Meet the Moccamaster
Technivorm Moccamaster is a master in brewing. They’ve been making essential models of coffee makers by hand since 1968. They’re known for precise engineering and unique designs and back their machines with a 5-year warranty and lifetime repairs.
The Technivorm Moccamaster meets the Golden Cup Standard developed by the Speciality Coffee Association of America. In addition, the Moccamaster KB excels in the four T’s of coffee brewing: temperature, time, turbulence, and total dissolved solids. This certification only comes after rigorous quality control and laboratory testing.
The Moccamaster produces a variety of drip coffee brewers now, including the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV, an automatic drip machine, and several options with a thermal carafe.
But does that mean it makes perfect cups of coffee? Keep reading this Technivorm Moccamaster review to determine if the KB model is suitable for you.
Basic Specs
The Technivorm Moccamaster KB weighs 6 pounds and measures 14″ x 12.75″ x 6.5″. It uses 1475 watts of power and holds 40 ounces of water.
This machine is a manual drip coffee maker intended to brew a full pot of coffee. The sleek design and brushed silver exterior give it a very modern feel, despite not having changed a lot since the earliest model.
The removable brew basket and lids contain BPA-free plastic. In addition, this model includes a 10-cup capacity glass carafe with a high-quality plastic handle.
Every glass carafe model includes a hot plate with an independent heating element that aims to keep your coffee at the perfect brewing temperature long after it finishes brewing. You’ll also get an adorable coffee scoop to measure your favorite coffee grounds and a couple of paper coffee filters for the filter basket.
This manual drip brewer promises a hands-on approach to the brewing process. You can stop the flow of coffee entirely, open the brew basket minutes into brewing, and correct any uneven extraction.
There are quite a few features that make this the perfect drip coffee maker.
Fast Brewing Time
This machine completes the entire brewing process in four to six minutes. I put this to the test, and the brewing cycle took just over five minutes for a whole carafe of outstanding coffee at the perfect brew temperature.
Of course, you can slow this down with the manual drip stop. Switching to a slower drip allows the water to saturate the ground beans thoroughly and extract more coffee flavor. So whether you’re in a rush or want a pour-over quality brew, the Technivorm Moccamaster KB has you covered.
Manual Drip-Stop
I have only used traditional drip coffee makers, and I was excited to try the manual drip-stop. I won’t lie. I often questioned the benefit of a manual drip over an automatic drip machine.
Then I brewed a pot. Controlling the flow with the manual drip-stop lets me stop the brewing process altogether, open the brew basket, and ensure that every ground has been thoroughly saturated. It’s a lot like making a careful pour-over brew in your own Technivorm Moccamaster KB.
It also lets me slow the brewing systems down to have a single cup of brew without overflowing. This is a key feature for me because I like to drink my coffee one cup at a time. If it brews 20 ounces in 2-3 minutes, imagine how fast 12 ounces brew. Controlling the brew time with the manual drip-stop makes single cups possible.
Optimum Coffee Brewing Temperature
The Technivorm Moccamaster KB includes a copper heating element that rapidly heats the water to the optimal brewing temperature of 196°F – 205°F. The auto-off feature kicks in as soon as the water reservoir is empty. Trust me. The ideal brewing temperature matters when making the best cup of brew.
Brewing at the ideal temperature ensures that there are fewer remnants from brews. Despite the speed of the brew cycle, the Moccamaster provides a gentle extraction process at the proper heat range and water temperature, so you’ll enjoy a delicious cup every time.
Independent Heating Element
All glass carafe models include a hotplate with an independent heating element. A simple switch lets you maintain the temperature between 175°F – 185°F. After 100 minutes, the manual power switch and hotplate will automatically shut off.
Showerhead Design
The Technivorm Moccamaster KB is not a typical drip coffee maker. Instead, the nine-hole showerhead design allows water to thoroughly saturate the pre-ground coffee beans during the brewing process by spraying the hot water evenly in the brew basket instead of using the traditional water-gun effect.
Five-Year Warranty
Every Technivorm Moccamaster KB is hand-built carefully in the Netherlands and comes with a five-year warranty. Even better, they’ll repair any brewer for life! I consider this a bonus when purchasing a coffee machine because I brew a lot of coffee.
The Drawbacks
Nothing is ever perfect, and this includes the Technivorm Moccamaster KB, especially if you’re looking for specific features.
No Programmable Features
This machine does not have any programmable features. If you’re like me, you might want to program your coffee maker to start the quiet brewing process while you’re still asleep. Unfortunately, the Technivorm Moccamaster KB does not allow you to do this.
Water Reservoir Isn’t Removable
The water reservoir is not removable, which means you can’t take it over to your sink to fill it with water. Of course, you can keep a pitcher handy or use the glass carafe to refill the reservoir.
Very Hot Elements
Of course, I expect the hotplate and coffee to be hot, but when lifting the glass carafe of coffee off the hotplate, I put my hand on the nine-hole showerhead, and yikes! However, this drawback is very easy to avoid.
Zero Bells and Whistles
The Technivorm Moccamaster KB makes coffee. Delicious, quality coffee, but with no special features. So if you’re looking for an espresso machine or a built-in grinder, this is not the machine for you. The Technivorm Moccamaster KB will disappoint if you hope to have accessories, attachments, bells, and whistles.
But if you’re looking for high-quality filter coffee makers, you may want to check out the Technivorm Moccamaster line.
Should You Try It?
A Technivorm Moccamaster is an investment in your morning routine, makes an exceptional cup of coffee, and offers you a hands-on experience in the brewing method. It is a quality product that produces quality brews.
But it is one of the highest-priced drip coffee makers on the market. If you’re looking for something more affordable, I recommend checking out this list of the best drip coffee makers. The OXO 9-cup Coffee Maker with thermal carafe features the same showerhead design and copper heating elements but includes a stainless steel carafe. It is also fully programmable. I’ve owned one for almost five years and can attest firsthand to the quality coffee it makes.
