Whether or not coffee belongs on the McDonald’s menu is a rather split issue. You may be one who finds themselves in the drive-thru ordering a McCafe beverage nearly every day, or you believe the golden-arched franchise should just stick to hamburgers and fries…there’s rarely an in-between.
Yet we, however, find ourselves right in the middle of the issue. Sure, a McDonald’s frappe often hits just the right spot, but those trips to the restaurant can begin to add up rather quickly. And that’s exactly why we’ve decided to share our own recipe for a caramel frappe.
Now, everyone wins — if you’re wary of fast-food coffee, you’ve found a way to avoid it, and if you find yourself spending four dollars on a caramel frappe beverage more frequently than you’d like to admit, you can easily save yourself a few bucks.
WHAT’S A FRAPPE, ANYWAY?
Now, before you whip out your blender and coffee, it’s important that you know exactly what you’re drinking.
First things first: a frappe is not a frappuccino. It’s easy to understand why you might think the two terms are interchangeable, as they do contain the same basic ingredients (usually coffee/espresso, milk or heavy cream, ice, and some sort of flavored syrup) but the difference lies in the logistics. A frappuccino is a blended coffee beverage made by Starbucks Coffee Company exclusively, as they’ve trademarked the term. A frappe, on the other hand, is any chilled drink served at a slushy consistency; it doesn’t have to include coffee, but in most cases, it does.
MAKE A CARAMEL FRAPPE AT HOME
YOU’LL NEED:
- 1 cup of chilled brewed coffee
- 1/2 cup of heavy cream
- 1-2 tablespoons of sugar (to taste)
- 2 cups of ice
- 3 tablespoons of caramel
- Whipped cream
- Blender
THE RECIPE:
Step 1:
Start the process by pouring heavy cream, caramel sauce, coffee, sugar, and ice cubes into a blender. Pulse the mixture until the frappe is somewhat thick but still pourable. As far as sugar is concerned, you can use as little or as much as you’d like. Our recipe calls for 1-2 tablespoons of the white granules, but feel free to use more or less depending on your taste.
Step 2:
Pour the caramel-coffee blend into a tall glass, and top the frappe off with a hearty dollop of whipped cream. Punctuate the latte with a drizzle of caramel syrup on top, and you’re all finished!
