Kalita 102 vs Kalita Wave

Which of Kalita’s brewers deserves a spot on your countertop?

The Kalita 102 and the Wave are pour-over drippers from the renowned Japanese coffee manufacturer. To cut to the chase — both are solid, and both make great coffee. However, both have features and quirks that might sway your decision towards one or the other.

I’ve used these models at home and in a cafe for many years, so I’m here to share my two cents. Read on for a pour-over brewer showdown!

Kalita 102 vs Kalita Wave

Key Takeaways

  • The Kalita 102 is an entry-level, wedge-shaped pour-over dripper that’s affordable and user-friendly, using readily available #2 filters, ideal for beginners.
  • The Kalita Wave 185 boasts superior build quality and finishes, as well as consistent brews with its flat-bottom design, but comes with a higher cost and harder-to-find proprietary filters.
  • Both models can brew 2-4 cups, and while they offer different aesthetic and practical experiences, each ensures a quality pour-over coffee with similar results in the cup

Demystifying Pour-Over Drippers

What, you’ve never done a pour-over in your life? Well, it just happens to be a fantastic way to make a tasty cup of brewed coffee. This technique involves carefully pouring hot water over coffee grounds placed in a filter nestled inside the brewer.

This manual process allows you to tailor your brew precisely to your preferences, from the temperature of the hot water to the way you pour it. Things can certainly get complicated, but we’ve got you covered with our full guide here. Or you can stick to a simple recipe!

However you want to approach it, the core of this brew method is the venerable pour-over dripper. These come in many shapes, sizes, and finishes. They also brew quite differently, depending on the construction of the brew path. Here are a few types:

Wedge-Shaped

As the name suggests, this type of pour-over dripper looks like a wedge with the edge cut off. It looks a bit like the brew basket of an auto-drip coffeemaker and may even use compatible filters.

These are usually finished with small drain holes (anywhere from one to three) located centrally along the brewer’s narrow inside base. The Kalita 102 is a great example of a wedge-shaped dripper.

Kalita 102 Multiple

Flat-Bottom

Flat-bottom drippers are similar in concept to wedge-shaped ones and resemble a cone with the pointy tip cut off. ‘Flats’ also use small drain holes like the 102, but the more symmetrical shape helps promote even and consistent brews.

One issue with this shape is that the paper filters are a bit specialized and may be harder to find. The Kalita Wave is an example of a flat-bottom dripper.

Kalita Wave December

Conical

Conical types swap out those tiny drain holes for a larger singular opening. Brewers like these are more efficient at brewing due to the faster drain time, but you might need a special goose-neck kettle to slow down the water flow.

Conical brewers use filters similar to wedge-shaped ones, except with the pointy tip intact. One of the most popular brewers using this construction style is the Hario V60.

Hario V60 Top

Kalita 102 Coffee Dripper

If you’re just getting your feet wet with pour-over brewing, few drippers are as straightforward as the Kalita 102. This Kalita is a great pick for the budding barista who wants to add some pizzazz to their coffee-making routine.

The model number means we’re looking at the 2-cup model, which can brew 2 to 4 small Japanese-sized cups of coffee. There are the smaller 101 and the larger 103 and 104 models, but I’d say the 102 is the “Goldilocks zone” of the lot. Kalita seems to think so too — it’s the size that’s available in the widest variety of materials and colors.

The brewer’s wedge-shaped design features tiny raised ridges on the inner walls that give the paper filter a bit of lift during the brew. And speaking of those, this dripper uses the standard #2 paper filter, like you’d use for small auto-drip machines.

Kalita 102 Top

Things We Like

  • Inexpensive and well-made, from a reputable manufacturer
  • Available in multiple colors, material finishes, and sizes
  • Filters are affordable and easy-to-find

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Your pouring game has to be on point
  • The ceramic model is quite heavy — watch those cups!
  • How the handle of the (expensive) copper variant gets uncomfortably hot when brewing

Kalita Wave 185 Coffee Dripper

The Wave costs about two to three times more than the Kalita 102, depending on the model. And what do we get for the price premium?

For starters: a flat-bottom affair that mimics the brewing characteristics of an ideal “flat bed” extraction. The dripper’s shape and filter work together to promote evenness and consistency throughout the brewing process. Now who doesn’t like a great cuppa with minimal fuss?

The Wave also features improvements in build quality across all models. Insulated wood-tone handles, removable bases for the glass models, and at least three Special Edition material finishes mean something good-looking and functional on your brew bar.

But with unique attributes comes a small price to pay: the filters. Kalita sells proprietary Wave filters that are a bit hard to find in regular stores. Amazon has some off-brand options, but they just don’t work as well as the Kalitas.

Kalita Wave Top

Things We Like

  • Even and consistent brews thanks to the flat bottom construction

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Confusing model selection
  • Filters are pricier and harder to find
  • Lack of an inexpensive plastic variant

Similarities Between The Kalita 102 And Wave

Brew Volume

The Kalita 102 and Wave 185 are both 2-4 cup brewers. Expect to make about 16 ounces of brewed coffee in one go. This is perfect for two normal-sized cups, or perhaps a large insulated tumbler.

Brewing Process

The Kalita Wave 185’s flat bottom should ideally give you an advantage in consistent brews. But in practice, I find that both brewers make very similar cups of coffee.

Both the 102 and the Wave have three small-sized drain holes, the latter being a smidge tinier. However, the design of the proprietary Wave filters increases water flow, leading to near-equal brew times between the two brewers.

So despite the difference in shape and filter, you can expect to use your Wave brew recipes for the 102, and vice-versa. Just remember that your grinder’s setting between drippers can vary!

Differences Between the Kalita 102 and Wave

Filter Flexibility

While Kalita does distribute their filter paper for the 102, just about any #2-size paper filter should work. Suitable brands you might find in your nearby Walmart or Costco are Great Value, Melitta, and Brew Rite. In a pinch, you can also use a larger filter size (like a #4) without much detriment to your brew.

The same isn’t true for the Kalita Wave 185. While you can creatively fold any filter to “fit”, you need the brand’s proprietary Wave filters, or at least a good third-party alternative to take advantage of its special brewing dynamics. The smaller 155 model also uses more narrow filters that don’t fit its bigger sibling.

Kalita 102 185 Filters

Size Alternatives

If two cups equal too much caffeine, you can opt for the Kalita 185’s smaller 155 sibling. That’s about it.

On the other hand, the Kalita 102 has one smaller size variant (the 101), and two larger size variants (103 and 104), allowing you to do an XL-sized pour-over if you wanted! The biggest size tops up at 12 cups of coffee or about 50 ounces.

In a sensible move, the two largest sizes only come in lightweight polycarbonate plastic.

Consistency Across Variants

If you’ve seen a Kalita 102, you’ve seen them all. The Kalita Wave, on the other hand, has small differences in construction depending on the material variant. Here are a few ones I noticed on the different Waves I’ve used:

  • The stainless steel model has a narrow grip insulated in plastic
  • The Tsubame models use a bent wire grip as a heat-proof holder
  • The Tsubame models have a slightly different base shape, which makes them drain a bit faster than the standard steel variant
  • The bottom ridges on the porcelain and glass variant are more pronounced than those of the stainless steel model
  • The glass model has a removable plastic base

Which One Should You Get?

Before you splurge for either of these, take a peep at our comprehensive brewer guide to see if the pour-over lifestyle is for you.

For entry-level seekers, it’s hard to make a case against the Kalita 102. It’s affordable, looks classy, and the filters are incredibly easy to find. The plastic version especially is a lot of brewer for very little money.

If you’re up for something unique and a bit more premium (filter fuss included), the Kalita Wave 185 will surely jazz up the joint thanks to its wider range of finishes and special models. The cherry on top? Consistent brews cup after cup.

Key Takeaways

  • The Baratza Encore is celebrated for its 40 individual grind settings, offering a versatile range for various brewing methods, from espresso to French press.
  • Designed with the home barista in mind, the Encore is user-friendly and compact, featuring durable steel burrs for consistent grinding and a thermal overload cutout to prevent overheating.
  • While the Encore excels in many areas, it lacks advanced features some home baristas desire, is not ideal for Turkish coffee or non-pressurized portafilter espresso machines, and is considered somewhat slow.

Check out the video below or keep reading to find out what he loves about it, and what he thinks can be improved.

The Baratza Encore Design

baratza encore design

Because Seattle is known for its coffee enthusiasts, it’s only fitting that Baratza would enlist the talents of the city’s experts to design the Encore. And naturally, the company considered the home coffee brewer’s needs during the development of the Encore.

The Baratza Encore is a conical, high-carbon steel burr grinder ideal for home use. Because the machine’s primary purpose is to produce consistent grinds for many java drinkers, the Encore has a whopping 40 grind settings. We appreciate the variety and think you will, too, but that’s not all we like about this machine.

Things We Like

  • The Encore isn’t a blade grinder. Instead, unlike many other machines, it has burrs that can provide a more consistent grind size on a wide range of settings.
  • Since the Encore is easy to set up and using it doesn’t require any special skills, it makes a decent entry-level burr grinder.
  • The Encore doesn’t take up much space on your kitchen counter.
  • You can choose one of two bean hopper capacities: 8 or 17 ounces.
  • The Baratza Encore is easy to clean and comes with a cleaning brush!
  • The motor allows for longer grinder times than some other machines. Plus, there’s a thermal overload cut-off to prevent overheating.

Room for Improvement

  • It’s not the most affordable grinder, which is somewhat disappointing because it has relatively simple features compared to other products.
  • It’s not the best grinder for espresso, which won’t be a problem if your brewer has a pressurized portafilter, as those are pretty forgiving. However, if your machine doesn’t have one, we recommend not choosing the Encore as your dedicated espresso grinder.
  • It doesn’t have the extra features — like a screen, digital timer, or dose controlling tools — dedicated home baristas want.
  • It’s a rather slow grinder.

What Stands Out About the Baratza Encore

Plenty of features make the Baratza Encore stand out, including:

Stainless Steel Burrs

The Baratza Encore is a burr coffee grinder; in our opinion, it makes a better cup of joe than a blade grinder. Why? Because burr grinders use two revolving, abrasive surfaces to grind coffee beans. Blade grinders just cut them to pieces.

Ultimately, burr grinders provide superb grind consistency (a.k.a., uniform-sized coffee particles), which keep your drip coffee makers and espresso machines from getting clogged as they brew your cup.

Additionally, burr-ground beans help you make the most of your coffee flavor. If they produce too much heat, coffee grinders can strip the beans of their flavor-filled oils and lower the quality of their taste. However, burr grinders create less friction than blade coffee grinders, so they don’t heat the grounds as much.

Baratza uses high-carbon steel burrs, which are more susceptible to oxidation and rust than the ceramic that other companies often use. But don’t worry; the oil on your coffee beans will help prevent the burrs from rusting.

baratza encore conical burrs

The Baratza Encore has conical steel burrs, not flat ones, which means they are quieter than the flat burrs you’d find on a more expensive commercial grinder. Besides, flat burrs create more heat from friction, reducing your brew’s taste quality.

40 Grind Settings

Since you’re a serious coffee lover, we’re willing to bet you have plenty of coffee-making tools at your disposal. And if you do, you likely know that some coffee grind sizes are only appropriate for certain brewers.

For example, you need extra-coarse coffee for cold brew, a coarse grind for your percolator and French press, medium-sized grounds for your automatic drip machine, medium-fine coffee grounds for your Moka pot, and a fine grind for your espresso machine.

baratza encore fine and medium grind coffee grounds

Fortunately, the Baratza Encore boasts 40 individual grind options between 250 and 1,200 microns. With such a wide range of grind settings, you won’t have any problems making sure your coffee grounds are the right size for almost any brewing method you use in the morning.

Pro-tip:

If you’re unsure which Encore grind setting to use, check out our detailed coffee grind size chart here

Coffee Grounds Bin and Bean Hopper Capacity

baratza encore hopper

The Baratza Encore’s hopper can hold up to 17 ounces of whole coffee beans and keep them fresh until you’re ready to grind them. If you don’t need to store that much joe, use the eight-ounce hopper and save the nine-ounce hopper extension (which comes at no extra cost) for when you’ll be grinding and brewing for a crowd.

The grounds bin isn’t big; it only holds five ounces of ground coffee. This might be a bummer for some, but the logic here is that you’ll have fresher coffee each time by leaving fewer grounds in the bin.

Portaholder

Baratza designed the Encore’s Portaholder with the espresso enthusiast in mind. The Portaholder gives you a convenient place to store your espresso machine’s portafilter during the grinding process.

Ease of Setup and Usage

As any entry-level grinder should be, the Baratza Encore is easy to set up and use. Sure, you’ll initially need to attach a few pieces and possibly make a few adjustments, but with the instruction manual in hand and our handy review video playing, you’ll have your grinder figured out in minutes.

baratza encore pulse button

Once you set up the coffee grinder, add your beans, select a grind setting, and power the machine on. For a long grind session, you can use the pulse button on the front (the coffee grinder will only run while you hold the button) or the on/off knob.

Build

baratza encore build

Fewer things are more annoying than a coffee grinder that only works for a few seconds before starting to smell hot. Fortunately, that’s not a factor with the Encore. It has a high-torque DC motor that creates less heat and allows for longer grinding cycles than other motors. And should you overuse your grinder, the Encore has an automatically resetting thermal overload cutout that keeps the motor from overheating.

The Baratza Encore has speed controls that keep the burr rotation at 550 RPM. This slow speed helps beans feed smoothly through the burrs, reduces heat, and produces a quieter grind.

Easy and Quick Cleaning

Some coffee grinders are a pain to clean — maybe that’s why so many are hesitant about buying one. You won’t run into that difficulty with the Encore. After you unplug the machine and turn the grind size dial to the coarsest setting, you can easily remove the hopper and rubber seal to get to the burrs and give them a good wipedown.

Be sure to clean this electric grinder thoroughly; you don’t want to leave any coffee particles stuck anywhere. Also, remember that water humidity can cause the burrs to rust, so please, never use soap and water on them. Instead, use the included cleaning brush or a soft cloth to remove excess coffee grounds.

Alternative Grinder Options

If this entry-level coffee grinder doesn’t seem to meet your needs, perhaps you’ll consider trusting one of these alternatives to grind your favorite beans.

Get a more advanced model.

If you don’t think the Encore is powerful enough to get the job done, check out the Baratza Virtuoso+. This machine is like an upgraded version of the company’s Encore in terms of price and features. Check out this comparison of the two conical burr grinders.

However, if you don’t feel like reading, note that the Virtuoso has more advanced features, like a digital timer, sturdier build, burrs that don’t lose calibration, and the ability to grind faster.

Go with a manual option.

More devoted coffee drinkers may be interested in manual grinders, especially since the original burr grinders were manual. If you’re that kind of java purist, consider the JavaPresse manual grinder; it’s an overall excellent choice.

This tool is quieter than an electric coffee grinder, dispenses just how much you want to grind, and cuts beans fine enough for Turkish coffee. The grinder’s brushed stainless steel also lasts five times as long as regular stainless steel.

FAQs

Is the Baratza Encore loud?

A common complaint among Baratza Encore users is that, though lauded for being quiet, the machine is still somewhat noisy. However, noise isn’t particularly unusual for an electric burr grinder, so you shouldn’t be concerned that you can hear your Encore working. Besides, the Encore isn’t as loud as some other grinders on the market.

How long will a Baratza Encore last?

Provided you clean your Encore regularly (about once a month) and replace its burrs when they get dull, you can expect your machine to last between seven and ten years.

How big is the Baratza Encore?

The Baratza Encore is a fairly compact, lightweight grinder, weighing only seven pounds and boasting dimensions of 4.7 by 6.3 by 13.8 inches (width by depth by height).

Is the Baratza Encore good for espresso?

Yes. Espresso grind, much like the grind settings needed for pour over, french press, and others is all about getting consistency. The Encore is excellent at delivering a consistent grind, including when you need it fine enough for a shot of espresso.

Wrap Up

We’re impressed with Baratza’s dedication to quality products in our “just throw it away” society, and that commitment shows through the Encore. It essentially has the same internal parts — burrs, motor, etc. — as one of the company’s more advanced grinders; it just lacks the extra bells and whistles some other models have.

So, if you want something that gets the job done just as well as the fancy grinders but sits in a more reasonable price range, the Encore could be what you need.

However, none of the Encore’s grind settings cut your beans to the perfect size for a Turkish coffee maker, so if that tends to be your drink of choice, this is a less-than-exceptional grinder choice for you. Most coffee and espresso enthusiasts will be happy with it, and as long as you make time for proper maintenance and regular cleaning, this automatic grinder will last for years.

Starbucks Can Drinks

Without much delay, let’s get into all of the Starbucks drinks that you can purchase in cans for an easier drinking experience and one less stop in your daily routine.

Coffee Doubleshot Energy

Starting off strong, literally, let’s look at the Doubleshot Energy canned drinks. Specifically, the Coffee Doubleshot Energy, which is the most simple of the Doubleshot Energy options. It consists of only coffee and skim milk, creating a creamy and rich flavor.

It also features ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins to produce a healthy focus effect. Full of natural energy and a simple taste, you can’t go wrong with this pick.

Mocha Doubleshot Energy

If you want a bit more flavor added to this energizing drink, Starbucks also has plenty of options that do just that. The Mocha Doubleshot Energy has all of the great things the regular Doubleshot Energy does, with a decadent chocolate flavor added in.

Considering mocha is one of the most popular flavors at the actual Starbucks coffee shop, we aren’t surprised it made its way into a canned form, as well. It’s like caffeinated chocolate milk!

Caramel Doubleshot Energy

You may not be much of a chocolate fan, and that’s okay because if you still have a sweet tooth, there’s also the Caramel Doubleshot Energy. This is one of the newer flavor options available in the Doubleshot Energy collection.

Alongside the coffee and skim milk, you also get a sweet and rich caramel taste that’s the perfect start to any morning. Plus, there’s still the inclusion of the natural ingredients of ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins.

Vanilla Doubleshot Energy

Looking towards a more simple and classic flavor, the Vanilla Doubleshot Energy is a perfectly sweet version of the Doubleshot Energy. The addition of vanilla doesn’t take away from the richness of the drink, instead, it complements it.

So, if you’re someone who is happy with a vanilla latte, you’ll love having these stocked up in your fridge for easy grabbing.

White Chocolate Doubleshot Energy

The last of the Doubleshot Energy options is the White Chocolate Doubleshot Energy. Another decadent pick, this has a lighter and more sweet chocolatey flavor than the mocha.

Apart from the dessert-like taste, you also get the enhanced focus benefits from the ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins. Not to mention, all of the Starbucks Doubleshot Energy cans contain more than 75 milligrams of caffeine.

Caffè Mocha Tripleshot Energy

If you thought the Doubleshot Energy was enough, you’re in for a surprise. The Caffè Mocha Tripleshot Energy is just one of the flavored coffee cans that contain 225 milligrams of caffeine.

This chocolate drink has just a touch of flavor, a touch of cream, and a whole lot of energy. Plus, the Tripleshot Energy beverages also have ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins just like the previously mentioned canned drinks.

French Vanilla Tripleshot Energy

Next up is the French Vanilla Tripleshot Energy, which is not only different from the Vanilla Doublshot Energy in its caffeine content but also in its vanilla flavor. While there may just be a touch of it alongside the cream, the French vanilla flavor creates a more rich and complex taste.

This, paired with the strong coffee, makes for an intense, energizing, and creamy sip that’s perfect to get your busy day started and keeps you going.

Caramel Tripleshot Energy

Just like the Doubleshot Energy, there’s also a Caramel Tripleshot Energy for a more rich and more syrupy sweet flavor. Though, there still isn’t a large amount of sweetness or creaminess when combined with all of the coffee present.

Regardless, this is a delicious choice for when you need a quick boost of extra energy sans the long lines at the coffee shop.

Milk Chocolate Zero Sugar Tripleshot Energy

The last of the Tripleshot Energy options is actually one that also features absolutely no sugar. So, if you’re looking for a bit of a healthier pick, the Milk Chocolate Zero Sugar Tripleshot Energy is for you.

A single can only contains 90 calories, which is a lot less than the other Tripleshot Energy drinks. There’s still a bold and chocolatey flavor present with all of the focus-enhancing ingredients of ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins.

Espresso Salted Caramel Cream

Moving onto some smaller cans, the Espresso Salted Caramel Cream provides an even faster shot of energy. Made with brewed Starbucks espresso that’s rich and bold, and just a small amount of salted caramel flavor and cream, this is an easy-to-drink caffeine boost.

The espresso cans are 6.5 ounces compared to the Doubleshot Energy and Tripleshot Energy cans, which are 15 ounces. However, there’s still a good amount of caffeine present: a total of 120 milligrams.

Espresso and Cream

If you’re not particularly a fan of salted caramel, there is another smaller option that also contains 120 milligrams of caffeine. The Espresso and Cream is a simpler take on the previous canned beverage.

This one is made with only the brewed Starbucks espresso and just a touch of cream, enough to give it a delicious flavor while keeping the strong taste. Some have even said this one is better than the salted caramel version!

Black Nitro Cold Brew

Moving onto a slightly bigger canned drink, the Black Nitro Cold Brew is a 9.6-ounce beverage that’s made with a dark roast and is unsweetened. However, as is the Nitro Cold Brew at Starbucks coffee shops, this is a creamy sip with a naturally sweet taste.

When it comes to the cans, nitrogen is infused into the drink the moment you open it. Instructions recommend tilting it once before pouring it right into a cold glass for the best results.

Splash of Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

While the option above is delicious on its own, maybe you want just a touch more creaminess. That’s where the Splash of Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew comes in. This is a slightly sweeter and creamier nitro cold brew than the above drink.

It’s almost exactly like if you order a nitro cold brew with sweet cream at your local Starbucks, just in a more convenient package!

Dark Cocoa Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

Chocolate fans, worry not, because there’s also one of these specialty nitro cold brew cans for you, as well. The Dark Cocoa Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew is a decadently flavored creamy canned coffee that hits all the right spots.

Once opened, the nitrogen is infused into a slightly sweetened sweet cream cold brew that’s got just a touch of dark cocoa flavor. Not too much and not too little, you’ll be excited to start your mornings with this pick.

Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

Of course, a Starbucks menu classic had to be replicated into these unique nitro cold brew cans. The Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew is a fan favorite and one that you can get canned for convenience.

This drink is made with natural vanilla and fig flavors to complement the complexity of the dark roast cold brew. It’s smooth, creamy, and just slightly sweet for a satisfying sip.

Pumpkin Cream Nitro Cold Brew

This next one is the last of the nitro cold brew selections but is actually one that’s only sold in certain stores around the fall season. The Pumpkin Cream Nitro Cold Brew is reminiscent of the infamous pumpkin-flavored drinks that you can find on the autumn Starbucks menu.

While it is a specialty drink that you may not be able to find everywhere, it’s definitely worth it if you do. The spiced creamy flavor complements the nitrogen-infused cold brew really well.

White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino Mini

You might be familiar with the rather popular Frappuccino bottled coffee drinks from Starbucks and, if you like those, you’ll be happy to know that they’re also available in a miniature version. The White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino Mini is just one of the 6.5-ounce Frappuccino Mini flavors.

This is much sweeter and creamier than the previous canned drink options. It’s got a decadent and rich white chocolate flavor and tastes more like a treat.

Caramel Frappuccino Mini

The other option available in this unique canned beverage is the Caramel Frappuccino Mini. A sweeter and more rich dessert-like drink in a small and energizing form.

It’s enough to satisfy your sweet tooth and give you that caffeine boost quickly and easily. The bottled version of the Caramel Frappuccino is already super popular, so it’s convenient that it’s also available in a miniature can.

Strawberry Lemonade Starbucks Refresher

Moving on from coffee, let’s look at some more refreshing options. The canned Starbucks Refreshers are a little bit different from the Refershers you’ll find at the coffee shop. These are sparkling juice blends made with coconut water, real fruit juice, B vitamins, and caffeine from green coffee extract.

The Strawberry Lemonade Starbucks Refresher has flavors of sweet strawberry and tangy lemon, which complement the coconut water rather well. Overall it’s light, bubbly, and a very satisfying sip.

Peach Passionfruit Starbucks Refreshers

Another of these 12-ounce canned drinks available is the Peach Passionfruit Starbucks Refresher. The coconut water in this option is smoothed out by the rich sweet peach and tart passionfruit flavors.

The caffeine from the green coffee extract that’s present in these beverages is around the same amount that’s in an iced tea.

Black Cherry Limeade Starbucks Refreshers

The last of these Refreshers, as well as the last on our list overall, is the Black Cherry Limeade Starbucks Refresher. This one may have the brightest taste in terms of sparkling juice blends.

Featuring a crisp black cherry flavor with just a hint of zesty lime, this drink gives the coconut water a cool and sharp taste that works well alongside the real fruit juice.

Wrapping Up

Now that you have a rather extensive list of canned drink options made by Starbucks, both for coffee and refreshments, hopefully, you’ve found some that have piqued your interest. Having a ready-to-go drink available in your fridge for busy mornings or unpredictable afternoons certainly makes life a little bit easier.

You may not have time to stop at your favorite coffee shop, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without an energizing sip to get you through your day. Whether it’s a super strong Tripleshot Energy, a flavor-inducing Nitro Cold Brew, or a fizzy Refresher, there really is something for everyone.

Happy Caffeinating!

Timemore Black Mirror Scale Review

Let me tell you a secret: I’ve been a barista for many years, and the biggest boost to my brewing confidence happened when I traded in my kitchen scale for a dedicated coffee scale.

Back then, I didn’t care about newfangled features like Bluetooth or flow rate tracking. What truly mattered to me was a scale with a responsive display, a built-in timer, and the capability to detect even the slightest weight changes of a single coffee bean.

And if I were to do it again, I would probably go for the Timemore Black Mirror Scale.

Timemore Black Mirror Scale Review

Key Takeaways

  • The Timemore Black Mirror Scale earns praise for its straightforward functionality and reliable performance, focused on providing precise measurements with a minimalist design.
  • It’s designed primarily for manual brewing vmethods like pour-over and French press and has an auto-timer mode for this purpose.
  • While the scale is well-regarded for its robust build and easy-to-use interface, it has its limitations, such as the lack of ounce measurements and potential additional costs for calibration weights.

Things To Consider Before Buying The Timemore Black Mirror Scale

Timemore Black Mirror Scale scaled

You all know how the saying goes: Different strokes for different folks. And this scale is, well, no different. Do note that our considerations apply to the ‘Basic Plus’ version of the scale, and may not be true for the ‘2.0’ and ‘Pro’ models. Check these out before you buy!

Will You Need Ounce Measurements?

Kitchen and food scales frequently have multiple units of measure you can cycle through. Some coffee scales are a bit of a different breed because most brew recipes out there assume that you will be using grams and grams alone.

While some coffee scales still offer the ability to switch from grams to ounces, the Timemore Black Mirror Scale isn’t one of them.

Do You Make Espresso?

Some scales are made with manual brewing methods in mind, while some excel for espresso-making. There are a few that straddle the line, like the Black Mirror.

This scale’s form factor makes it best for brewing pour-overs and French press coffee. It’s small enough to sit on the drip tray of some commercial espresso machines, but may not be the best fit for home models. Also, flipping the silicone mat gives you a usable platform for weighing coffee grinds on your portafilter.

Are Smart Features Important?

Some high-end coffee scales have features like flow rate tracking, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi syncing, and apps that can mirror your scale’s display on your phone. Others will have a few hands-free features, such as auto-taring and auto-timer modes.

Think of the Timemore Black Mirror scale as a straightforward model that just happens to have a single auto-timer mode as a bonus.

A Quick Look At the Timemore Black Mirror Scale

The Black Mirror Basic Plus is a compact brewing scale that features the same, sleek “blacked out” aesthetic of other Timemore products. Despite the name, you can also get a white version if you’re willing to pay a bit more.

Timemore Product Family
The Black Mirror, Black Mirror Nano, and the Fish Kettle. The names are certainly a choice, but I’m a fan of the brand’s cohesive design identity.

The scale rocks a back-lit display that shows the brew timer and the weight readout in grams. It’s a very clear and legible display, with the bright white LED indicators providing sharp contrast against the stealthy matte textured plastic surface of the unit.

Now on to controls. The display is flanked by two touch-sensitive buttons. The left one controls the timer and the one on the right zeroes out or tares the scale.

Over to the right side, you’ll find a third switch: this time, a physical one for turning the scale on or off. This thoughtful addition allows you to quickly reset the scale with a swift toggle and turn it off completely to save power.

Black Mirror Side Profile
Hurray for creature comforts — a physical on-off switch AND USB Type C charging.

Speaking of power, this scale comes with a built-in Lithium-ion battery that charges with the included USB Type C cable, though you’ll have to provide your own USB-A plug. And rounding out the package is an anti-slip heat-resistant silicone mat, that I recommend you keep on your scale at all times.

Black Mirror Unboxed
An attractive, if a bit spartan, package. We’d have loved to see a calibration weight included.

Features and Benefits

The photos don’t do this sleek scale justice, so before we talk more about the scale in detail, here’s a video of the Black Mirror in action!

Solid Build Quality

Yes, it’s made of plastic. But don’t let the material fool you — Timemore uses a hard-wearing matte-finish acrylic that does a great job of preventing (or hiding) scuffs and fingerprints. The bottom has four chunky rubber feet that keep this hefty unit from sliding all over your countertop.

The top shell is constructed as a single piece protecting the electronics inside. While it’s not rated as waterproof, this gives me some confidence that it’ll survive the occasional spill.

Precise and Responsive Weighing

The scale measures up to 2000 grams and is accurate to a tenth of a gram (0.1g). The minimum trigger weight, or the minimum weight that will trigger the display, is 0.5 grams. Not bad!

All these numbers don’t matter if your scale is laggy, and thankfully the Black Mirror isn’t one of those. The display updates the weight reading quite fast. You can put the scale’s 0.1g resolution through its paces and stop precisely where you want to.

It’s not THE quickest scale we’ve tried (that honor goes to the Acaia Pearl and Lunar), but it’s more than good enough for both commercial and competitive use. Which means it’s just near-perfect for the home brewer.

Café-Friendly Features

I visit a lot of specialty coffee bars. While the fancier ones are kitted out with pricey Acaias, I see quite a few Black Mirrors out there as well. And here’s why I think that is:

  • Battery life is great. It’s rated at 10 hours, but in practical use, you can go days (or even weeks) without charging.
  • The physical on-off switch can act as a reset button that will quickly reboot the scale, should the display be unresponsive due to an unstable surface
  • There’s an auto-off feature with a generous fifteen minutes before shutting off, as long as no weight changes are detected within that period
  • Audible beeps indicate successful button presses and mode changes, and the scale can be muted by holding down the timer button for five seconds
  • An auto-timer mode that works great for pour-overs and other manual brewing methods (accessed by quickly hitting the timer button five times)

Additional Notes and Points for Improvement

I really like this scale. It’s not the most feature-rich, and I’ve actually had one die on me (more on that later). But it’s got great ergonomics and is easy to use with confidence. That said, here are some more observations and minor niggles that I haven’t covered above:

  • The weight readout is affected when you press down anywhere on the scale, which unfortunately includes the timer button. However, it does bounce back to the original reading sans finger.
  • No way to switch units means you’re stuck with grams. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, because most serious brew recipes use the metric system, but an ounce readout would’ve been nice.
  • Do not use a quick charge cable and plug for the scale! I certainly learned this one too late. It MAY work at first, but it will damage your battery or the scale itself over time. Stick to USB Type A plugs rated at 5V/1A or 2A at the most.
  • The scale needs a set of weights to recalibrate, none of which are included in the package. A quick peek at Amazon shows that the weights required cost almost as much as the scale itself!

These are all I’ve encountered, but I’ve heard of users with other issues that are related to quality control. As always, check your warranty options, and test your scale thoroughly so you can have it replaced in case of a faulty unit.

Specifications List

Here’s a full list of specifications from the manual. One thing worth noting is the larger operating temperature range when the silicone pad is used. In my experience, keeping it on is a must to prevent the scale readout from ‘drifting’ when the server or mug gets too hot.

SpecificationDetails

Measuring Range0.5g to 2000g

Alternatives and Wrap-Up

The Timemore Black Mirror is a no-frills model that excels at the basic functions expected of a coffee scale. It has great ergonomics, and for fans of sleek and minimalist aesthetics, it’s quite the looker too.

That said, it’s not the best scale for espresso especially if you’re using a home machine. If you like the Black Mirror’s style, you might want to spring for its more compact cousin, the Timemore Black Mirror Nano.

For a scale with all the latest tech, look no further than the Acaia Pearl. This top-of-the-line model is the most responsive we’ve ever used. It has loads of smart features, many of which can be accessed via apps on your smartphone.

But if you don’t care for high-end fanciness, and all you want for your manual brewing is something dependable and fast, it’s hard to recommend a better midrange model than the Black Mirror Basic Plus. It’s a Honda Civic in coffee scale form — it will confidently get the job done and will look good doing it. 4.4/5.

Happy Caffeinating!

Stumptown Coffee Review

One of the most important things to Stumptown Coffee, aside from providing exceptionally delicious coffee beans to customers, is their direct relationships with the coffee producers who are the base of the entire process.

If you haven’t heard of Stumptown Coffee roasters or you’re looking for a bit more information on them, let’s take a look into the company and just a few of the bean selections they have to offer.

Stumptown Coffee Review

What is Stumptown Coffee

The roasting company of Stumptown Coffee was founded by Duane Sorenson, who has made it the mission of the business to know where their coffee comes from. This includes the coffee farms, the people that produce it, and the regions it’s grown.

Over the years, many Direct Trade relationships with coffee partners have made Stumptown what it is: a coffee roasting business that cares about every step their beans go through. In fact, their coffee team spends nearly half of the year in the producing countries from which they source their beans. Through that time, they meet directly with their producer partners directly at the farms, mills, and cupping labs.

Stumptown Coffee Review

I was lucky enough to receive three different bags of coffee beans from Stumptown Coffee to try out for myself. These included one blend and two single-origins, all of which were delicious in their own way.

Stumptown Coffee

Holler Mountain

The first bag I tried was the Holler Mountain, which is an organic blend from East Africa, Central America, and South America that’s a signature for Stumptown Coffee. These beans are produced using a strict, organic-certified supply chain. It’s described as being full-bodied and complex with tasting notes of bright citrus, berry jam, and creamy caramel.

Holler Mountain

While this specific bag of beans is said to be perfect for a variety of brewing methods, I settled with a simple French Press brew, which worked out great. The aroma of the coffee was sweet and decadent. I could really tell that there was a beautiful blend between nutty caramel and delicate citrus notes.

Upon tasting the finished product, I found that it was very delicious and easy to drink. The rich and decadent flavors of the creamy caramel and hazelnut come together to create a smooth body that has just a touch of sweet citrus acidity in the finish.

Our rating:

Indulge in the exquisite Ethiopia Mordecofe. Immerse yourself in a complex and floral cup, adorned with the sparkling essence of nectarine, melon, and jasmine.

Next up was the Ethiopia Mordecofe single-origin coffee. This has been a lasting offering at Stumptown Coffee since 2006 and for good reason. The Mordecofe farms, which are short for “Mora Mora River Valley Development Coffee,” are owned by Haile Gebre in the Guji highlands.

Ethiopia Mordecofe

This exceptional bag of beans is described as offering a complex and floral cup that’s sparkling with tasting notes of nectarine, melon, and jasmine. With single-origin picks, I usually prefer to brew them using a pour-over method.

Having done this with Mordecofe, I found that the aroma was very interesting with light and sweet notes shining through. The taste was light, floral, and sweet as well, with a slight acidity to complement the sweetness.

Delight in a sweet symphony of flavors, combining the zesty notes of orange sherbet with the velvety richness of buttery chocolate.

Check Price

The last bag I got from Stumptown Coffee was the Guatemala El Injerto Bourbon, which is another single-origin selection. This coffee comes from the Aguirre family of Finca El Injerto, which Stumptown has been partnering with since 2003.

Guatemala El Injerto Bourbon

The El Injerto Bourbon is consistently complex and delicious thanks to the father and son duo of Arturo Aguirre Sr. and Arturo Aguirre Jr., who produce and process some of the highest-quality Guatemalan coffee while ensuring the preservation of the natural environment.

This coffee is described as having a sweet combination of tasting notes that include orange sherbert and buttery chocolate. Upon brewing with a pour-over method, I noticed that the aroma was rich and dark with a subtle citrus sweetness coming through. Meanwhile, its taste was dark and bitter with just a slight citrus acidity to match, leaving a smooth body and mouthfeel.

How Does Stumptown Coffee Roast Their Beans

Now that we’ve looked over some of their coffee selections, you might be curious as to how Stumptown Coffee roasts its beans. Since the company believes that the roasting process should be transparent, they make sure to honor the way the beans were produced by roasting in a way that showcases the distinctive qualities of each coffee.

Instead of attempting to make each product their own, they try to highlight what makes the variety or farm from which the beans come from unique. Aside from this and actively keeping their team knowledgeable about where their coffee comes from and how it’s produced, Stumptown also makes sure to fairly pay those who produce it.

Since they purchase coffee that’s handpicked at ideal ripeness and processed with careful detail, they pay producers much more than what they would get on the commodity market. This is done with the help of buying their coffee directly from the producers. With this process, there’s not only fair pay but also complete transparency when it comes to the coffee.

How Much Does Stumptown Coffee Cost

With each bean being different, Stumptown Coffee’s pricing varies. But, with the goal to more than fairly pay their producers, the effort that goes into each bean is shown in its price. So, just for a few examples, the Holler Mountain blend that I received is about $17.00 a bag.

However, the single-origins, are going to be a little more pricier since they’re specialty beans. The Ethiopia Mordecofe is $23.00 a bag and the Guatemala El Injerto Bourbon is $25.00 a bag. Of course, these prices further vary on shipping, though if you choose to subscribe to Stumptown Coffee, you get free shipping.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Stumptown Coffee is a great choice for not only delicious coffee that has a lot of care put into it from seed to production to roasting but also for supporting those coffee farmers and producers who are there from the start.

With the evidence shown in the careful roasting to keep the integrity of the beans’ flavors and the direct relationships between the Stumptown Coffee team and the producers in other countries which ensures more than fair pay, you know you’re getting quality coffee that sustains the environment as a whole.

Casabrews Espresso Machine Review

Casabrews is a relatively new espresso and coffee machine manufacturer that was established in 2020. Casabrews mission is to create streamlined and modern espresso machines that are simple enough for casual espresso drinkers while being efficient and delicious enough for home barista enthusiasts.

And to be honest, they are doing just that. With features in Forbes, Cuisine At Home and getting a 9.9 rating from Buyers Guide, Casabrews is certainly adding competition for long-standing manufacturers like De’Longhi and Breville.

Casabrews sent us their 5700Gense Espresso Machine that has a built-in grinder to test and review, and we are quite impressed with the quality and ease of this espresso machine. You can get your own using our readers discount code RC45%OFF at checkout for 40% off!

Now let’s jump into the details of this up-and-coming espresso machine.

Casabrews Espresso Machine Review

About the 5700Gense All-in-One Espresso Machine

On Sale

Off the bat, I will say that this espresso machine is well worth the money and is really an all-inclusive machine that leaves very little to be desired.

With a 15-step espresso burr grinder, 91 oz water reservoir, powerful steam wand, and multiple accessories for brewing, cleaning, and maintenance, I have not had to invest in any additional brewing tools other than the coffee beans themselves.

The first machine I received unfortunately got damaged in transit, with the inner pieces of the grinder getting broken, causing the grinder to malfunction upon the second or third use.

I was able to reach out to Casabrews customer support via email and was impressed with the quick response time and the efficiency in finding the issue and sending me a replacement machine. (Don’t worry, I’ll expand more on that in the customer support section of the review!)

I have now been using this espresso machine daily, often multiple times throughout the day, for over a month, and am not disappointed. Let’s break it down feature by feature with a roundup of the pros and cons at the end.

Features and Specs

The Casabrew 5700Gense Espresso Machine is a semi-automatic brewer that comes with a grinder and frother for an all-inclusive espresso machine experience.

Casabrews Espresso Machine brews coffee

Both the steam wand and grinder are professional grade, along with the 20 bar pressure pump that has automated shot-pulling times.

The 15-tick setting grinder also has automated grinding times that can be customized and Casabrew includes an extra grinder base in case of malfunctioning.

Casabrews Espresso Machine front

Casabrew also includes a set of accessories and tools that help maintain the quality and longevity of the espresso machine in addition to a diagnostic booklet that has visual aids.

5700Gense Exterior Look

Part of Casabrews mission in creating their espresso machines is to add a streamlined, classic look to the brewer’s exteriors.

The 5700Gense is a beautiful stainless steel espresso machine that has black accents and a button-controlled interface.

Casabrews Espresso Machine next to a brewed cup of coffee

The Gense reaches just above 18 inches with the bean hopper installed, while only being 11.2 inches wide with a depth of 12.8 inches. This makes it great for medium and large kitchens.

The espresso machine weighs just over 22 pounds and sits comfortably on a counter while not being too heavy to move around slightly if needed.

The water reservoir sits at the back of the espresso machine, being easily removable by lifting up. The tank can hold 91 oz which is fairly large and can last a full week if making 1-2 drinks a day.

Operations and Controls

The Gense is designed to be very user-friendly and is operated primarily by four push buttons. The power and hot water buttons are directly above the grinder and next to the classically styled round pressure gauge that shows the pressure being used in real-time.

Casabrews Espresso Machine buttons close up

The brewing start buttons are directly above the group head and to the right of the pressure gauge with the two options of single or double-shot brew times.

These options are preprogrammed brewing times that can be changed to meet your customized time frame.

The grinder is operated by a small button that gets activated when you press the portafilter under the grinder. This is also a preprogrammed allotted time that can easily be stopped mid-way or changed to your ideal grinding dose.

Lastly, the steam wand distributes water with the press of the hot water button, while the steam function is utilized by the dial on the right side of the espresso machine.

Casabrews Espresso Machine brews milk

The operation manual gives clear and precise directions on how to customize programming for grinding and espresso brewing, while also giving a key code and troubleshooting directions for when the machine is not operating as expected.

Each button has a ring of light around it which helps indicate when the espresso machine is ready and warmed, if the water reservoir is in need of refilling, or for any other malfunction that may occur.

Grinder

The Gense is an all-in-one espresso machine thanks to its steel, conical burr grinder. This grinder has 15 espresso grind settings that allow you to fine-tune and dial in your ideal delicious espresso.

With a hopper that can hold half a pound of beans, this grinder is easy to use and adjust and incredibly easy for cleaning as well (see more in the cleaning and maintenance section).

Grind time is preset for 14 seconds, but can easily be adjusted to a custom time. The portafilter sits securely in the set, allowing for a hands-free grinding experience.

Heating System

The Gense has a PID temp control that keeps brewing temperatures between 90-96 degrees. This is not manually adjustable, but you can easily preheat the machine if you enjoy your espresso on the hotter side.

Simply run one or two full espresso shot cycles with the portafilter empty. This heats up the machine thoroughly while also warming up the stainless steel in the group head and filter.

Pump and Pressure of Brewing

The pressure gauge allows you to read the real-time workings of the 20-bar Italian pump. While brewing, you will see how the gauge tracks the pressure building up and being released throughout the process. This can give you direct feedback about the espresso shot pulled before you even taste it.

Casabrews Espresso Machine brews coffee

If the pump is unable to reach the ideal pressure zone (between 5-12 bars), you can expect your espresso to be very weak, watery, and under-extracted. This informs you that you did not put enough grinds in or that the grinds are too coarse, allowing the water to saturate and pass through the puck far too quickly.

Each basket size has a marked MAX line. Your grinds should reach this line once they have been evenly distributed and tamped down. This means filling the grinds up into a mound that reaches above the brim of the basket prior to tamping.

Casabrews Espresso Machine brews coffee

If you overpacked your portafilter, or the grinds are too fine, you will notice the pressure gauge goes beyond the “espresso zone” and your espresso is very likely to be very thick, bitter, and acidic.

Brewing

Brewing times are preset and programmed based on the one or two-shot options. Once you press the brew button, you can walk away knowing that the espresso will cut off once done. Brewing includes a pre-infusion time, which allows your beans to be saturated before being brought up to full pressure.

You can stop the shot earlier than programmed by pressing the brew button again, or program your own brew times by following the steps in the manual.

Steamer

The steam wand is operated by a 1500W Thermocoil that allows for a powerful steaming experience. Preheating the steamer takes less than a minute, allowing for a quick transition between brewing espresso shots and steaming your milk.

Casabrews Espresso Machine brews milk in a metal mug

Although it certainly does not have the power of a plumbed steam wand, you can heat a full steaming pitcher in a minute or two and get deliciously creamy milk that has lovely microfoam for the perfect latte.

Accessories

You get everything you need for brewing and maintaining the Gense with this all-inclusive espresso machine.

accessories from Casabrews Espresso Machine

Starting with the portafilter, you will receive two basket sizes that are easily interchangeable from the portafilter – single and double shot sizes.

Filter Holder coffee machine

Along with these two baskets, Casabrews includes a grinds distributor that helps even your grinds, a tamper for ensuring your grinds are tightly packed, and a rubber mat you can use to help stabilize the portafilter while doing so.

The steam wand is accompanied by a 12-ounce stainless steel pitcher for frothing milk, as well as a tool for unclogging the steamer wand.

Lastly, Casabrews includes two other cleaning and maintenance tools and a coffee scoop for measuring your beans.

Cleaning and Maintenance

I have had my machine for a month and have found cleaning and daily maintenance easy to keep on top of. With the portafilter set that holds the basket in place, you get almost no loose grinds as they fall directly into the basket.

The portafilter and group head are easy to clean once used. Simply dispose of the used puck and rinse your portafilter in another espresso cycle. The drip tray will catch the water and hold several ounces before needing to be emptied, which is made visible by the red tab that will pop up once full.

The steam wand can easily be cleaned with a wet washcloth, although I highly suggest using the hot water function to unclog the hole directly after using the steamer.

The surface of the espresso machine cleans off easily with a damp washcloth, without leaving streaks.

Although I have yet to descale the machine, Casabrews includes multiple forms of instructions for descaling. There are videos on their website that break it down, as well as detailed instructions in the user manual.

The espresso machine will run a self-cleaning descaling session with simple activation and Casabrews recommends descaling your Gense every 2-3 months for best quality.

The grinder is easy and accessible for cleaning as well, as the grinder easily pops out, allowing access to the conical burr. Casabrews includes a detailed walkthrough of this process on their website, which is great for visual learners.

With the provided tools, you can easily dust out all the grinds as well as get in there with a vacuum if necessary. Casabrews recommends cleaning the grinder every 2-3 weeks, or once every week if you use oily beans.

Casabrews Customer Support and Warranty

As mentioned at the top of the article, I did have to reach out to customer support due to the machine getting damaged in transit.

I emailed them explaining the issue and got a response within 24 hours asking further questions and giving several suggestions for things I could try to fix the issue.

When I still was unable to get the grinder to operate, customer support requested a video. Upon receiving the video, they were able to diagnose the issue, realizing that the inner workings of the grinder got damaged during delivery. They quickly sent a replacement machine for me at no extra charge.

brewed milk is poured into a cup of espresso

Every email exchanged was incredibly kind, respectful, and informative and I was very impressed with customer support.

The 5700Gense comes with a one-year limited warranty, but you can register your product and get a two-year warranty when you follow the directions provided upon receiving your machine.

So How Does It Perform?

Now that we’ve covered all the basics of each aspect of this all-inclusive Espresso Machine, let’s get down to our verdict; is this machine worth the money and hype?

I definitely think so. As a professional barista who has been craving an at-home espresso machine for years, I am very pleased with how well this espresso machine operates and the quality of lattes (my personal favorite) I am able to get again and again.

Casabrews Espresso Machine brews a cup of espresso

The grinder is very even and maintains consistency in grind sizes. Casabrews suggests starting between a 7 and 8 grind and I found that perfect for the beans I had, with very little dialing in needed.

All of the accessories included, but most notably the grind distributor and tamper, are very high quality and do not leave you wanting.

Filter Holder from Casabrews Espresso Machine

Between the programmable grinding time, the grind distributer, and the rubber mat that helps keep the portafilter even when tamping, I am able to replicate the same quality of espresso over and over again. On the off chance that I over or under-extract, I’ve been able to easily pinpoint what went wrong and adjust with a new flavorful shot.

hand presses the button of Casabrews Espresso Machine

The steam wand is also consistent with temperature and pressure, allowing for delicious microfoam, which for me is usually where most at-home espresso machines disappoint. The 5700Gense does not disappoint though. I am able to get delicious steamed milk again and again with the quality of this heat coil steamer.

cup of coffee with milk heart prepared by Casabrews Espresso Machine

I love how sleek and modern the espresso machine looks in my kitchen, and enjoy being able to make fancy espresso drinks for myself and my friends when visiting. The machine performs well for making several drinks in a row, making it perfect for larger households or office spaces.

I also found the machine very easy to use and very intuitive, so that even non-coffee enthusiasts would be able to learn how to operate this espresso machine easily.

On Sale

Summary

If you are looking for a good quality espresso machine that is under $1K and needs extra accessories or tools, I highly recommend looking into Casabrews and considering their All-In-One 5700 Gense Espresso Machine with Grinder. It provides ease, consistency, and good-quality espresso.

All About Nespresso Vertuo Pods

As you might have assumed, Nespresso Vertuo pods are different from the original Nespresso pods in a few ways. Firstly, the Vertuo pods look different from the regular ones, as they have more of a dome shape.

This means that the original capsules won’t work in the Vertuo machines and you can use the Vertuo capsules in the Nespresso Vertuo machines. These include the Vertuo, Evoluo, VertuoPlus, Vertuo Plus Deluxe, Vertuo Next, Vertuo Next Premium, and Vertuo Next Deluxe.

Moreover, regular Nespresso pods can only make espresso but the ground coffee beans in the Vertuo pods can make both espresso and brewed coffee in various forms. If you have a Vertuo machine, you can broaden your horizons to not only espresso but also double espresso, gran lungo, and brewed coffee.

Nespresso Vertuo Pod Size Options

There are six different sizes with the Vertuo capsules: the espresso, the double espresso, the gran lungo which is a long shot, the coffee/mug which is 7.77 ounces, the alto which is 12 ounces, and the carafe which is 18 ounces. However, it’s important to know that the alto and carafe options can only be used in certain Vertuo machines.

With the barcode on the edge of each capsule, you can rest assured that every pod will be brewed specifically how it’s meant to in order to bring out the flavors. There are more than forty different Vertuo capsules that have different roasts, flavors, and sizes.

Nespresso Vertuo Pod Specifics

Nespresso also has an intensity rating of 1 to 11 on their Vertuo selections. This is based on characteristics such as roast, body, and bitterness. Basically, it means if a coffee has a higher rating then it’s a stronger tasting brew.

It’s usually recommended that you only use the Nespresso brand of coffee pods as using anything else can damage your machine. You can use Starbucks pods because they’re actually made by Nespresso, but other than that it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, it’s a good thing there are so many options just under the Nespresso brand.

The Best Nespresso Vertuo Pods

Here are just some of the best Nespresso Vertuo capsules that you can purchase to get the most out of your specialty machine and make a delicious cup of coffee every time.

Espresso and Double Espresso

First up is the classic espresso, which you can get regular or as a double espresso in some options. In this category alone, there are so many pods to choose from.

Altissio

The Altissio coffee capsule is a dark roast single espresso pick that brews 1.35 ounces of Robusta and Arabica coffee. With an intensity of 9, it’s a rather strong sip that sits at 63 milligrams of caffeine. You’ll find that this full-bodied and creamy espresso shot is perfect to drink straight or even in an affogato.

Diavolitto

Going up in intensity, the Diavolitto is an 11, with a very high caffeine content of 150 milligrams. Another dark roast made of Robusta and Arabica coffee, it’s a regular espresso of 1.35 ounces that’s very strong, bitter, and bold.

Jamaican Blue Mountain

One of the special reserve picks is the Jamaican Blue Mountain, a 1.35-ounce espresso that’s got an intensity of 7. It’s described as having exotic woody notes, making for a very smooth cup. This is also known to be one of the best and most expensive coffees in the world due to the lack of bitterness and the split roast with two dark-roasted coffees.

Hawaii Kona

Another special reserve, the Hawaii Kona is a 1.35-ounce espresso pod with an intensity of 6. This is a pure Arabica coffee grown in the volcanic soil of Hawaii with notes that are fruity, exotic, tropical, and smooth. It’s also another split roast, featuring both light and dark, to give you an earthy and sweet brew.

Starbucks Blonde Espresso Roast

On Sale

Next up is the Blonde Espresso Roast from Starbucks, which is easily the most frequently purchased Starbucks Nespresso capsule. It has an intensity of 6, a caffeine content of 72 milligrams, and is a very smooth and sweet Arabica coffee. The 1.35-ounce espresso shot is the perfect way to make your favorite Starbucks drink in the comfort of your own home.

Bianco Doppio

No products found.

Moving onto the double espresso options, the Bianco Doppio is a light roast Arabica coffee that contains just under 200 milligrams of caffeine. At 2.7 ounces, this capsule is a sweet brew that Nespresso mentions was designed to pair with milk as the present aromas then melt into caramel and sweet biscuit notes.

Double Espresso Scuro

On Sale

The Double Espresso Scuro is a medium roast Robust and Arabica coffee that ranks at an intensity of 11 and has 180 milligrams of caffeine. The 2.7 ounces in this brew are dark, bold, and smoky with intense hints of cocoa and vanilla.

Double Espresso Chiaro

A medium roast Arabica from Central and South America, the Double Espresso Chiaro is also high in caffeine, containing 180 milligrams. It’s got an intensity of 8 and pours out at 2.7 ounces. Nespresso describes this pod as having woody and earthy notes that are dense and wild.

Ice Leggero

The last double espresso we’ll mention is the Ice Leggero, a medium roast Arabica with an intensity level of 8. Its 2.7 ounces has a caffeine content of more than 130 milligrams with fruity and light notes of cereal and biscuit. It’s perfect for iced drinks and complements any milk pretty decadently.

Gran Lungo

The second type of Nespresso Vertuo pod we’ll talk about is the Gran Lungo, which is essentially a long shot with 5.07 ounces. These are just gonna give you a bit more coffee than the espresso or double espresso does.

Arondio

On Sale

A Gran Lungo with an intensity of 6 is the Arondio, which is a mild medium roast coffee blend that contains Colombian Arabica and Guatemalan Robusta. It’s described as being mild and round with smooth notes of cereal and a slight acidity. A light, sweet, nutty, and balanced cup of coffee.

Inizio

Another option with distinct cereal notes to it is the Inizio Gran Lungo, which is a split roast that has an intensity of 4. With the Ethiopian Arabica, there’s a lighter roast for a sweet floral hint, and with the Kenyan coffee, there’s a darker roast for a strong body. It’s smooth, warm, and rich with a delicious combination of floral and cereal flavors.

Fortado

On Sale

Next is the Fortado capsule, which is a medium roast Gran Lungo that has an intensity of 8 and a rather high caffeine content of 200 milligrams. A blend of Robusta and Arabica coffees provides an intense and full-bodied brew that has hints of cocoa and a woody/earthy undertone. It has only a subtle sweetness, as it’s more strong and rich than anything.

Costa Rica

The last of our Gran Lungo options is a master-crafted single origin from Costa Rica. This is a medium roast Arabica coffee with an intensity of 7, a high caffeine content of 135 milligrams, and a flavor profile that’s malty and sweet. It goes through a specialized fermentation process in hot-spring waters, providing a clean tasting balanced brew.

Coffee/Mug

The category with the most Vertuo capsule options is the Coffee/Mug size, which contains 7.77 ounces of brewed coffee for a classic cup of joe. We’ll just mention a few of the most popular picks.

Solelio

We’ll start off with a light roast Kenyan and Colombian Arabica coffee that has a low intensity of 2. This is a brew that’s well-balanced, smooth, and gentle. With a light body, it has a sweet fruity taste from notes of red fruits and a slight bitterness overall.

Melozio

Moving up on the intensity scale, the Melozio pod is a rather popular medium split roast that sits at a rating of 6. The Arabica coffee contains 165 milligrams of caffeine and there’s even a Melozio Boost which contains 20% more caffeine than the original. It’s smooth, balanced, rounded, and has notes of nuts and cereal.

Odacio

Next, the Odacio coffee/mug capsule is another Arabica medium roast with an intensity score of 7 and a caffeine content of 165 milligrams. Nespresso describes it as bold and lively with intense flavors that are fruity, slightly acidic, and contain notes of cereal once again.

Stormio

A step up to the intensity of 8, the Stormio pod is a dark roast coffee with a high amount of caffeine and a rich, strong flavor. The Arabica coffee’s profile is spiced, woody, and earthy and it’s not a super bitter sip, but rather more smooth.

Intenso

As the name suggests, the Intenso Vertuo capsule is a strong Robusta and Arabica coffee with an intensity of 9. It has a bold bitterness and a dark sweetness from notes of toasted brown sugar and roasted chocolate. This one is definitely for those who crave a more intense and in-your-face cup of joe.

Mexico

One of the master-crafted single-origin coffees available in the mug size is the Mexico medium roast Robusta capsule. It has an intensity of 7, a high caffeine content, and is said to have a flavor profile that’s intense and spicy. This double-washed brew is woody, earthy, and a rather popular one to have in cold coffee drinks.

Colombia

The second master-crafted single origin is the Colombia pod, which is a light roast, washed Arabica coffee with an intensity of 5. It’s got a deliciously sweet and winey flavor profile of fruity notes such as candied apple and red berry. This cup is not too bitter, but it does have a good amount of acidity.

Bianco Forte

The last coffee/mug Vertuo capsule we’ll mention is the Bianco Forte, which is a dark roast Arabica coffee that contains 165 milligrams of caffeine and is listed under Nespresso’s Barista Creations. This option was created to be served with milk as it’s an intense and dark brew that’s balanced, rich, and full-bodied.

Alto

A quick little category we’ll mention is the Alto, otherwise known as the XL coffee, which is a step up from the regular coffee/mug size. This brew contains 12 ounces of coffee, for those needing an extra pep in their step, but can only be used exclusively in Vertuo Creatista, Lattissima, Next, and Pop machines.

The regular Pour-Over Style is medium-roasted coffee that has a flavor profile that is roasted, smoky, woody, and earthy. It’s intense but easy to drink and has a full body. At the top, you’ll find a delicious crown of crema, which gives it a delicious and creamy texture.

Our final Nespresso Vertuo pod pick is the Carafe Pour-Over Style Mild, which is an Arabica coffee that’s more on the lighter side. It’s smooth and balanced with notes of toasted cereal, malt, and nuts. This carafe of deliciousness is slightly sweet with minimal bitterness and acidity.

Wrapping Up

We know, that was a lot of options to go through, and that’s not even all of them! But, hopefully, this list helped to narrow down some for you if you’re looking for a new capsule to try in your Nespresso Vertuo machine or you’re thinking about making the switch.

The great thing about the Vertuo pods is their variety in sizes, roasts, and flavors. There’s practically something for everyone and so many ways to customize your coffee once it’s been brewed. If you can’t find one you’re particularly drawn to here, you can always head over to Nespresso’s website for even more brews.

Happy Caffeinating!

If you’re someone who’s interested in the health benefits of coffee, I’m sure you’ve come across some coffee roasting companies that offer beans that are organic, low-acid, and full of their natural benefits. These are all great options for people who are looking for even healthier coffee or tend to have issues with coffees that are higher in acid.

The coffee company, For Wellness, not only provides people with this type of coffee, but they also sell powdered coffee supplements that enhance these benefits and offer an even healthier experience!

For Wellness Review

What is For Wellness?

For Wellness was branded after the idea of literally “coffee for wellness,” which was started by the professional golfer Phil Mickelson, who was looking for a way to improve his mental and physical health, and his performance coach Dave Phillips, who introduced him to coffee as a solution.

Dave, who is also Phil’s friend, showed the golfer all of the benefits that coffee has to offer when it comes to health. Dave has a strong base of coffee knowledge from when he grew up in East Africa, where he learned about coffee from the source!

Before Dave, Phil didn’t know about all the great things coffee provides. So, with this revelation, he decided to start For Wellness with his coach. Since they started, they’ve crafted some high-quality healthy brews that are just as yummy as they are good for you.

Moreover, Dave and Phil also introduced a new product, The Good Stuff, which is their powdered coffee supplement that I’ll talk about a bit more later on!

For Wellness actually sent me a package of some of their products so that I could try them out and give a little review. Inside there was a 12-ounce bag of their Medium Roast Whole Bean Coffee, a 6.56-ounce bag of The Good Stuff, a 4.7-ounce bag of The Good Stuff: Focus, and a sample bag of their new Recovery Gummies.

Whole Bean Coffee: Medium Roast

At the time of writing, For Wellness only has two coffee options: their Medium Roast and their Dark Roast. Both of these can come in whole bean form or pre-ground, but for this review, I was sent their Whole Bean Medium Roast.

For Wellness Whole Bean Coffee Medium Roast pack

This is a 100% Arabica coffee that’s completely organic and also maintains all of the health benefits that are naturally presented from growth. For Wellness makes sure that their coffee is packed with antioxidants that can help to prevent certain diseases.

For Wellness Whole Bean Coffee Medium Roast Coffee package stands on coffee beans

These beans are also gluten-free, anti-inflammatory, and free of any additives or artificial flavors. Benefits are aimed towards physical health and mental health, with regards to a better mood, increased energy, and better reaction times.

A pack of For Wellness Whole Bean Coffee Medium Roast Coffee stands next to a brewed cup of coffee

For Wellness’ traditional medium roast is smooth, balanced, and light-bodied. Tasting notes include tropical fruit and a clean finish. I brewed up a batch of drip with these beans and noticed that the aroma was presented as a bright, fruity, and sweet invitation to the cup.

The taste was nice and simple, featuring a slightly fruity acidity and a clean finish as the notes mention. It’s a delicious brew that’s a great addition to your morning!

The Good Stuff

As I talked about earlier, The Good Stuff is a product that For Wellness released. It’s essentially a powdered coffee supplement that can be added to your morning cup of black coffee. It can also be used in other drinks, such as smoothies and teas, but by adding a scoop to your coffee you can enhance all of the naturally occurring benefits in it.

For Wellness The Good Stuff coffee pack

If you don’t like the jitters that you get from caffeine, worry not because The Good Stuff also helps to reduce those while still providing focus. Other benefits of this supplement include fighting inflammation, supporting skin and joint health, and much more!

For Wellness The Good Stuff package is next to a brewed cup of coffee

The Good Stuff is made with L-Theanine for relaxation, Ceylon Cinnamon to help prevent diseases and repair bones, Collagen as a protein supplement, Himalayan Pink Salt to give you healthy skin and strong muscles, and C8 MCT Oil to give you that extra boost of energy.

For Wellness The Good Stuff package of coffee additives stands next to a brewed cup of coffee

I gave The Good Stuff a try by adding a scoop to a cup of the medium roast that I had brewed and found that it smelt strongly of cinnamon and spices. This was shown in the taste as well, which was spiced enough to even take away from the fruitiness of the brew. Instead, I was met with a warm and toasty cup of joe.

The Good Stuff: Focus

If you’re looking for something a bit more centered on providing you focus, For Wellness also came out with a variation of their supplement, called The Good Stuff: Focus. This option lets you get all of your health benefits with your morning brew and even gives you an extra boost of focus sans the negative side effects!

For Wellness The Good Stuff Focus coffee pack

With The Good Stuff: Focus, you get mental clarity, mood enhancement, and a delicious mocha taste, and it even stimulates your cognitive function. Everything that makes up the original blend of The Good Stuff is also presented in this supplement, with the addition of Theobromine.

A pack of For Wellness The Good Stuff Focus stands next to a brewed cup of coffee

Theobromine is a cocoa extract that gives this powder the extra boost of focus you’re looking for. Plus, it also promotes cardiovascular function and provides a slow release of energy, which is how you can drink it without getting the jitters!

an open package of For Wellness The Good Stuff Focus stands next to a cup of liquid

Putting a scoop of this into another cup of coffee, I noticed that the aroma was still spiced, but had the addition of chocolate to give off a bit more of a sweet smell. After I mixed it all up and gave it a sip, I discovered that this powder seemed to be a sweeter version of the original blend. It was like a yummy mocha coffee with a bit of spice!

Recovery Gummies

While this isn’t a coffee product from For Wellness, they did give me a sample pack of their Recovery Gummies. A newly released product, these are pre-workout gummies that give you a quick boost of energy and even reduce muscle soreness.

For Wellness Recovery Gummies

As is common in For Wellness products, these are full of antioxidants and can additionally replenish electrolytes. Plus, if you ask me, these are pretty tasty! They’re full of cherry flavors that are a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness.

The Recovery Gummies are made with VitaCherry Sport, which gives it its yummy flavor and provides muscle recovery, Glucose, which gives you the energy boost, and the aforementioned Electrolytes. In the basic pack of these gummies, there are around ten servings of up to three gummies!

Best French Press Coffee Makers

Uncomplicated certainly doesn’t mean generic! French presses come in different styles and sizes to suit baristas and home brewers of every kind. Here are our favorites:

Bodum Chambord French Press

On Sale

Quick — create a mental image of a French press. Did it look like the Chambord? If it did, it’s probably because this model still looks the same as it did in the 1950s!

Bodum’s flagship press comes with a heat-resistant borosilicate carafe, cradled by classy metal strips made of stainless steel or copper. The largely exposed glass means you get to see the action up close as you brew.

It’s an attractive, no-frills brewer that makes good coffee and looks good doing it. Pick among multiple sizes and your choice of materials and finishes to match your brew bar or kitchen counter.

Things We Like:

  • Timeless “cage” design and borosilicate glass make it light and easy to use
  • Metal parts don’t chip easily, thanks to a multi-step plating process
  • Lots of sizes, materials, and finishes to choose from

Things We Don’t:

  • The cage frame can easily flex or be bent out of shape
  • Not all material options (cork and copper) are dishwasher-safe

The Original French Press by Cafe Du Chateau

On Sale

If you prefer a bit of heft to your glass French press, then consider this premium model by Cafe Du Chateau. The frame, lid, and handle are all made of stainless steel, and its four-level filtration means less grit in your brews.

The Original French Press is available only in a single size (34oz or 1L) and is limited to the stainless steel finish. But if you already like how it looks, the no-questions-asked lifetime warranty makes it an even more attractive choice.

Things We Like:

  • Two mesh screens sandwiched in the plunger help make a cleaner cup than a standard coffee press
  • Lifetime warranty with great customer support

Things We Don’t:

  • Handle with care! The thin metal bits connecting the cylindrical grip to the frame can feel a bit sharp if your fingers rub against them.

ESPRO P7 Insulated French Press

Here are two things about French press coffee that I don’t care for: First — silty cups. And second — having to pour the coffee out immediately after plunging. The ESPRO P7 promises to put an end to my press pot problems with its patented, double-sealed micro filter system.

And it does this just as advertised! The micro filter system does a great job of trapping the grounds within two nested filters. And when you plunge down, two silicone seals keep the spent grinds away from the brew, meaning you can pour your coffee out precisely when you want to.

A double-walled stainless steel carafe that helps with heat retention rounds out this premium package. The P7 doesn’t come cheap, but for most folks, this is the endgame French press.

Things We Like:

  • Micro filter system is the cleanest we’ve used; optional paper filters allow you to brew even cleaner cups using a finer grind
  • Also great for brewing loose-leaf tea or tisanes, even those with fine particles

Things We Don’t:

  • Not a cinch to clean — you have to take apart the stacked plastic mesh filters to wash them properly
  • Not the easiest press pot to plunge! That stellar filtration system means more effort is needed to push down.
  • Very expensive. You can buy a burr grinder, a cheap French press, and a bag of coffee for this much.

BAYKA French Press Coffee Maker

On Sale

Most French presses brew coffee pretty much the same way. But this brewer from online lifestyle brand BAYKA does it in style with two unique stainless steel finishes — dark pewter and copper.

The carafe itself is heat-treated borosilicate glass, and the plunger assembly uses the popular four-level filtration setup used by other press pots.

This press comes in two sizes and is an affordable and stylish choice if you’re into the two colors we mentioned. But do watch out for the carafe — users have reported uneven edges, a dribbly spout, and measurement markings peeling off easily.

Things We Like:

  • Glass is easy to remove for cleaning compared to other brands

Things We Don’t:

  • Quality issues with the glass carafe

Secura Insulated Coffee Press

On Sale

Curious about double-walled stainless steel French presses that don’t break the bank? Pick the Secura Insulated Coffee Press, and you’re off to a great start!

Its biggest feature is the double-walled 18/10 stainless-steel carafe, which retains heat better than glass. Filtration duties are handled with a traditional 3-layer system, but there are two extra screens in the box that you can stack together for even cleaner brews.

Multiple size and finish options might make you look twice, even if you aren’t a fan of the utilitarian style of a stainless steel press.

Things We Like:

  • Lots of options: Four sizes and five metal finishes
  • Extra filters (that you can stack on top of the installed one) are a welcome bonus

Things We Don’t:

  • The bushing holding down the plunger assembly tends to come loose quite easily. Don’t misplace it!

Bodum Brazil French Press

On Sale

Leave it to Bodum to make plastic look good. The Brazil isn’t quite as premium-looking as the Chambord, but it looks just as classy, if a bit understated.

This press uses the same borosilicate glass carafe as its cousin, but the metal cladding and lid are instead made with BPA-free plastic. The plunger assembly works the same way too, except for a plastic nut holding down the mesh filter in place.

Considering it costs only half as much as the Chambord, the Bodum Brazil is an excellent option if you’re in the market for a lightweight glass French press.

Things We Like:

  • This simple press pot from a reputable maker is attractive and affordable

Things We Don’t:

  • The plastic nut in the plunger unscrews easily, and hot water contact doesn’t help things. Take care of it!
  • Removing the beaker for cleaning is not the easiest affair. You have to carefully “unhook” the top handle braced on the rim of the glass.

Stanley Adventure All-in-One Boil + Brew French Press

If you MUST have a good cup of coffee while out camping in the woods, then consider swapping out your portable soup kettle with one of these. The All-in-One Boil + Brew is composed of a stovetop-friendly pot with a BPA-free plastic plunger system nested within.

The 32oz pot is made of durable stainless steel, which is great for making hearty stews or warming soups on the campfire. Then for coffee time, use the same pot to boil some water. Add your coffee, let it steep, and slowly insert the plastic plunger to filter your brew.

Pair this with a good manual burr grinder and you’re off to the races!

Things We Like:

  • Collapsible steel handle makes this pot + brewer combo even more compact
  • The rugged nylon plunger insert with the integrated mesh filter is surprisingly easy to clean

Things We Don’t:

  • The pot’s advertised capacity is only true without the plastic plunger inserted. For coffee, you can only make about half that amount (17 to 18oz) without making a mess.
  • Lid does not fit securely on top without the plastic plunger

Frieling Double-Walled Stainless Steel French Press

Remember the saying “You get what you pay for?” You can put those fears to rest if you go for a Frieling French Press.

Every little detail just screams quality with a Frieling. 100% 18/10 Stainless Steel construction means absolutely no plastic in sight. Both the carafe and the lid are double-walled, meaning superior heat retention compared to the competition.

What about the brew? Sediment-free! The plunger is constructed with a patented dual-stage filtration system, care of a pre-filter stacked with an Italian fine mesh screen. Then pour your brew with confidence with the no-drip spout.

(Still not convinced? We give this premium-priced press pot our two cents in this review here.)

Things We Like:

  • Durable and dishwasher-friendly, thanks to its all-stainless-steel construction
  • Over-engineered plunger/filtration system keeps brews silt-free
  • Options! Pick from five different sizes and two classy steel finishes (brushed and polished).

Things We Don’t:

  • The lid itself does not have a rotating “off” lock nor a spout filter screen, so be careful when plunging a filled press
  • A little bit difficult to hold the handle due to the brewer’s weight, especially on larger models

OXO BREW Venture Shatter-Resistant Travel French Press

On Sale

Do you trust no one but yourself to brew coffee wherever in the world you may be? Then the OXO BREW Venture might be your perfect travel companion.

It’s made with a rugged plastic exterior, plus a durable and shatter-resistant carafe made of Tritan. It’s not glass, but this heat-resistant, BPA-free plastic will keep your press safe against bangs and drops better than glass ever will.

Other features you’ll appreciate in this lightweight press include an easy-grip handle, and a large, soft-touch plunger knob. A 32-oz capacity means you get to share coffee with a travel buddy or two!

Things We Like:

  • Lightweight, sturdy, and easy to use — one of the best presses to travel with
  • Gasketed filter assembly makes it easier to clean than traditional spring-type ones

Things We Don’t:

  • A plastic carafe might not be for everyone
  • Just one color and size option

ESPRO P1 Travel Coffee Press

For the best, cleanest cups of French press coffee that you can take on the go, look no further than the ESPRO P1 Travel Coffee Press!

The P1 uses the same micro filter system present in its larger cousins, scaled down to fit a 14oz travel mug. The mug is likewise made of double-walled stainless steel.

Since the plunger is designed to keep grounds away from the brew after you press down, you can close off the leak-proof lid and keep your coffee hot for hours!

Things We Like:

  • Insulated travel mug design with leak-proof lid truly keeps coffee hot for hours, like advertised
  • ESPRO’s micro filter system is one of the best at filtering silt and sludge from brews

Things We Don’t:

  • The micro filter system isn’t easy to clean, so definitely don’t take this camping
  • Only makes 10oz of coffee with the filter inserted

What Should You Look For In A French Press

Most French presses on the market follow the simple construction of a lid and plunger that fits on top of and into a carafe. But there are certain aspects to consider that might be a better match for your preferences and brewing style.

How Many Cups It Makes

French presses come in many different sizes, from small brewers for the solo drinker to huge pitchers good for a crowd. If you see models described by cup capacity, keep in mind that a “cup” in this instance is just 4.25oz.

Check out this quick size guide and their cup conversions:

  • 3-cup / 12oz / 350ml
  • 4-cup / 17oz / 500ml
  • 8-cup / 34oz / 1L
  • 12-cup / 51oz / 1.5L

Carafe Material

The material of your press pot’s carafe affects its durability and heat-retentive properties (as well as the most obvious detail — how it looks!). Here are a few of the options available:

Glass

A French press carafe is traditionally made of glass. Glass is resistant to most stains and is easier to clean than other materials. Then there’s the matter of aesthetics — not only are glass presses often handsome and elegant-looking, but they also allow you to watch the brew as it happens.

When picking a glass French press, look for terms that describe its toughness and heat resistance. Examples are borosilicate, tempered, and annealed.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel presses can take a harder beating than their glass counterparts. They often feature double-walled construction, which helps keep your brew temperatures stable (more on this later).

Another factor is the long-term user experience. Unlike a glass carafe that you’ll likely replace at any sight of a blemish, there might be concerns with usability if you continue to use a dented or scratched-up press made of metal, especially if the material damage happens on the inside.

Tritan Plastic

Another material gaining popularity in food service applications is the copolymer Tritan. According to its manufacturer Eastman, this material is odor and taste-resistant, shatter-proof, BPA-free, and just as clear as glass.

There’s another type of Tritan called Tritan Renew that contains up to 50% recycled material, without any penalties in quality or strength. Food safe and sustainable — what more can you ask for?

Whether this persuades you to use plastic or not is another matter. But the technology’s certainly come a long way. If you needed another reason, this material has the best temperature stability too!

How Much It Filters Out

Filtering coffee made with a press pot is super easy. Gently press down on the top of the plunger, pour the coffee out, and you’re good to go. Simple, effective, and needs little reinvention.

Plunger Anatomy

Where manufacturers choose to differentiate is how they handle filtration in each of their plunger systems. Here are some of what’s out there:

Single Filter Screen

Most classic designs use the classic combination of a filter screen sandwiched between a cross plate and a spring plate (which pushes against the carafe’s inner wall). Bodum uses this tried-and-true setup for most of their French presses.

This one’s the easiest to plunge, and the simplest to clean. The result is the classic French press profile: a rich, oily cup of coffee. Yum!

Dual or Multi Filter Screens

An improvement to the single filter system would be to simply stack filter screens on top of the other. Many midrange and premium French presses come with two stacked screens by default, and some even pack extras in the box.

When you see ‘triple-layer’ or ‘four-level’ being used to describe their product’s capabilities, it’s probably just the same dual-screen affair. Manufacturers are known to count the spring plate or the slotted spout filter on the lid towards the total number of “filters” in their marketing materials.

Different-sized Screens

Some high-end manufacturers like Frieling and ESPRO use patented filtration systems that combine two different screens. One with larger gaps acts as a pre-filter to keep most of the coffee under the carafe, while a finer mesh screen prevents silt and sludge from mucking up the brew.

This setup often requires a little bit more force to plunge, and a more involved effort come clean-up time. But the results can be rewarding, especially if you enjoy a cleaner cup.

Spring Plate Alternative

Some models use a plate fitted with silicone or rubber on top of their filter screens, such as those that are made for travel or outdoor use. A solid compressive ring can be much quicker to rinse off than traditional spring plates where coffee grounds can get stuck between the coils.

Less water for clean-up is always welcome when it comes to brewing on the go, but one drawback is that these materials offer greater resistance when plunged.

Capability To Retain Heat

Wish your French press coffee could stay hot longer? You should just buy any double-walled French press and call it a day, right? Not so fast — it seems that this carafe type isn’t the end-all-be-all for cold cups.

In fact, all but one of the double-walled French presses in this guide failed to show true vacuum-insulated properties. Sure, they all retain heat better than any material with a single layer. But even if you pre-heat the carafe, you won’t get piping-hot cups out of them for more than a handful of minutes.

From our list, only the Espro P1 Travel Press has a fully-enclosed system, with its screw-on, no-leak lid. Even the plunger knob is designed to go inside the thing! No gaps for heat to escape means a better chance of keeping your brew truly hot for hours.

So are there any other benefits to going double-walled? Yes, the entire brew will stay comparably hotter, which means more efficient flavor extraction. Our article on Glass vs Stainless Steel French Press explains this in depth if you’re keen to learn more.

Portability

Most French presses will probably stay on your counter. But if you want to brew good coffee while traveling or going camping, rule out models with delicate glass carafes.

Your best bet for durability is one made of stainless steel, but these can be heavy. Carafes made with newer plastic resins such as Tritan or SAN (Styrene-acrylonitrile resin) are also shatter-resistant and can be a good option to take with you if weight is an issue.

Ease of Cleaning

Since French presses have their filters built into the plunger, you’ll have to clean out all of the coffee gunk yourself. The ideal way to do this for press pots of all types is to handwash all the parts with some mild soap and a soft sponge.

What about the dishwasher? Stainless steel, borosilicate glass, and heat-resistant plastics are all dishwasher-safe, so you can rest easy if the parts of your French press are made with any of these materials.

If your press has wood, cork, copper, or brass bits, keep these out of the dishwasher. While silicone and double-walled steel carafes are technically dishwasher-safe, it’s a good idea to place these on the top rack to avoid issues with long-term durability.

French Press FAQs

Is French Press Coffee Better Than Drip?

If you like a rich cup! French press coffee is more full-bodied than drip because the screen filter lets more of the coffee through, oils and silt and all. If you enjoy cleaner cups of coffee, using the drip method with a paper filter will give you a brew with more clarity.

What’s The Best Grind Size To Use For French Press?

A general rule of thumb would be to use a medium-coarse to coarse grind. The more fines (dust-like particles) in your grind, the more sludge you’ll get at the bottom of your cup. For more on coffee grind sizes, check out this handy chart here.

What Is The Ideal Brew Time For French Press Coffee?

Let the coffee sit with hot water for at least four minutes with a medium-coarse grind. But full-immersion brewing loses extraction efficiency after time, so you can try a longer brew if your coffee isn’t flavorful enough.

Can You Make Tea With A French Press?

Sure! French presses are great tea brewers, as long as they’re of the looseleaf variety. Try to avoid dust tea (such as what you get in tea bags) because those might clog up your strainer or make muddy cups.

What Else Can I Do With My French Press?

You can make cold brew coffee with your press! Just remember to use more coffee than you would for a hot brew. A good starting recipe is one part ground coffee to ten parts cool water by weight (1:10 ratio). Simply leave it in the fridge overnight, then plunge and filter it out the next day.

Another cool trick you can try is to make frothy milk for creamy cappuccinos. Simply fill a small French press a quarter of the way with warm or cold milk, then move the plunger down and up repeatedly. In seconds, your milk will have increased in volume. Ta-da — instant milk foam!

Just Take The Plunge

For a brew method that’s easy to pick up, there’s nothing quite as simple as a French press. So if you find all the minute details and differences confusing, our top pick, the reliable Bodum Chambord, offers the quintessential French press experience.

If you are looking to upgrade or want to splurge on a premium model with modern features, the ESPRO P7 Insulated French Press is the way to go. That patented micro filter system truly is a game changer, especially if you prefer a cleaner cup.

For on-the-go brewing, we’re fans of the OXO Brew Venture. It’s durable, lightweight, and is easy to use and clean. Best of all, it looks and feels like a regular French press!

All our picks brew coffee virtually the same way, but we believe it’s worth seeking out that press that’s the perfect fit for you.

Happy Caffienating!
