Which coffee brewing method takes the longest? What about the quickest? In my ten years of working in coffee, I’ve learned the ins and outs of practically every type of brewer.

Here are the short answers: Cold Brew takes the longest because you are trading hot water for extended brew times (in the hours, or even days!) What about the quickest? That depends if you factor in prep time.

The Aeropress has every brewer beat, from set-up to cup. But if we’re talking about brew time exclusively, an espresso machine clocks in at a speedy 20 to 35 seconds.

In this guide, we dissect brew durations and do some real-world testing on the most popular coffee brewers out there. Whether you’re a time-conscious individual needing quick caffeination, or a connoisseur with the patience to do a longer, more involved brew, we’ve got you covered!

which coffee brewing method takes the longest

Key Takeaways

  • Cold brew takes the longest to brew, ranging from several hours to a couple of days. If we only consider hot coffee, a moka pot takes a while to make a small cup.
  • Espresso from a machine has the quickest brew time, but an Aeropress is the fastest if preparation time is included. Pour-over drippers, French presses, and other similar manual brewing devices will take a few minutes longer than an Aeropress.
  • The best brewing method for you is the one you like best, as well as the one you’re willing to spend time and effort on.

Brewing Times in a Nutshell

The length of the whole brewing process is largely determined by how your coffee brewer brews — or how it squeezes the tasty solubles out of the ground coffee. Each type of brewing device approaches this somewhat differently, with distinct results in the cup as well.

Slowest Brewing Method: Cold Brew

Cold brew coffee is a brewing method that involves brewing coarsely ground coffee with cool water for a prolonged period, resulting in a concentrate that’s intense, less acidic, and shelf-stable.

Just how lengthy is this process? As fast as six hours for small-sized cold brew drippers, up to extended steeping times of 24 hours.

Very Quick Brewing Method: Aeropress

Originally designed as an espresso maker, the Aeropress has become well-regarded as a travel-friendly brewer that can make brewed coffee in dozens of different ways.

Using the classic recipe on their website can get you a cup in no more than two minutes!

Quickest Brewing Method: Espresso

Never mind the major equipment investment or the complexity of dialing in a shot. In terms of raw coffee brewing speed, nothing beats the 20 to 35 seconds it takes to brew an espresso!

How Other Popular Brewers Stack Up

What about drip coffeemakers, pour-over brewers, and French presses? These brew methods are among the most popular for home use. You most likely won’t have to spend more than ten minutes making coffee in the morning with one of these.

But the proof is in the pudding, so time for some testing!

Comparing Brew Methods: Our Considerations

Sure, we can look up the most popular recipes for each method, note down the brew times, and call it a day. But making coffee involves some preparation, which adds at least a few significant minutes to your routine.

Also, some of these methods are more involved than others, which might matter to you especially if you have trouble blowing away the cobwebs during early morning brews!

I brewed five cups of coffee end to end using the most common home brewers and assessed each on the following.

Preparation Time

Grinding your coffee fresh will always give you more aromatic and tastier results, so that’s step one. Heating water in a kettle is another prep step, at least for three of our manual brewing methods. The last part involves getting your brewer ready, setting up its filter system, and putting the coffee grounds in.

Actual Brewing Time

The moment hot water hits the coffee grounds, yummy coffee solubles begin to make their way into your cup or server. This entire process of extraction constitutes our actual brewing time.

Difficulty Level

Shorter does not always mean simpler! I decided to note down how simple or meticulous each brew method is. Some might prefer a “set and forget” approach, while others might enjoy a more involved ritual.

Drip Coffee Maker

This classic coffee brewer is a staple in almost every household. All the prep you need involves grinding your beans, filling the tank with water, and putting ground coffee into the filter.

Drip Coffeemaker Prep Time

Our drip coffee maker was ready to brew in under two minutes

This brewer takes the least effort to use. To begin brewing coffee, all you need to do is turn on the switch, wait for the coffee to drip into the pot, and serve!

Drip Coffeemaker Brew Time

And done brewing in three minutes, easy-peasy

French Press

As far as manual brewers go, the French press is popular due to its reusable filter and straightforward brewing approach. To prepare your brew, you need to grind your coffee, heat some water in a kettle, and place your coffee grounds in the carafe with the plunger removed.

French Press Prep Time

The French press was ready to brew in about ninety seconds

Brewing on a French press involves pouring water into your grounds, stirring, and… well, that’s almost it! Most of the four to six-minute brew time involves waiting for your coffee grounds to steep in the hot water. Once you’ve reached your target time, plunge the filter down and serve.

Pouring brewed coffee from french press

From steep to serve, it’ll take a minimum of five minutes on the French press

Pour Over

If you’re a coffee enthusiast, chances are you’ve heard of the pour-over technique. This method breaks down the auto drip coffee maker into a manual, controllable affair. Prep work involves grinding coffee, boiling water in a kettle, and wetting a paper filter placed in the brewer before adding the ground coffee.

Pourover _Prep Time

It took me three minutes to get my pour-over setup together

Of all the manual methods, the pour-over requires the most finesse. You have to pour gently and in stages to make the most out of the relatively short brew time.

Brewed Pourover Coffee

And another three minutes for the brew to finish

Moka Pot

The moka pot is another classic brewing device that makes a concentrated cup of coffee, similar to an espresso. In addition to grinding coffee, some assembly is required before you can brew.

To prepare a moka pot, fill the bottom chamber with water, add finely-ground coffee to the filter basket, screw on the top chamber, and place it on the stove.

Moka Pot Prep Time

Two and a half minutes and my moka pot was ready to go

The brew begins when you turn the stove on. Depending on your heat source and the size of your Moka pot, it may take a few minutes of waiting before the first drops of coffee appear on the top chamber. Manage the heat setting until the liquid stops flowing, and pour out the concentrated brew into a small cup to enjoy.

Pouring brewed coffee from Moka Pot into cup

My induction-capable moka pot took more than 6 minutes to brew a single serving

Aeropress

The Aeropress is a versatile little brewer. There are several ways to use one (check out our regular and inverted recipes here), but for this test, I opted to use the manufacturer’s recommended recipe.

Apart from grinding your beans and heating water in a kettle, some assembly is required. Affix the pre-wet filter and filter cap onto the brew chamber and place the whole thing on top of your cup. Pour the grinds into the chamber, and you’re ready to brew.

Aeropress Prep Time

Aeropress ready to brew in under two minutes!

Brewing is done in four simple steps: Pour in hot water, swirl or stir the wet coffee grounds, attach the plunger, and press down into your cup until the chamber is empty.

And ready to drink also under two minutes!

Summary and Conclusion

The chart below will tell you how much time and effort each brewing method requires, based on a one-cup serving.

Brew MethodPrep TimeBrew TimeTotal TimeDifficulty Level
Drip Coffeemaker2:003:005:00easiest

Pour Over3:003:006:00fairly involved
Moka Pot2:306:409:10most involved
Aeropress2:002:004:00simple
  • Drip Coffeemakers are by far the easiest to use. And if you’re just making coffee for yourself, you’ll be done in about five minutes. Expect the brew time to go up for larger servings.
  • The Aeropress stands out for being quick and easy, and clean-up is a breeze too! It can be challenging to brew coffee for a crowd though, so keep that in mind.
  • Despite a moka pot’s complexity and lengthy brew time, it’s the way to go if you want an espresso-like beverage without investing in a proper machine.

Some brew methods do take longer than others, and it’s important to pick the one that suits your lifestyle.
But time shouldn’t be the sole deciding factor in your brew. After all, the best coffee is the one you like. Try out these methods, and see for yourself which ones are worth putting the time and effort into!

Nitro Cold Brew With an Espresso Machine

I recently came across a trending Instagram Reel that claimed you could make a nitro cold brew just by using your espresso machine. Of course, I was immediately skeptical and had to give the video a watch to figure it out.

There were various opinions about the outcome in the comments, so I decided to go a step further and give it a try myself. While it’s not technically a nitro cold brew since there’s no nitrogen involved in the process, this hack supposedly gets you pretty close to the real thing.

Nitro Cold Brew With an Espresso Machine

Nitro Cold Brew in an Espresso Machine

In the video from @tannercolsoncoffee on Instagram, an idea that was credited to a Redditor named Tom V is shown by describing how to make a nitro cold brew drink by just using an espresso machine that has a steam wand.

Though this is technically called an Aerocano, since it’s quite literally a steamed iced Americano, it’s claimed that this method gives all the tasty effects of a nitro cold brew in a much quicker process.

The video instructs coffee lovers to first pull a double shot of espresso from their machine, making sure that it’s dialed in well. This ensures a delicious taste that will greatly impact the flavor of your drink creation.

Next, you’ll want to fill up a small carafe or pitcher with some ice cubes and a splash of water. Pour the espresso shots you pulled onto this mixture and you have a small iced americano. Using this and your steam wand, you’ll then inject air into it.

Since the steam slowly melts the ice that’s in the mixture, you then get a frothy and airy texture. The hot steam balances out the melting ice so that the drink still stays pretty cool throughout the process. After you’ve nicely frothed up your iced americano and the ice has finished melting, the drink is ready to go.

Making My Own Nitro Cold Brew Using an Espresso Machine

I was very curious to try this method of making a drink that resembles nitro cold brew myself. So I followed the steps listed in the Instagram video and ended up with my own Aerocano.

Aerocano Collage

I could see how it visually looked a lot like a nitro cold brew drink since the foamy head was definitely very similar. However, when it comes to the flavor of this beverage creation, it’s very much not like a nitro cold brew.

nitro cold brew

The steaming process does give the iced americano taste a much smoother mouthfeel, especially after it settles. There’s no doubting that this drink is still delicious and, if you’re looking for a slightly similar drink to the nitro cold brew that you can make at home without any special equipment besides a steam wand, then this is a super quick and tasty hack.

Wrapping Up

Overall, this was definitely a fun experiment to find and try. While you won’t get the special taste that you get from an actual nitro cold brew, you can still replicate the smoothness of one by crafting up your own Aerocano.

Infusing a bit of air into your iced americano through the use of a steam wand is a fast and easy way to elevate your coffee-making skills and home drink options.

Greek Frappe History

Originating in Greece, the frappé coffee has an intriguing history. In 1957, Dimitris Vakondios, while working for Nescafe, crafted this iced delight using instant coffee, cold water, and ice due to a lack of hot water (according to Wikipedia). The name “frappé,” borrowed from French, signifies a chilled drink, and over time, this beverage, once synonymous with Nescafé in Greece, has come to be popularly known as just “frappé.”

Greek Frappe vs. Frappuccino

The Greek frappe, originating in the 1950s in Greece, is a frothy, strong coffee made by shaking or blending instant coffee with water. In contrast, the Frappuccino is a Starbucks trademark, presenting as a creamy, sweet, milkshake-like drink made from blended coffee, milk, ice, and syrups. While the frappe is a social staple in Greek culture, the Frappuccino symbolizes modern coffee culture, especially associated with Starbucks.

Aspect Greek Frappe Frappuccino
Origin Greece, 1950s Starbucks
Preparation Shaken/blended instant coffee with water Blended coffee, milk, ice, and syrups
Texture & Taste Frothy, strong coffee Creamy, sweet, milkshake-like
Caffeine Content Varies by coffee amount Varies; some versions caffeine-free
Cultural Significance Social drink in Greece Modern coffee culture; Starbucks staple

Wrapping Up

You’re now a Starbucks skilled barista with our delicious frappe!

There are so many ways you can customize this delicious frozen drink to make it exactly the way you like.

You can also blend the drink or add crushed ice for a more milkshake-like consistency. Have fun with it and enjoy making it again and again!

Coconut Water Iced Americano

The Americano is a delicious way to experience espresso but in a more traditional coffee-like way. Espresso by itself is very bold and thick and can be way too much for some coffee drinkers.

But an Americano is simply espresso over water, creating a more coffee-like drink that still has the kick and flavor of espresso.

An Iced Americano is an espresso over ice, melting down the ice and creating an iced coffee-like drink. It is one of our favorite ways to enjoy espresso and is super simple to make!

You may have tried the combo of an Americano and Coca-Cola, or as we like to call it – “Americola.” Although maybe not for everyone, it is a favorite around here.

However, today we bring you something even more delicious and maybe not quite as “out there” as the Cola and Americano combo.

We present the Iced Coconut Water Americano!

Coconut Water Iced Americano

Presenting: Iced Coconut Water Americano

The combination of coconut water and espresso is truly delicious. This combination not only gives you a yummy coconut-flavored drink, but is sooooo refreshing and smooth compared to a traditional iced Americano.

Coconut water is a naturally derived drink from the coconut. It is filled with electrolytes like potassium, manganese, and sodium.

Its sweetness is derived from the naturally sweet coconut and has a very low sugar content and no artificial flavoring.

Coconut water is known for rehydrating, making it great for post-workouts or during mild illnesses to help keep your body hydrated.

This also makes it great for pairing with espresso, as espresso often can dehydrate you while drinking.

Because of its delicious flavor and texture, coconut water is a great way to mix up a regular favorite, an iced Americano.

Coconut Water Iced Americano recipe

What You’ll Need:

  • Serving glass
  • Ice
  • Coconut Water
  • Fresh Espresso Shot(s)
  • Creamer of Choice (optional)

Although coconut water might not be a staple in your pantry, it is very easy to find at a grocery store or even through retailers like Amazon.

Please note – coconut water and coconut milk ARE different things and will give very different results for an iced Americano.

Although coconut milk is also delicious and can make for a good coffee creamer, it is much thicker, sweeter, and chunky in comparison to coconut water. One can not really substitute for the other, but certainly try some coconut milk as an alternative to dairy creamers.

Dalgona Martini

Coffee is such a versatile beverage. You can serve it hot or iced, with add-ins or black. Thanks to its caffeine content, it puts an extra pep in your step on an early morning. And if you pair it with your favorite liquor, it makes a mean cocktail for your after-work wind-down session.

The espresso martini is a classic coffee cocktail, but despite its name, it’s not technically a martini. Martinis contain gin and vermouth; espresso martinis don’t have either. Instead, those consist of espresso, coffee liqueur, and vodka.

Don’t get us wrong; the traditional espresso martini is delicious. But sometimes, it’s fun to switch things up.

That’s where the Dalgona coffee martini comes in. With this drink, you still get all the boozy coffee goodness of an espresso martini. But there’s also a slightly different flavor profile and a layer of foam that’s fun to look at and consume.

Dalgona Martini

What Is Dalgona Coffee, and Why Is Everyone Making It?

Dalgona coffee has become quite popular in the States over the last few years. But the drink didn’t originate here. It hails from South Korea and gets its name from a sugar sponge candy enjoyed in the country.

So, how did Dalgona coffee spread across the nation? The same way any trend does: through TikTok! We and millions of others spent most of 2020’s COVID-19 quarantine scrolling the video-sharing app, seeing nothing but clips of people doing the Renegade dance, talking about Tiger King, and making cups of whipped coffee.

People started making Dalgona coffee just because everyone on TikTok was doing it. Besides, what else was there to do? It didn’t take long for us all to discover that the beverage was more than just a popular way to fill the time during a stay-at-home order; it’s tasty, too!

You need only three ingredients to make Dalgona coffee: instant coffee, hot water, and granulated sugar. Use a whisk or electric hand mixer to whip the ingredients into a fluffy foam, and that’s it, Dalgona coffee.

Serve it with the hot or cold milk of your choice. Or add it to a cocktail — like a coffee martini, for instance — for a more grown-up twist.

Make a Dalgona Coffee Martini

You’ll Need

  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon hot water
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 2 ounces coffee liqueur
  • 4 ounces vodka
  • ice cubes
  • cocktail shaker
  • small bowl or glass
  • martini glass
  • whisk or handheld milk frother

The Process

Step One

pouring syrup, vodka, and coffee liqueur into the tall glass

First, put ice cubes, an ounce of simple syrup, four ounces of vodka, and two ounces of coffee liqueur (we’re big Kahlua fans, but use whatever you like best — you can even make your own if you’re feeling adventurous!) into a cocktail shaker. Then, set that aside.

Step Two

adding coffee, sugar and water to the glass

It’s Dalgona time! Pour equal amounts of instant coffee, granulated sugar, and hot water into a small bowl or glass. Our recipe uses about a tablespoon of each ingredient, but feel free to adjust accordingly.

Use a whisk or handheld milk frother  to stir the sweet instant coffee mixture until it’s fluffy. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture looks larger and medium to stiff peaks form.

Then, set your freshly made Dalgona coffee aside.

Step Three

Pour the liquid into a cocktail glass and top with Dalgona coffee

Grab your cocktail shaker and shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds or until its contents are well-combined and cold.

Strain the liquid into a martini glass (or some other equally as fun serving glass). Then, scoop your foamy whipped coffee on top.

Enjoy!

How To Make

…Simple Syrup

If you make a lot of cocktails, your bar is probably already stocked with a bottle or two of simple syrup. But if you’re running low on it, it isn’t hard to replenish your stock with a homemade batch of the stuff.

Just bring equal parts white sugar and water to a boil in a medium saucepan before letting the mixture simmer for a minute or two.

Then, remove it from the heat, let it cool, and there you have it — simple syrup to use in your favorite cocktail or coffee recipes.

…Coffee Liqueur

If you don’t think Kahlua, Tia Maria, or St. George NOLA’s coffee liqueur will cut it, make your own version of the alcoholic coffee drink.

Combine an equal amount of used coffee grounds and sugar in a mason jar and leave the mixture to sit for around 24 hours.

Then, stir equal parts of freshly brewed joe and vodka into the container. Strain out the grit, and you’re all done.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Brown Sugar for Dalgona Coffee?

Yes! You can use any granulated sugar, from white to brown to coconut.

Brown sugar adds a rich, caramel-like sweetness to the coffee fluff while giving it a darker, more golden hue than something made with plain white sugar.

Can I Make Dalgona Coffee With Regular Coffee?

Anyone who isn’t an instant coffee lover might be put off by Dalgona coffee since most recipes call for a tablespoon or two of the just-add-water joe.

Fortunately for those folks, instant coffee isn’t a necessity. Whipping brewed drip coffee or espresso with sugar creates a slightly less firm version of the foamy, caffeinated treat.

What Is Dalgona in English?

You probably already guessed that “Dalgona” isn’t an English word. It’s Korean and roughly translates to “it’s sweet.” That name’s pretty accurate if you ask us.

We love making tasty recipes here at Roasty, especially ones you can easily make in the comfort of your home – If you have an espresso machine at home, we have so many great Iced Latte recipes you can try without needing to steam your milk!

Cherry-vanilla is a classic flavor combo that goes way back. From vanilla ice cream topped with candied cherries to different soda varieties sporting the flavor duo – it is well beloved.

So naturally it only makes sense to turn it into a latte!

What You’ll Need

Make It Your Own

Firstly, let’s review the best options for you and explore the use of substitutions to make this drink your own.

Tart cherries are great anti-inflammatory fruit, helping soothe aches and pains in the body. When looking for tart cherry juice, we highly recommend finding one with little to no added sugars. This will give you the best flavor and full health benefits of these types of cherries.

Both the vanilla and maple syrup portions of this recipe are a bit more common, especially if you are a big enthusiast of making your own drinks at home. Torani Vanilla Syrup is made for coffee drinks and is delicious, plus the pump makes it easier to get the same taste every time!

The best type of maple syrup is fresh from the trees, rather than a corn syrup-based recipe. You can often find real maple syrup in grocery stores, but can also order online. Not only does it add sweetness to your drink, but also adds that delicious maple flavor, which you won’t get quite the same with from an artificial maple syrup.

You can use whatever creamer base you like best – whether whole milk, almond milk, or half & half, do what you like best! If using alternative milk, we suggest using an unsweetened and unflavored type to get the best flavors from the cherry, vanilla, and maple.

Lastly, if you don’t have fresh espresso on hand but are still curious to try this drink, you can always substitute it for a strongly made cold brew or use instant espresso instead. But fresh certainly is best in this case.

We are huge fans of chocolate and coffee, and adding mint into that mix just seems natural. From the classic Peppermint Mocha Latte to the Peppermint Mocha Cold Brew, we love this duo!

So of course it seems only perfect to recreate one of the best chocolate mint candies out there – the Peppermint Patty!

With less emphasis on the chocolate and more on the creamy mint filling, we wanted to make a latte that would capture the immaculate taste of this candy and leave you cooled and refreshed in the same way.

It’s an easy drink to make and only takes a few ingredients that are common pantry staples. If you don’t have an at-home espresso brewer, don’t worry. We have all the best recommendations for substitutions and making this drink your own.

peppermint patty iced latte

What You’ll Need

  • Fresh espresso
  • Peppermint extract
  • Vanilla syrup
  • Creamer of choice
  • Ice
  • Milk frother
  • 2 Serving glasses

These ingredients are simple and easy to find at most grocery stores. Hershy’s chocolate sauce is a great option, but you can always use other types of chocolate sauce such as Ghirardelli’s.

McCormicks Peppermint Extract is great quality for getting that perfect peppermint flavor, but if you like your drinks extra sweet, you could try a peppermint syrup that has added sugar.

Adding vanilla syrup helps bring out the peppermint flavor even more, as well as adding some additional sweetness. You can substitute vanilla extract if you like your drinks less sweet.

We always suggest using your preferred dairy base – whether that’s an alternative milk like almond or oat, or you like a rich and creamy breve latte, the choice is yours! If you are using an alternative milk, we highly suggest using one without a flavor or added sweetener.

Lastly, you really can’t beat fresh espresso that is made directly from fresh grinds. If you have an AeroPress, that makes for a good alternative espresso type that works well and with similar flavoring. In a pinch, instant espresso or a highly concentrated cold brew can work too.

Make It Your Own!

Making matcha at home is really quite simple, thanks to the popularity of the drink and how easy it is to find good quality matcha powder in almost any major supermarket!

But matcha powder really is just green tea, so if that’s all you have at home, it’ll work too! Simply steep your tea beforehand until the brew is strong, and then add from there!

We always recommend using your own choice of milk – whether that’s almond milk, oat, or whole milk. If you don’t have honey for sweetening your matcha, you can try sweetened milk or simply add your favorite sweetener of choice.

Strawberry syrup is easy to find at most major supermarkets. But if you don’t have any on hand, try mashing up some fresh strawberries at the bottom of your serving jar and add a bit of sugar for a subtle sweetness and to further bring out the juices.

A scoop of strawberry jelly or jam will also do the trick, but you’ll want to thoroughly mix it in to avoid jelly clumps.

How To Make

This drink has a few preparation steps but is oh-so-yummy and easy. Plus, there’s no brewing time, which makes it super quick!

Step One

glass with strawberry slices and ice

Start by adding freeze-dried or fresh strawberry slices to the sides of your serving glass and then fill it with ice.

Step Two

adding milk to a glass with strawberry slices and ice

In a separate glass, froth your creamer of choice until light and fluffy, and then pour it into your serving glass.

Note – You are not steaming your milk, as that will heat the milk up and this is an iced drink.

Step Three

adding strawberry syrup to a glass with strawberry slices, milk and ice

Add 1-2 Teaspoons of strawberry syrup, drizzling around the sides of your serving glass and over the ice.

Note – If you’re using fresh, crushed strawberries with sugar in place of syrup, you’ll want to do this step before adding ice.

Step Four

adding matcha into a glass with strawberry slices, milk and ice

Prepare your matcha in a separate dish, thoroughly mixing to avoid powder clumps. You will only want about 1/4 of a cup of matcha with about a tablespoon of honey mixed into it. Add the matcha and honey mixture to your serving glass, over the milk and ice.

Step Five

Stir and top with more strawberry syrup if desired. Enjoy!

Substitutions You Can Use

Whether you are dairy free or a die-hard whole milk drinker, this Iced Caramel Frappuccino can be made with any milk base of your choosing. If using an alternative milk, we suggest using one that isn’t sweetened unless you like your Frappuccino extra sweet!

For the caramel sauce, we always prefer Ghirardelli Caramel Sauce as it’s made for coffee drinks and mixes well into drinks. However, any caramel sauce of your preference can be used.

On Sale

Instant espresso is different than instant coffee, but if that is all you have on hand, it certainly can work. Fresh espresso also works, but you will want to add additional ice to help cool it down.

Frappuccinos are generally considered ice-blended drinks, but if you don’t have a blender on hand but are curious to try, you can certainly create this as an iced drink and skip the blending.

Earth Day Matcha Latte

Here at Roasty, we believe every day should be Earth Day. After all, this is our home — shouldn’t we always appreciate it? However, April 22 is the official calendar date for celebrating our planet and supporting environmental protection efforts.

This Earth Day, get out of the house and get involved by organizing a litter pickup in the neighborhood or local park, planting a tree, or creating a compost pile. Then, reward yourself with an icy and refreshing themed matcha latte. It’s perfect for sipping not just on Earth Day but every other spring day after, too.

Earth Day Matcha Latte

What’s Earth Day Matcha?

The Earth Day matcha latte consists of a few ingredients: matcha green tea, butterfly pea flower tea, and milk of your choice, usually made foamy by a milk frother if you’re serving it cold or a steamer if your latte will be served hot.

The drink’s name comes from its one-of-a-kind appearance. When the bright blue- and green-colored teas swirl around in your cup with the milk, it looks a bit like Earth. The matcha represents land, the butterfly pea flower tea is the ocean, and the milk is the cloud cover.

So, when you make this tea latte, don’t forget to serve it in a clear cup and take a gorgeous photo of the colorful treat before you slurp it down.

Before sharing the recipe, let’s look more closely at the two types of tea involved.

What Is Matcha?

At this point, matcha green tea is probably no stranger to you, as the brightly-hued beverage has been trendy in the coffee and tea world for a few years now. But if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of meeting matcha, allow us to introduce you.

China-originated matcha powder comes from grinding high-grade, specially-grown green tea leaves. So, you can’t steep it in hot water as you would with loose-leaf tea. Instead, you whisk the powder into hot water until it forms a vibrant-colored, frothy mixture.

Matcha has a distinctive earthy taste and aroma, but those aren’t its only traits. It’s also packed with some rather impressive benefits, including:

  • High antioxidant content. Matcha has plenty of compounds called catechins that act as natural antioxidants. These catechins stabilize harmful free radicals (compounds that damage cells or lead to chronic disease).
  • Brain-boosting properties. According to Healthline, researchers found that several components of matcha can elevate brain function. The green tea made attention span, reaction time, and memory better. It also has L-theanine, which promotes alertness and prevents caffeine crashes — that’s extra good news since matcha contains caffeine.
  • Cancer-fighting or preventing elements (at least, according to test tube and animal studies.) One of the catechins found in matcha is called epigallocatechin-3-gallate. But that’s a mouthful, so we’ll call it by its abbreviated name, EGCG. EGCG has anti-cancer properties and effectively kills prostate, skin, lung, and liver cancer cells. Researchers obtained this info via test tube and animal studies; we’re still not 100 percent sure how these results translate to humans.
  • Heart health promotion. Some studies have shown that sipping green tea, like matcha, can lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Of course, matcha isn’t some magical beverage guaranteeing heart health; anyone hoping to see results has to combine it with a well-rounded diet and healthy lifestyle.

What Is Butterfly Pea Flower?

Butterfly pea flower tea (a.k.a. blue tea) is a caffeine-free herbal tea made by steeping the Clitoria ternatea, or butterfly pea flower.

You’re most likely to find butterfly pea flowers and tea made from it in South East Asian countries, but in recent years, more non-natives have become exposed to the plant and beverage.

The butterfly pea flower’s most noticeable attribute is its breathtaking blue hue. But it’s more than just a pretty face. South East Asian communities have used the plant for its health benefits and beautifying properties for centuries.

So, why is this plant so valuable for Ayurvedic medicine? Because:

  • It’s rich in ternatins. Ternatins are antioxidant compounds associated with inflammation alleviation and preventing cancerous cells’ growth. Additionally, butterfly pea flower plants contain other anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, and immune-boosting antioxidants.
  • It gives the brain a boost. This plant has a reputation for boosting brain power and has been used to treat anxiety, depression, ADHD, and stress for years. Butterfly pea flower tea’s brain-boosting power is courtesy of the acetylcholine it contains; this compound is essential for brain health.
  • It has beauty benefits. Everyone wants to feel beautiful, and butterfly pea flowers can help. The topical application of butterfly pea flower can increase skin hydration and treat itchiness, redness, or irritation. It can also aid in hair growth, thanks to its anthocyanin. Anthocyanin increases blood flow to the scalp, and increased blood flow strengthens hair follicles and encourages new hair growth.

Those are but a few of the butterfly pea flower’s benefits. We could go on, but we won’t. Instead, we’ll say this: this is one remarkable plant.

Make the Earth Day Matcha Latte at Home

You’ll Need

Note: You’ll notice we didn’t provide exact ingredient measurements. That was intentional. This drink is best when prepared according to your unique preferences, so add as much or as little of each ingredient as you’d like.

  • ice cubes
  • milk or creamer of your choice
  • butterfly pea flower tea
  • matcha tea
  • honey or agave syrup
  • vanilla extract or vanilla-flavored simple syrup (optional)

The Process

Step One

First, brew the butterfly pea flower tea. For best results, follow the instructions printed on the product’s label and be sure you’re steeping it in hot but not boiling water.

You may need to research to decide what product you’ll like best. As you dig deeper into brands, look into the different kinds of this tea, too. There are butterfly pea flower powder and loose-leaf options for you to choose from, so you’ll need to keep the pros and cons of each in mind as you search for something to buy.

Once you’ve brewed your tea, set it aside — we’ll come back to it in a moment, but there are other steps to make it through first.

Step Two

Next, pour ice and your favorite milk or creamer into a serving glass. We used almond milk, but it doesn’t matter — plant milk or plant milk-based creamers make a latte creamy just as well as dairy products. So, feel free to go either route.

pouring ice and milk into a glass

Step Three

It’s matcha time! Prepare the tea according to the instructions printed on the product label. Then, if your sweet tooth demands, stir honey or agave syrup into the matcha. You can even add flavors here, too, like vanilla.

pouring Butterfly pea flower tea into a glass with ice and milk

Step Four

Pour the butterfly pea flower and matcha shots over the milk and watch the colors swirl together. It almost looks too pretty to drink. But trust us — you’ll want to experience these flavors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Best Milk for a Matcha Latte?

You can pour whatever milk or non-dairy milk alternative you like into your matcha latte. However, we like mixing matcha with coconut or oat milk best.

Since oat milk doesn’t have a particularly overpowering taste, it lets matcha’s unique flavor profile shine while giving it a nice creamy texture. On the other hand, coconut milk is a little harder to find. However, like oat milk, the non-dairy milk alternative makes matcha lattes creamy, and its taste complements matcha’s well.

Is Matcha Stronger Than Coffee?

First, when we use the word “stronger” here, we’re talking about caffeine level, not flavor.

That said, matcha is not as strong as coffee. The average cup of joe contains between 100 and 140 milligrams of caffeine. Matcha provides a less intense energy boost in comparison, as it usually has around 70 milligrams of caffeine per eight-ounce cup.

However, the opposite is true if you’re talking about decaffeinated coffee. A cup of decaffeinated coffee usually has two to 15 grams of caffeine. So, compared to that, matcha green tea generates a more energizing buzz.

Is It OK To Drink Matcha Every Day?

Yes, you can have matcha daily. But, as with anything, consume it in moderation. Try not to have more than one or two cups per day to avoid potentially being affected by any of the green tea’s negative side effects.

Enjoy Your Latte!

If you’re desperate for a spin on the traditional matcha latte, this could be the drink you’re searching for. It tastes delicious, and that it’s so pretty is the icing on the cake!
