three ingredients — espresso, milk, and foam — it’s not hard to learn to make one on your own.
Thanks to the simplicity of this drink, there are plenty of opportunities to give your cappuccino an upgrade and experiment with different flavors and add-ins, which is exactly why we’re introducing you to the mocha cappuccino.
WHAT MAKES A MOCHA?
While the mocha on the menu at your local cafe is likely referring to a latte with chocolate added, the term can apply to any coffee drink with chocolate, including the cappuccino. So, while the mocha cappuccino’s name makes it sound more complicated than it really is, this drink is simply made by combining cappuccino’s three basic components with chocolate syrup or powder (or in some cases, both!).
If you have an espresso maker with a built-in steaming wand at home and are willing to put time and energy into perfecting your microfoam, you can make a mocha cappuccino at home in just a few minutes. If you’re itching to sharpen your barista skills, fire up your brewer and gather a few ingredients; this recipe is for you.
MAKE A MOCHA CAPPUCCINO AT HOME
YOU’LL NEED:
- 1/4 cup of strong brewed coffee
- 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder
- 1/3 teaspoon of vanilla
- 1/2 cup of hot milk
- 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup
- A frother or steam wand
DIRECTIONS:
Step 1:
The first step is to fire up your at-home brewer. If you’re making regular coffee, you can use whatever brewing method you prefer — automatic drip machine, pour-over, French press, whatever you like. If you want something a little bit stronger, though, use your espresso machine to pull a shot of the dark roasted java.
Step 2:
Once your brew is in a mug, add chocolate syrup and cocoa powder, and stir until the wet ingredients are well-blended and the powder has dissolved.
Step 3:
Next, pour vanilla extract and hot milk into a frothing pitcher and steam (or froth) the liquid until it’s bubbly. We used two percent milk, but feel free to use your favorite non-dairy substitute if you’d like.
Step 4:
Pour the freshly frothed mixture over the coffee, then top the drink with milk foam and a sprinkle of cocoa powder, and you’re all done!
