Which of Kalita’s brewers deserves a spot on your countertop?

The Kalita 102 and the Wave are pour-over drippers from the renowned Japanese coffee manufacturer. To cut to the chase — both are solid, and both make great coffee. However, both have features and quirks that might sway your decision towards one or the other.

I’ve used these models at home and in a cafe for many years, so I’m here to share my two cents. Read on for a pour-over brewer showdown!

Kalita 102 vs Kalita Wave

Key Takeaways

  • The Kalita 102 is an entry-level, wedge-shaped pour-over dripper that’s affordable and user-friendly, using readily available #2 filters, ideal for beginners.
  • The Kalita Wave 185 boasts superior build quality and finishes, as well as consistent brews with its flat-bottom design, but comes with a higher cost and harder-to-find proprietary filters.
  • Both models can brew 2-4 cups, and while they offer different aesthetic and practical experiences, each ensures a quality pour-over coffee with similar results in the cup

Demystifying Pour-Over Drippers

What, you’ve never done a pour-over in your life? Well, it just happens to be a fantastic way to make a tasty cup of brewed coffee. This technique involves carefully pouring hot water over coffee grounds placed in a filter nestled inside the brewer.

This manual process allows you to tailor your brew precisely to your preferences, from the temperature of the hot water to the way you pour it. Things can certainly get complicated, but we’ve got you covered with our full guide here. Or you can stick to a simple recipe!

However you want to approach it, the core of this brew method is the venerable pour-over dripper. These come in many shapes, sizes, and finishes. They also brew quite differently, depending on the construction of the brew path. Here are a few types:

Wedge-Shaped

As the name suggests, this type of pour-over dripper looks like a wedge with the edge cut off. It looks a bit like the brew basket of an auto-drip coffeemaker and may even use compatible filters.

These are usually finished with small drain holes (anywhere from one to three) located centrally along the brewer’s narrow inside base. The Kalita 102 is a great example of a wedge-shaped dripper.

Kalita 102 Multiple

Flat-Bottom

Flat-bottom drippers are similar in concept to wedge-shaped ones and resemble a cone with the pointy tip cut off. ‘Flats’ also use small drain holes like the 102, but the more symmetrical shape helps promote even and consistent brews.

One issue with this shape is that the paper filters are a bit specialized and may be harder to find. The Kalita Wave is an example of a flat-bottom dripper.

Kalita Wave December

Conical

Conical types swap out those tiny drain holes for a larger singular opening. Brewers like these are more efficient at brewing due to the faster drain time, but you might need a special goose-neck kettle to slow down the water flow.

Conical brewers use filters similar to wedge-shaped ones, except with the pointy tip intact. One of the most popular brewers using this construction style is the Hario V60.

Hario V60 Top

Kalita 102 Coffee Dripper

If you’re just getting your feet wet with pour-over brewing, few drippers are as straightforward as the Kalita 102. This Kalita is a great pick for the budding barista who wants to add some pizzazz to their coffee-making routine.

The model number means we’re looking at the 2-cup model, which can brew 2 to 4 small Japanese-sized cups of coffee. There are the smaller 101 and the larger 103 and 104 models, but I’d say the 102 is the “Goldilocks zone” of the lot. Kalita seems to think so too — it’s the size that’s available in the widest variety of materials and colors.

The brewer’s wedge-shaped design features tiny raised ridges on the inner walls that give the paper filter a bit of lift during the brew. And speaking of those, this dripper uses the standard #2 paper filter, like you’d use for small auto-drip machines.

Kalita 102 Top

Things We Like

  • Inexpensive and well-made, from a reputable manufacturer
  • Available in multiple colors, material finishes, and sizes
  • Filters are affordable and easy-to-find

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Your pouring game has to be on point
  • The ceramic model is quite heavy — watch those cups!
  • How the handle of the (expensive) copper variant gets uncomfortably hot when brewing

Kalita Wave 185 Coffee Dripper

The Wave costs about two to three times more than the Kalita 102, depending on the model. And what do we get for the price premium?

For starters: a flat-bottom affair that mimics the brewing characteristics of an ideal “flat bed” extraction. The dripper’s shape and filter work together to promote evenness and consistency throughout the brewing process. Now who doesn’t like a great cuppa with minimal fuss?

The Wave also features improvements in build quality across all models. Insulated wood-tone handles, removable bases for the glass models, and at least three Special Edition material finishes mean something good-looking and functional on your brew bar.

But with unique attributes comes a small price to pay: the filters. Kalita sells proprietary Wave filters that are a bit hard to find in regular stores. Amazon has some off-brand options, but they just don’t work as well as the Kalitas.

Kalita Wave Top

Things We Like

  • Even and consistent brews thanks to the flat bottom construction
  • Great build quality and material design

Things We Didn’t Like

  • Confusing model selection
  • Filters are pricier and harder to find
  • Lack of an inexpensive plastic variant

Similarities Between The Kalita 102 And Wave

Brew Volume

The Kalita 102 and Wave 185 are both 2-4 cup brewers. Expect to make about 16 ounces of brewed coffee in one go. This is perfect for two normal-sized cups, or perhaps a large insulated tumbler.

Brewing Process

The Kalita Wave 185’s flat bottom should ideally give you an advantage in consistent brews. But in practice, I find that both brewers make very similar cups of coffee.

Both the 102 and the Wave have three small-sized drain holes, the latter being a smidge tinier. However, the design of the proprietary Wave filters increases water flow, leading to near-equal brew times between the two brewers.

So despite the difference in shape and filter, you can expect to use your Wave brew recipes for the 102, and vice-versa. Just remember that your grinder’s setting between drippers can vary!

Differences Between the Kalita 102 and Wave

Filter Flexibility

While Kalita does distribute their filter paper for the 102, just about any #2-size paper filter should work. Suitable brands you might find in your nearby Walmart or Costco are Great Value, Melitta, and Brew Rite. In a pinch, you can also use a larger filter size (like a #4) without much detriment to your brew.

The same isn’t true for the Kalita Wave 185. While you can creatively fold any filter to “fit”, you need the brand’s proprietary Wave filters, or at least a good third-party alternative to take advantage of its special brewing dynamics. The smaller 155 model also uses more narrow filters that don’t fit its bigger sibling.

Kalita 102 185 Filters

Size Alternatives

If two cups equal too much caffeine, you can opt for the Kalita 185’s smaller 155 sibling. That’s about it.

On the other hand, the Kalita 102 has one smaller size variant (the 101), and two larger size variants (103 and 104), allowing you to do an XL-sized pour-over if you wanted! The biggest size tops up at 12 cups of coffee or about 50 ounces.

In a sensible move, the two largest sizes only come in lightweight polycarbonate plastic.

Consistency Across Variants

If you’ve seen a Kalita 102, you’ve seen them all. The Kalita Wave, on the other hand, has small differences in construction depending on the material variant. Here are a few ones I noticed on the different Waves I’ve used:

  • The stainless steel model has a narrow grip insulated in plastic
  • The Tsubame models use a bent wire grip as a heat-proof holder
  • The Tsubame models have a slightly different base shape, which makes them drain a bit faster than the standard steel variant
  • The bottom ridges on the porcelain and glass variant are more pronounced than those of the stainless steel model
  • The glass model has a removable plastic base

Which One Should You Get?

Before you splurge for either of these, take a peep at our comprehensive brewer guide to see if the pour-over lifestyle is for you.

For entry-level seekers, it’s hard to make a case against the Kalita 102. It’s affordable, looks classy, and the filters are incredibly easy to find. The plastic version especially is a lot of brewer for very little money.

If you’re up for something unique and a bit more premium (filter fuss included), the Kalita Wave 185 will surely jazz up the joint thanks to its wider range of finishes and special models. The cherry on top? Consistent brews cup after cup.

Grind Coffee for a French Press

Grinding coffee for a French press is probably the most important step in creating a world-beating cup of coffee that is brimming with flavor.

The French press, also known as a coffee press (or cafetiere if you’re in the UK), is a beloved brewing method for its simplicity and ability to produce a full-bodied coffee.

Unlike other brewing methods that use finer ground coffee, the French press requires a coarser grind of coffee beans due to the mesh filter system.

The larger grind size ensures an optimal extraction rate while reducing the chances of fine coffee particles slipping through the mesh and causing sediment in your cup.

A quality burr grinder with a coarse setting helps achieve the right grind size, adding to the body and flavor of the coffee.

The years of trial and error when brewing French press have guided me to appreciate the importance of the coffee-to-water ratio, the freshness of the coffee beans, and the quest to find the perfect cup of coffee.

So let’s dive into some of the importance of grinding coffee for a French Press.

Grind Coffee for a French Press

French Press 101 and the Best Coffee

In my experience with brewing methods, the French press is unique in its simplicity and the rich, full-bodied coffee it produces. Paying attention to the grind size of your coffee beans is crucial to mastering this technique.

What Is a French Press and How It Works

The French press consists of a cylindrical glass or stainless steel container paired with a metal or plastic plunger and a built-in (usually mesh-like) filter screen and is a beloved tool for making coffee. To brew coffee, I add coarse grounds into the press, pour hot water over them, stir briefly, and then let them steep for about four minutes before pressing down the plunger. This process separates the grounds from the liquid, leaving me with a delicious cup of French press coffee.

The Importance of Grind Size in French Press Coffee

The grind size is pivotal for a French press because it directly influences extraction. Coarser grinds are the ideal grind size for a French press as they provide the right balance of flavor extraction without passing through the filter and making the coffee gritty. A fine grind risks over-extraction and bitterness, while a grind that’s too coarse might leave you with an underwhelming, weak cup and a sour taste.

The Kind of Coffee That’s Ideal for a French Press

I prefer a darker roast for my French press because it delivers a strong, bold flavor that’s well-suited to this extraction method. Although I might add that I would always opt for specialty coffee from your local coffee roaster.

Grinding Coffee for a French Press

When making French press coffee, the grind size and quality are as important as the coffee beans I’d select. Achieving the right coarseness is crucial for the ideal extraction and flavor.

Explanation of Why You Need To Grind Coffee Beans Specifically for a French Press

When brewing with a French press, the coffee grounds steep directly in hot water, and the liquid is separated from the grounds by a metal mesh filter.

If the grind is too fine, I’ll find coffee fines, small particles, slipping through the filter and into my cup, making the coffee muddy and possibly too bitter. A coarse grind, on the other hand, ensures that the coffee is evenly extracted and the mesh can do its job properly, allowing me to enjoy a clear, full-flavored brew without the grit.

How To Grind Coffee Beans for a French Press and Set a Coffee Grinder

Before grinding the beans for my French press, I ensure my coffee grinder is clean and set to the correct coarseness level. Here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

  1. Selecting the Grinder: Always use a burr grinder because it provides a more consistent grind compared to a blade grinder. Burr grinders allow for precise adjustments and result in fewer fines. Additionally, they don’t blend the coffee like a blade.
  2. Adjusting the Grind Setting: Essentially, the grounds should resemble sea salt in texture.
  3. Grinding the Beans: Place the coffee beans in the grinder, set the desired level of coarseness, and grind. The goal is a uniform grind size that is roughly the same throughout.
  4. Measuring the Coffee: A general guideline is to use a 1:12 coffee-to-water ratio. So for every 1 gram of coffee, I use about 12 grams of water.

It is worth investing in a good manual grinder or a high-quality electric burr grinder to achieve the perfect coarse grind. By keeping these points in mind, I can consistently produce delicious French press coffee at home.

The Ideal Grind Size for a French Press

The key to making outstanding French press coffee lies in using a coarse grind size that resembles sea salt (but also not the coarsest on some grinders which may be a percolator grind). This allows for optimal extraction without the risk of over-extraction or under-extraction, creating a rich and full-bodied brew.

When preparing French press coffee, the grind size should not be fine but rather range between medium-coarse to coarse. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Fine: Likely to slip through the press filter, leading to bitter coffee.
  • Medium Grind: Can sometimes work, but often leads to inconsistent extraction.
  • Medium-Coarse: Generally considered acceptable, though it can still produce some silt.
  • Coarse: Ideal size, creating optimal resistance for the plunger and limiting sediment.

How to Determine the Dose of Coffee To Grind for a French Press

In my experience, nailing the right amount of coffee to grind for a French Press is essential for a perfect brew. I’ll be walking you through this straightforward process, emphasizing precise measurements for different capacities to address every coffee lover’s needs.

Guidelines for How Much Coffee To Grind for a French Press

To start, I always stick to the recommended coffee-to-water ratio of 1:12 to 1:16, which translates to about 1 gram of coffee for every 12 to 16 grams of water. Let’s break down what this looks like for different French press sizes:

  • 8 Cup French Press: For this common size, which corresponds to 34 oz, I find that using 60-70 grams of coarse coffee grounds achieves a bold and rich flavor.
  • 16 Oz French Press: Half the size of the 8-cup, so I use around 30-35 grams of coffee.
  • 32 Oz French Press: This one’s double the size of the 16 oz, necessitating 65-70 grams of coffee to maintain the balance.
  • 1 Cup French Press: Typically, a single cup is 4 oz, so I’d opt for approximately 8-9 grams of coffee.

In each case, ensure the grind size is coarse, resembling sea salt, to prevent over-extraction and bitterness. The Baratza Encore is my go-to grinder, set around 28 to 32 for the perfect coarse coffee grounds.

As for brew time, I let my grounds steep for about 4 minutes, which I find to be the sweet spot for full flavor extraction without bitterness. Maintaining a water temperature of about 195°F to 205°F is also crucial because too hot water can cause over-extraction, while too cool may under-extract, leading to a weaker brew.

Remember, all these suggestions may vary slightly per your taste preference, but they offer a solid foundation for your French press coffee adventures.

The Best Coffee Beans for Your French Press

When I think about making the perfect cup of coffee in a French Press, the choice of coffee beans is paramount. Not only does it influence the flavor and oils that are extracted during the brewing process, but it also affects the bloom and overall freshness of the coffee.

In my experience, dark roast coffee beans are usually the most suitable for a French Press. The reason is quite simple: a French Press does a great job at allowing the rich, bold flavors and oils of dark roasted beans to shine through. The natural oils released during the brew contribute to a full-bodied and complex cup of coffee.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the types of beans I find work best:

  • Single-origin beans: These offer unique characteristics from their specific region which can make your morning cup a true adventure in taste.
  • Blend of beans: A blend can balance different flavors and ensure a rich, harmonious cup.

When selecting coffee beans for your French Press, freshness and specialty are key to achieving that perfect cup.

I always order coffee online or pick up a bag from a nearby coffee roaster and grind the coffee beans right before brewing, as this will also maximize the bloom while preserving the coveted flavors and aromas.

Whole Beans or Ground Coffee in a French Press?

Now, I can’t emphasize this enough: grinding your own whole-bean coffee just before brewing makes a world of difference! It allows me to control the grind size, which is crucial for a French Press. Aim for a coarse grind to prevent over-extraction and to ensure the final cup isn’t filled with sediment, which isn’t pleasant.

  • Whole bean coffee: Buy it fresh and grind just before brewing.
  • Pre-ground coffee: If it’s your only option, make sure it’s a coarse grind meant for French Press and as fresh as possible.

Brewing with a French Press using ground coffee that’s too fine can result in a bitter cup, as fine grounds extract faster and can over-extract if they stay in contact with water too long. So if you’re purchasing pre-ground coffee, make sure the label specifies it’s suitable for French Press, or you might end up with a subpar experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the Ideal Coffee Grind Size for a Tasty French Press Brew?

For the best flavor, coarse grind is the gold standard for French press. It allows for optimal extraction without slipping through the mesh filter.

Can You Use Pre-Ground Coffee You’d Find at the Store for Your French Press, or Should It Be Freshly Ground?

While pre-ground coffee is convenient, it’s often too fine for a French press. Freshly ground beans to a coarse texture make a notable difference in taste and prevent grounds in your cup.

How Do You Determine the Right Amount of Coffee To Use for Each Cup Made With a French Press?

The right amount of coffee depends on your taste preference, but a general guide is about one tablespoon of coffee for every four ounces of water or a 1:12 ratio.

Is There a Specific Coffee-To-Water Ratio That Should Be Used for Brewing With a French Press?

Yes, a commonly recommended ratio is between 1:12 and 1:16, which means 1 part coffee to every 12-16 parts water. Find what works best for you—some prefer 60-70 grams of coffee per liter of water.

Will the Coffee Be Negatively Affected if the Brew Time in the French Press Is Too Long or Too Short?

Definitely. Too long, and your coffee can become bitter. Too short, and you may find it weak. Aim for about four minutes of brew time for a balanced cup.

Does the Water Temperature Affect the Quality of French Press Coffee and if So, What’s the Optimal Temperature?

Water temperature is key! Too hot, and you’ll risk bitterness. Aim for water just off the boil, around 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit, to extract the perfect flavor.

which coffee brewing method takes the longest

Which coffee brewing method takes the longest? What about the quickest? In my ten years of working in coffee, I’ve learned the ins and outs of practically every type of brewer.

Here are the short answers: Cold Brew takes the longest because you are trading hot water for extended brew times (in the hours, or even days!) What about the quickest? That depends if you factor in prep time.

The Aeropress has every brewer beat, from set-up to cup. But if we’re talking about brew time exclusively, an espresso machine clocks in at a speedy 20 to 35 seconds.

In this guide, we dissect brew durations and do some real-world testing on the most popular coffee brewers out there. Whether you’re a time-conscious individual needing quick caffeination, or a connoisseur with the patience to do a longer, more involved brew, we’ve got you covered!

which coffee brewing method takes the longest

Key Takeaways

  • Cold brew takes the longest to brew, ranging from several hours to a couple of days. If we only consider hot coffee, a moka pot takes a while to make a small cup.
  • Espresso from a machine has the quickest brew time, but an Aeropress is the fastest if preparation time is included. Pour-over drippers, French presses, and other similar manual brewing devices will take a few minutes longer than an Aeropress.
  • The best brewing method for you is the one you like best, as well as the one you’re willing to spend time and effort on.

Brewing Times in a Nutshell

The length of the whole brewing process is largely determined by how your coffee brewer brews — or how it squeezes the tasty solubles out of the ground coffee. Each type of brewing device approaches this somewhat differently, with distinct results in the cup as well.

Slowest Brewing Method: Cold Brew

Cold brew coffee is a brewing method that involves brewing coarsely ground coffee with cool water for a prolonged period, resulting in a concentrate that’s intense, less acidic, and shelf-stable.

Just how lengthy is this process? As fast as six hours for small-sized cold brew drippers, up to extended steeping times of 24 hours.

Very Quick Brewing Method: Aeropress

Originally designed as an espresso maker, the Aeropress has become well-regarded as a travel-friendly brewer that can make brewed coffee in dozens of different ways.

Using the classic recipe on their website can get you a cup in no more than two minutes!

Quickest Brewing Method: Espresso

Never mind the major equipment investment or the complexity of dialing in a shot. In terms of raw coffee brewing speed, nothing beats the 20 to 35 seconds it takes to brew an espresso!

How Other Popular Brewers Stack Up

What about drip coffeemakers, pour-over brewers, and French presses? These brew methods are among the most popular for home use. You most likely won’t have to spend more than ten minutes making coffee in the morning with one of these.

But the proof is in the pudding, so time for some testing!

Comparing Brew Methods: Our Considerations

Sure, we can look up the most popular recipes for each method, note down the brew times, and call it a day. But making coffee involves some preparation, which adds at least a few significant minutes to your routine.

Also, some of these methods are more involved than others, which might matter to you especially if you have trouble blowing away the cobwebs during early morning brews!

I brewed five cups of coffee end to end using the most common home brewers and assessed each on the following.

Preparation Time

Grinding your coffee fresh will always give you more aromatic and tastier results, so that’s step one. Heating water in a kettle is another prep step, at least for three of our manual brewing methods. The last part involves getting your brewer ready, setting up its filter system, and putting the coffee grounds in.

Actual Brewing Time

The moment hot water hits the coffee grounds, yummy coffee solubles begin to make their way into your cup or server. This entire process of extraction constitutes our actual brewing time.

Difficulty Level

Shorter does not always mean simpler! I decided to note down how simple or meticulous each brew method is. Some might prefer a “set and forget” approach, while others might enjoy a more involved ritual.

Drip Coffee Maker

This classic coffee brewer is a staple in almost every household. All the prep you need involves grinding your beans, filling the tank with water, and putting ground coffee into the filter.

Drip Coffeemaker Prep Time

Our drip coffee maker was ready to brew in under two minutes

This brewer takes the least effort to use. To begin brewing coffee, all you need to do is turn on the switch, wait for the coffee to drip into the pot, and serve!

Drip Coffeemaker Brew Time

And done brewing in three minutes, easy-peasy

French Press

As far as manual brewers go, the French press is popular due to its reusable filter and straightforward brewing approach. To prepare your brew, you need to grind your coffee, heat some water in a kettle, and place your coffee grounds in the carafe with the plunger removed.

French Press Prep Time

The French press was ready to brew in about ninety seconds

Brewing on a French press involves pouring water into your grounds, stirring, and… well, that’s almost it! Most of the four to six-minute brew time involves waiting for your coffee grounds to steep in the hot water. Once you’ve reached your target time, plunge the filter down and serve.

Pouring brewed coffee from french press

From steep to serve, it’ll take a minimum of five minutes on the French press

Pour Over

If you’re a coffee enthusiast, chances are you’ve heard of the pour-over technique. This method breaks down the auto drip coffee maker into a manual, controllable affair. Prep work involves grinding coffee, boiling water in a kettle, and wetting a paper filter placed in the brewer before adding the ground coffee.

Pourover _Prep Time

It took me three minutes to get my pour-over setup together

Of all the manual methods, the pour-over requires the most finesse. You have to pour gently and in stages to make the most out of the relatively short brew time.

And another three minutes for the brew to finish

Moka Pot

The moka pot is another classic brewing device that makes a concentrated cup of coffee, similar to an espresso. In addition to grinding coffee, some assembly is required before you can brew.

To prepare a moka pot, fill the bottom chamber with water, add finely-ground coffee to the filter basket, screw on the top chamber, and place it on the stove.

Moka Pot Prep Time

Two and a half minutes and my moka pot was ready to go

The brew begins when you turn the stove on. Depending on your heat source and the size of your Moka pot, it may take a few minutes of waiting before the first drops of coffee appear on the top chamber. Manage the heat setting until the liquid stops flowing, and pour out the concentrated brew into a small cup to enjoy.

My induction-capable moka pot took more than 6 minutes to brew a single serving

Aeropress

The Aeropress is a versatile little brewer. There are several ways to use one (check out our regular and inverted recipes here), but for this test, I opted to use the manufacturer’s recommended recipe.

Apart from grinding your beans and heating water in a kettle, some assembly is required. Affix the pre-wet filter and filter cap onto the brew chamber and place the whole thing on top of your cup. Pour the grinds into the chamber, and you’re ready to brew.

Aeropress Prep Time

Aeropress ready to brew in under two minutes!

Brewing is done in four simple steps: Pour in hot water, swirl or stir the wet coffee grounds, attach the plunger, and press down into your cup until the chamber is empty.

Summary and Conclusion

The chart below will tell you how much time and effort each brewing method requires, based on a one-cup serving.

  • Drip Coffeemakers are by far the easiest to use. And if you’re just making coffee for yourself, you’ll be done in about five minutes. Expect the brew time to go up for larger servings.
  • The Aeropress stands out for being quick and easy, and clean-up is a breeze too! It can be challenging to brew coffee for a crowd though, so keep that in mind.
  • Despite a moka pot’s complexity and lengthy brew time, it’s the way to go if you want an espresso-like beverage without investing in a proper machine.

Some brew methods do take longer than others, and it’s important to pick the one that suits your lifestyle.
But time shouldn’t be the sole deciding factor in your brew. After all, the best coffee is the one you like. Try out these methods, and see for yourself which ones are worth putting the time and effort into!

Dutch Bros Vegan Drinks

Finding vegan options at restaurants and coffeehouses isn’t always easy. Unfortunately, some establishments don’t have any products made sans animal-based products, despite the growing number of vegans in the United States.

The Dutch Bros drive-through coffee chain, established in 1992, isn’t one of the U.S. food and drink vendors to exclude vegans. The Oregon-born business offers vegan-friendly flavors, milk alternatives, and beverages. We’ll introduce you to some of them below.

Dutch Bros Vegan Drinks

Roasty Roundup: Dutch Bros. Vegan Drinks to Try

Just because you’re looking for something vegan doesn’t mean you’re limited to plain coffee. Dutch Bros has an impressive lineup of delicious drinks that are vegan-friendly, and we’re sharing 11 of them.

Oat Milk Kicker

We’re starting our list strong with a DB classic, The Kicker! Ordered with no substitutions, the combination of espressos, half-and-half, and Irish cream syrup isn’t vegan. However, if you ask the “broista” to ditch the half-and-half and use creamy oat milk instead, you’ll end up with something vegan-friendly.

Nutty Irishman Cold Brew

Next on our list of Dutch Bros vegan options is the Nutty Irishman Cold Brew. It’s an excellent choice for people who prefer their caffeinated pick-me-ups to have hazelnut flavors.

The next time you visit the coffee chain, ask for a cold brew with non-dairy milk, hazelnut syrup, and Irish cream syrup added to it. No Soft Top topping, though. DB doesn’t make that with non-dairy or plant-based milk, so it isn’t vegan.

Cold Brew/Nitro Cold Brew Coffee

A cup of regular or nitro cold brew from Dutch Bros Coffee falls into the vegan category because no dairy or animal ingredients are involved when you sip it black. If you’re someone who doesn’t love drinking black coffee, you can add flavored syrup and a splash of non-dairy creaminess like coconut milk, oat milk, or almond milk.

Americano

Made by blending water with a few espresso shots, the classic Americano is always vegan when enjoyed sans add-ins.

If you want yours to have a creamier texture or additional flavor, you can ask the “broista” to make yours with your non-dairy milk of choice or one of Dutch Bros Coffee’s many coffee syrup options.

Smoothie

Enjoy the vegan version of any DB smoothie by simply requesting that your drink be made without a whipped cream topping. Four smoothies live on the franchise’s permanent drink menu: Peach, Strawberry, Green Apple, and Mango.

911 with Almond Milk

The 911 is a Dutch Bros classic and the drink of choice for the busiest customers who need to keep their energy levels high at all times.

The standard recipe calls for six shots of espresso — Yep, you read that right: SIX shots. It’s the most caffeinated of all Dutch Bros drinks. — plus Irish cream syrup and half-and-half. However, you can enjoy a vegan-friendly version by substituting almond milk for the half-and-half.

Double Torture

Dutch Bros workers make the Double Torture by combining a generous helping of espresso with chocolate milk, vanilla syrup, and a whipped cream topping.

However, you can make this classic menu item vegan by switching your choice of milk — go for almond or oat milk — and asking for no whipped topping. Give your vegan version of the beverage its chocolatey flavor by adding chocolate sauce to the mix. There you have it: a Double Torture made of vegan ingredients.

Iced Soy Annihilator

The Iced Soy Annihilator is a perfect vegan-friendly option for anyone hoping to pick up a sweet treat on their morning (or afternoon) coffee run. Made of rich espresso, chocolate macadamia nut syrup, and soy milk, this version of the Annihilator is a popular choice among DB’s vegan customers.

Cinnamon Swirl Oat Milk Latte

The Cinnamon Swirl Oat Milk Latte is another sweet vegan beverage you can find at Dutch Bros. It’s a simple drink made by combining espresso with oat milk, cinnamon, and vanilla, and it’s a solid choice for anyone steering clear of animal products.

Peach Tea

Non-coffee drinkers can’t miss out on Dutch Bros Coffee’s Peach Tea. This vegan beverage is made with your choice of green or black tea and peach syrup.

If you want tea but aren’t feeling particularly peachy, you’re in luck. Every Dutch Bros tea except the Astronaut, Trixie, and Dutch Mojito are vegan friendly. The coffee franchise has plenty of tea options containing vegan-friendly syrups, so you’ll have no trouble finding something to sip on.

Dirty Chai

The Dutch Bros Dirty Chai is a popular drink among the franchise’s vegan customers. It’s probably so well-loved because of what a good flavor combination rich espresso and spicy chai tea creates. Just select a vegan milk option like oat milk when you order.

What’s Not Vegan at Dutch Bros?

Non-vegan items at Dutch Bros include:

  • Dairy milks
  • Dutch Chocolate blend
  • Half-and-half/Soft Top (whipped half-and-half)
  • Whipped cream
  • Any Dutch Frost
  • Caramel sauce
  • White chocolate sauce and sugar-free white chocolate sauce
  • Almond Roca syrup
  • English toffee syrup
  • Pumpkin sauce
  • Eggnog
  • All food items

This isn’t an exhaustive list of non-vegan DB items, as the franchise uses ingredients that contain natural flavors that may or not be derived from animals. According to VegansBaby, Dutch Bros Rebel, hazelnut, and brown sugar cinnamon syrups have cane sugar, and those may or may not be vegan.

To stay on the safe side, consult your DB “broista” as you order; they should be able to help ensure every ingredient in your cup is vegan-friendly.

Is Dutch Bros Vegan-Friendly?

While plenty of Dutch Bros Coffee’s menu items have non-vegan ingredients, several do not. Plus, you can always make substitutions and customize your drink until it meets vegan standards.

So yes, DB is a vegan-friendly establishment, as each location has plenty of dairy-free and non-animal-derived ingredients in stock.

This Baratza Encore review comes from our favorite award-winning barista, Austin Childress.

Austin is a regular on our YouTube channel and he’s been using the Baratza Encore as his at home grinder for years.

Baratza Encore Review

Key Takeaways

  • The Baratza Encore is celebrated for its 40 individual grind settings, offering a versatile range for various brewing methods, from espresso to French press.
  • Designed with the home barista in mind, the Encore is user-friendly and compact, featuring durable steel burrs for consistent grinding and a thermal overload cutout to prevent overheating.
  • While the Encore excels in many areas, it lacks advanced features some home baristas desire, is not ideal for Turkish coffee or non-pressurized portafilter espresso machines, and is considered somewhat slow.

Check out the video below or keep reading to find out what he loves about it, and what he thinks can be improved.

Know Before You Buy

A product is only as strong as the company that created it. Fortunately for anyone considering the Encore, Baratza has been working to prove its strength for over 20 years now.

The Baratza Encore Design

baratza encore design

Because Seattle is known for its coffee enthusiasts, it’s only fitting that Baratza would enlist the talents of the city’s experts to design the Encore. And naturally, the company considered the home coffee brewer’s needs during the development of the Encore.

The Baratza Encore is a conical, high-carbon steel burr grinder ideal for home use. Because the machine’s primary purpose is to produce consistent grinds for many java drinkers, the Encore has a whopping 40 grind settings. We appreciate the variety and think you will, too, but that’s not all we like about this machine.

Things We Like

  • The Encore isn’t a blade grinder. Instead, unlike many other machines, it has burrs that can provide a more consistent grind size on a wide range of settings.
  • Since the Encore is easy to set up and using it doesn’t require any special skills, it makes a decent entry-level burr grinder.
  • The Encore doesn’t take up much space on your kitchen counter.
  • You can choose one of two bean hopper capacities: 8 or 17 ounces.
  • The Baratza Encore is easy to clean and comes with a cleaning brush!
  • The motor allows for longer grinder times than some other machines. Plus, there’s a thermal overload cut-off to prevent overheating.

Room for Improvement

  • It’s not the most affordable grinder, which is somewhat disappointing because it has relatively simple features compared to other products.
  • It’s not the best grinder for espresso, which won’t be a problem if your brewer has a pressurized portafilter, as those are pretty forgiving. However, if your machine doesn’t have one, we recommend not choosing the Encore as your dedicated espresso grinder.
  • It doesn’t have the extra features — like a screen, digital timer, or dose controlling tools — dedicated home baristas want.
  • It’s a rather slow grinder.

What Stands Out About the Baratza Encore

Plenty of features make the Baratza Encore stand out, including:

Stainless Steel Burrs

The Baratza Encore is a burr coffee grinder; in our opinion, it makes a better cup of joe than a blade grinder. Why? Because burr grinders use two revolving, abrasive surfaces to grind coffee beans. Blade grinders just cut them to pieces.

Ultimately, burr grinders provide superb grind consistency (a.k.a., uniform-sized coffee particles), which keep your drip coffee makers and espresso machines from getting clogged as they brew your cup.

Additionally, burr-ground beans help you make the most of your coffee flavor. If they produce too much heat, coffee grinders can strip the beans of their flavor-filled oils and lower the quality of their taste. However, burr grinders create less friction than blade coffee grinders, so they don’t heat the grounds as much.

Baratza uses high-carbon steel burrs, which are more susceptible to oxidation and rust than the ceramic that other companies often use. But don’t worry; the oil on your coffee beans will help prevent the burrs from rusting.

baratza encore conical burrs

The Baratza Encore has conical steel burrs, not flat ones, which means they are quieter than the flat burrs you’d find on a more expensive commercial grinder. Besides, flat burrs create more heat from friction, reducing your brew’s taste quality.

40 Grind Settings

Since you’re a serious coffee lover, we’re willing to bet you have plenty of coffee-making tools at your disposal. And if you do, you likely know that some coffee grind sizes are only appropriate for certain brewers.

For example, you need extra-coarse coffee for cold brew, a coarse grind for your percolator and French press, medium-sized grounds for your automatic drip machine, medium-fine coffee grounds for your Moka pot, and a fine grind for your espresso machine.

baratza encore fine and medium grind coffee grounds

Fortunately, the Baratza Encore boasts 40 individual grind options between 250 and 1,200 microns. With such a wide range of grind settings, you won’t have any problems making sure your coffee grounds are the right size for almost any brewing method you use in the morning.

Pro-tip:

If you’re unsure which Encore grind setting to use, check out our detailed coffee grind size chart here

Coffee Grounds Bin and Bean Hopper Capacity

baratza encore hopper

The Baratza Encore’s hopper can hold up to 17 ounces of whole coffee beans and keep them fresh until you’re ready to grind them. If you don’t need to store that much joe, use the eight-ounce hopper and save the nine-ounce hopper extension (which comes at no extra cost) for when you’ll be grinding and brewing for a crowd.

The grounds bin isn’t big; it only holds five ounces of ground coffee. This might be a bummer for some, but the logic here is that you’ll have fresher coffee each time by leaving fewer grounds in the bin.

Portaholder

Baratza designed the Encore’s Portaholder with the espresso enthusiast in mind. The Portaholder gives you a convenient place to store your espresso machine’s portafilter during the grinding process.

Ease of Setup and Usage

As any entry-level grinder should be, the Baratza Encore is easy to set up and use. Sure, you’ll initially need to attach a few pieces and possibly make a few adjustments, but with the instruction manual in hand and our handy review video playing, you’ll have your grinder figured out in minutes.

baratza encore pulse button

Once you set up the coffee grinder, add your beans, select a grind setting, and power the machine on. For a long grind session, you can use the pulse button on the front (the coffee grinder will only run while you hold the button) or the on/off knob.

Build

baratza encore build

Fewer things are more annoying than a coffee grinder that only works for a few seconds before starting to smell hot. Fortunately, that’s not a factor with the Encore. It has a high-torque DC motor that creates less heat and allows for longer grinding cycles than other motors. And should you overuse your grinder, the Encore has an automatically resetting thermal overload cutout that keeps the motor from overheating.

The Baratza Encore has speed controls that keep the burr rotation at 550 RPM. This slow speed helps beans feed smoothly through the burrs, reduces heat, and produces a quieter grind.

Easy and Quick Cleaning

Some coffee grinders are a pain to clean — maybe that’s why so many are hesitant about buying one. You won’t run into that difficulty with the Encore. After you unplug the machine and turn the grind size dial to the coarsest setting, you can easily remove the hopper and rubber seal to get to the burrs and give them a good wipedown.

Be sure to clean this electric grinder thoroughly; you don’t want to leave any coffee particles stuck anywhere. Also, remember that water humidity can cause the burrs to rust, so please, never use soap and water on them. Instead, use the included cleaning brush or a soft cloth to remove excess coffee grounds.

Alternative Grinder Options

If this entry-level coffee grinder doesn’t seem to meet your needs, perhaps you’ll consider trusting one of these alternatives to grind your favorite beans.

Get a more advanced model.

If you don’t think the Encore is powerful enough to get the job done, check out the Baratza Virtuoso+. This machine is like an upgraded version of the company’s Encore in terms of price and features. Check out this comparison of the two conical burr grinders.

However, if you don’t feel like reading, note that the Virtuoso has more advanced features, like a digital timer, sturdier build, burrs that don’t lose calibration, and the ability to grind faster.

Go with a manual option.

More devoted coffee drinkers may be interested in manual grinders, especially since the original burr grinders were manual. If you’re that kind of java purist, consider the JavaPresse manual grinder; it’s an overall excellent choice.

This tool is quieter than an electric coffee grinder, dispenses just how much you want to grind, and cuts beans fine enough for Turkish coffee. The grinder’s brushed stainless steel also lasts five times as long as regular stainless steel.

FAQs

Is the Baratza Encore loud?

A common complaint among Baratza Encore users is that, though lauded for being quiet, the machine is still somewhat noisy. However, noise isn’t particularly unusual for an electric burr grinder, so you shouldn’t be concerned that you can hear your Encore working. Besides, the Encore isn’t as loud as some other grinders on the market.

How long will a Baratza Encore last?

Provided you clean your Encore regularly (about once a month) and replace its burrs when they get dull, you can expect your machine to last between seven and ten years.

How big is the Baratza Encore?

The Baratza Encore is a fairly compact, lightweight grinder, weighing only seven pounds and boasting dimensions of 4.7 by 6.3 by 13.8 inches (width by depth by height).

Is the Baratza Encore good for espresso?

Yes. Espresso grind, much like the grind settings needed for pour over, french press, and others is all about getting consistency. The Encore is excellent at delivering a consistent grind, including when you need it fine enough for a shot of espresso.

Wrap Up

We’re impressed with Baratza’s dedication to quality products in our “just throw it away” society, and that commitment shows through the Encore. It essentially has the same internal parts — burrs, motor, etc. — as one of the company’s more advanced grinders; it just lacks the extra bells and whistles some other models have.

So, if you want something that gets the job done just as well as the fancy grinders but sits in a more reasonable price range, the Encore could be what you need.

However, none of the Encore’s grind settings cut your beans to the perfect size for a Turkish coffee maker, so if that tends to be your drink of choice, this is a less-than-exceptional grinder choice for you. Most coffee and espresso enthusiasts will be happy with it, and as long as you make time for proper maintenance and regular cleaning, this automatic grinder will last for years.

Caramel Drinks at Dunkin

When you go to Dunkin’ Donuts for coffee, you’re most likely going for a treat. And what better way to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings than with a decadent and rich caramel-flavored drink? Some of the best beverages on Dunkin’s menu are the ones that include caramel.

So, if you’re itching for a new sweet and energizing drink to try, here are just a few that you can order from Dunkin’ Donuts, as well as some ways to craft your own yummy caramel creation.

Caramel Drinks at Dunkin

How to Order Caramel Drinks at Dunkin’ Donuts

Before we jump into our list of caramel coffee options, let’s look at the customizations available at Dunkin’ to order a deliciously sweet caramel drink whether you prefer regular coffee, iced coffee, cold brew, americanos, lattes, macchiatos, cappuccinos, or blended beverages.

Caramel Swirl Sauce

The most essential ingredient that Dunkin’ adds to any of their caramel drinks that are already on the menu is their specialty Caramel Swirl Sauce. This isn’t exactly a syrup and is instead a creamy and sweet caramel flavor that really boosts the taste of your favorite caffeinated sip.

Caramel Drizzle

Aside from that already delicious addition, you can also ask for a caramel drizzle on top of your drink of choice, which just gives another layer of decadence to any beverage.

Caramel Drinks at Dunkin’ Donuts

Now that you know how Dunkin’ adds caramel flavor to their sweet and rich drinks, here are some options that are either already on the menu or that we highly recommend you try next time you stop by the coffee shop.

Caramel Craze Signature Latte

Starting off with the most popular pick, which is definitely why it’s listed as a Signature Latte, is the Caramel Craze. This is a deliciously sweet drink, which can be made as a hot or iced latte, that features rich espresso and your milk of choice.

In the mix, there’s also the delicious caramel swirl sauce that gives it a buttery taste and a nice decadent layer of whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and cinnamon dusting on top. This beverage is the epitome of caramel coffee flavors!

Salted Caramel Cold Foam Cold Brew

While this next one seems to be only available on the menu during certain seasons of the year, the Salted Caramel Cold Foam Cold Brew coffee simply had to be added. You can’t talk about caramel drinks without mentioning this showstopper.

In their smooth cold brew coffee, Dunkin’ adds a salted caramel flavoring to it, as well as a delicious cloud of salted caramel cold foam that has a burnt sugar topping. This makes for a creamy and delicious coffee that has a rich sweetness.

Caramel Macchiato

When it comes to caramel coffee beverages, there is one drink that’s universally known for its sweet and decadent caramel flavor. The Caramel Macchiato at Dunkin Donuts is made with a bottom layer of iced or steamed milk and a top layer of rich fresh-brewed espresso shots.

It’s finished with some yummy caramel drizzle, which really ties it all together. This beverage can be made with any type of milk and honestly, it’s perfect whether you use whole milk or a non-dairy milk alternative!

Caramel Mocha Latte

Though the Caramel Mocha Latte isn’t technically a menu item at Dunkin’ anymore, it’s super easy to still order yourself a Caramel Mocha Latte. The sweetness of the caramel flavor complements the richness of the mocha flavor to give you a very delicious and comforting coffee.

Since both the caramel swirl sauce and the mocha swirl sauce are options to add to an iced or hot latte, that’s really all you have to do. It also doesn’t hurt to add some whipped cream or caramel drizzle to the top, as long as you’re not watching how many calories you’re consuming.

Caramel Swirl Iced Coffee

As you can tell, the caramel swirl sauce is what really brings out the delicious taste of caramel in a majority of the drinks at Dunkin’. That’s why it’s a great idea to add it to your favorite beverage pick the next time you go through the Dunkin’ drive-through.

One of the many delicious ways to do this is to order an iced coffee and ask to add in the caramel swirl sauce and whatever milk type you desire. This makes for a rich and sweet cup of cold joe to give your morning a little caffeine boost.

Caramel Swirl Frozen Coffee

The decadence of the caramel swirl sauce can be really showcased when added to one of Dunkin’s frozen coffees. Just like how it sounds, Frozen Coffee is made by blending concentrated coffee, milk, ice, and sweetener together.

By adding the specialty caramel sauce, you get even more of a treat. Plus, asking for some whipped cream and caramel drizzle on top will really bring together all the sweet and decadent flavors.

Caramel Swirl Iced Cappuccino

The last caramel drink concoction worth mentioning is an Iced Cappuccino that’s got some of the caramel swirl sauce added to it. This is a frothy blend of foamed milk and shots of espresso that’s served over ice to create a delicious drink that has a bold coffee flavor.

With the addition of caramel swirl syrup, you get an indulgent coffee flavor that complements the consistency of the beverage beautifully. It’s definitely one we’d recommend!

Wrapping Up

Overall, if you’re a fan of the classic flavor of caramel, one of the best places to go for a tasty treat of a drink is Dunkin’ Donuts. With their sweet and creamy specialty caramel swirl sauce and their decadent and rich caramel drizzle, you’ll have everything you need to create a real caramel delight.

These ingredients are great when paired with any of Dunkin’s coffee options, whether you’re someone who prefers something hot or iced. So, on your next trip to Dunkin’, make sure you try one of their many delicious caramel coffee drinks.

Citric Acid for Descaling

Descaling your coffee machine is not as scary or involved as you might first think. It actually only takes a few steps, can be done on a monthly or bi-monthly rotation, and requires very few products to get the job done well.

Although we hope you are washing your coffee pot and grinds holder daily to remove any excess coffee and oil, the inside of your machine needs attention in another way. Water will create a chalky substance on the inside of your brewing device that isn’t harmful to ingest, but will begin impacting the taste and efficiency of your coffee machine if left unscaled.

These scales can build up and create a crusty substance on the inside of your machine, even in the parts you can’t see. Depending on the hardness of your water, you should be descaling your coffee machine about every one to two months.

Citric Acid for Descaling

What To Use to Descale Your Coffee Machine

Of course, there is a slew of coffee-descaling products available on the market. They all claim to be the best and overcharge for what could be an easy solution. Don’t waste your money.

Most people will use distilled white vinegar. It comes in large quantities for very cheap and is highly effective. However, vinegar certainly leaves a smell (throughout the whole house!) and will often leave a lingering taste that takes several rinse cycles to get rid of.

This is unappealing to the senses and also creates more of a hassle in the process of properly descaling a coffee machine. Remembering to descale in the first place is half the battle – adding several rinse cycles on tops will only make it harder to complete the task properly each month.

The easiest, most effective, and cheapest option for effectively descaling your coffee machine is to use good old citric acid.

woman pouring Citric Acid into electric kettle

Using Citric Acid to Descale Your Coffee Machine

Citric acid is easy to find in most grocery or convenience stores, usually comes in large quantities that will last for a long time, is cheap, and is not harmful to the environment.

Citric acid also has no smell, doesn’t leave a taste, and is not harmful if ingested by accident (although it’s certainly not recommended by anyone, especially us here at Roasty).

Because of these components, citric acid works great for descaling your coffee machine and it only takes a few steps to do it!

How To Use Citric Acid to Descale Your Coffee Pot

You only need two things when descaling your coffee pot with citric acid – water and 2 tablespoons of citric acid. Start with a coffee pot and filter that have already been cleaned with soap and water.

Step One

Fill the water reservoir of your coffee machine to the max line.

Step Two

Pour 1-2 Tablespoons of citric acid into the water reservoir and stir in slightly. If you descale your coffee machine regularly (monthly) you can maintain your machine with just one tablespoon of citric acid.

If it is your first time descaling in a while though, we suggest using at least two tablespoons.

Step Three

Run your coffee machine on the cleaning setting or on its longest brew session.

Step Four

Empty the water from the coffee pot and discard.

Step Five

Run one cycle of just water, without the citric acid or any coffee grinds, to ensure that the machine is thoroughly rinsed through.

And that’s it! All it takes is two simple brew sessions and your machine should be back to its sparkling self!

Can I Descale My Coffee Machine With Citric Acid?

Yes, using citric acid in the descaling process is safe and easy to do. Follow our step-by-step guide above!

Should I Descale With Vinegar or Citric Acid?

Either cleaner works great for descaling your coffee machine, but vinegar leaves a smell and is prone to leave a taste if not properly rinsed out. Citric acid is odorless and flavorless, making it far more easy to rinse out, while also taking up less product than vinegar.

What Is the Best Thing to Use to Descale My Coffee Machine?

Citric acid is the easiest and most convenient descaler to use on coffee machines.

How Much Citric Acid Do I Use for Descaling?

2 tablespoons of citric acid will thoroughly descale the entirety of your coffee machine and leave it ready to use with just one rinse! If you maintain regular descaling, you can get away with using one tablespoon of citric acid.

Starbucks Can Drinks

Without much delay, let’s get into all of the Starbucks drinks that you can purchase in cans for an easier drinking experience and one less stop in your daily routine.

Coffee Doubleshot Energy

Starting off strong, literally, let’s look at the Doubleshot Energy canned drinks. Specifically, the Coffee Doubleshot Energy, which is the most simple of the Doubleshot Energy options. It consists of only coffee and skim milk, creating a creamy and rich flavor.

It also features ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins to produce a healthy focus effect. Full of natural energy and a simple taste, you can’t go wrong with this pick.

Mocha Doubleshot Energy

If you want a bit more flavor added to this energizing drink, Starbucks also has plenty of options that do just that. The Mocha Doubleshot Energy has all of the great things the regular Doubleshot Energy does, with a decadent chocolate flavor added in.

Considering mocha is one of the most popular flavors at the actual Starbucks coffee shop, we aren’t surprised it made its way into a canned form, as well. It’s like caffeinated chocolate milk!

Caramel Doubleshot Energy

You may not be much of a chocolate fan, and that’s okay because if you still have a sweet tooth, there’s also the Caramel Doubleshot Energy. This is one of the newer flavor options available in the Doubleshot Energy collection.

Alongside the coffee and skim milk, you also get a sweet and rich caramel taste that’s the perfect start to any morning. Plus, there’s still the inclusion of the natural ingredients of ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins.

Vanilla Doubleshot Energy

Looking towards a more simple and classic flavor, the Vanilla Doubleshot Energy is a perfectly sweet version of the Doubleshot Energy. The addition of vanilla doesn’t take away from the richness of the drink, instead, it complements it.

So, if you’re someone who is happy with a vanilla latte, you’ll love having these stocked up in your fridge for easy grabbing.

White Chocolate Doubleshot Energy

The last of the Doubleshot Energy options is the White Chocolate Doubleshot Energy. Another decadent pick, this has a lighter and more sweet chocolatey flavor than the mocha.

Apart from the dessert-like taste, you also get the enhanced focus benefits from the ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins. Not to mention, all of the Starbucks Doubleshot Energy cans contain more than 75 milligrams of caffeine.

Caffè Mocha Tripleshot Energy

If you thought the Doubleshot Energy was enough, you’re in for a surprise. The Caffè Mocha Tripleshot Energy is just one of the flavored coffee cans that contain 225 milligrams of caffeine.

This chocolate drink has just a touch of flavor, a touch of cream, and a whole lot of energy. Plus, the Tripleshot Energy beverages also have ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins just like the previously mentioned canned drinks.

French Vanilla Tripleshot Energy

Next up is the French Vanilla Tripleshot Energy, which is not only different from the Vanilla Doublshot Energy in its caffeine content but also in its vanilla flavor. While there may just be a touch of it alongside the cream, the French vanilla flavor creates a more rich and complex taste.

This, paired with the strong coffee, makes for an intense, energizing, and creamy sip that’s perfect to get your busy day started and keeps you going.

Caramel Tripleshot Energy

Just like the Doubleshot Energy, there’s also a Caramel Tripleshot Energy for a more rich and more syrupy sweet flavor. Though, there still isn’t a large amount of sweetness or creaminess when combined with all of the coffee present.

Regardless, this is a delicious choice for when you need a quick boost of extra energy sans the long lines at the coffee shop.

Milk Chocolate Zero Sugar Tripleshot Energy

The last of the Tripleshot Energy options is actually one that also features absolutely no sugar. So, if you’re looking for a bit of a healthier pick, the Milk Chocolate Zero Sugar Tripleshot Energy is for you.

A single can only contains 90 calories, which is a lot less than the other Tripleshot Energy drinks. There’s still a bold and chocolatey flavor present with all of the focus-enhancing ingredients of ginseng, Guarana, and B vitamins.

Espresso Salted Caramel Cream

Moving onto some smaller cans, the Espresso Salted Caramel Cream provides an even faster shot of energy. Made with brewed Starbucks espresso that’s rich and bold, and just a small amount of salted caramel flavor and cream, this is an easy-to-drink caffeine boost.

The espresso cans are 6.5 ounces compared to the Doubleshot Energy and Tripleshot Energy cans, which are 15 ounces. However, there’s still a good amount of caffeine present: a total of 120 milligrams.

Espresso and Cream

If you’re not particularly a fan of salted caramel, there is another smaller option that also contains 120 milligrams of caffeine. The Espresso and Cream is a simpler take on the previous canned beverage.

This one is made with only the brewed Starbucks espresso and just a touch of cream, enough to give it a delicious flavor while keeping the strong taste. Some have even said this one is better than the salted caramel version!

Black Nitro Cold Brew

Moving onto a slightly bigger canned drink, the Black Nitro Cold Brew is a 9.6-ounce beverage that’s made with a dark roast and is unsweetened. However, as is the Nitro Cold Brew at Starbucks coffee shops, this is a creamy sip with a naturally sweet taste.

When it comes to the cans, nitrogen is infused into the drink the moment you open it. Instructions recommend tilting it once before pouring it right into a cold glass for the best results.

Splash of Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

While the option above is delicious on its own, maybe you want just a touch more creaminess. That’s where the Splash of Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew comes in. This is a slightly sweeter and creamier nitro cold brew than the above drink.

It’s almost exactly like if you order a nitro cold brew with sweet cream at your local Starbucks, just in a more convenient package!

Dark Cocoa Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

Chocolate fans, worry not, because there’s also one of these specialty nitro cold brew cans for you, as well. The Dark Cocoa Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew is a decadently flavored creamy canned coffee that hits all the right spots.

Once opened, the nitrogen is infused into a slightly sweetened sweet cream cold brew that’s got just a touch of dark cocoa flavor. Not too much and not too little, you’ll be excited to start your mornings with this pick.

Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew

Of course, a Starbucks menu classic had to be replicated into these unique nitro cold brew cans. The Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew is a fan favorite and one that you can get canned for convenience.

This drink is made with natural vanilla and fig flavors to complement the complexity of the dark roast cold brew. It’s smooth, creamy, and just slightly sweet for a satisfying sip.

Pumpkin Cream Nitro Cold Brew

This next one is the last of the nitro cold brew selections but is actually one that’s only sold in certain stores around the fall season. The Pumpkin Cream Nitro Cold Brew is reminiscent of the infamous pumpkin-flavored drinks that you can find on the autumn Starbucks menu.

While it is a specialty drink that you may not be able to find everywhere, it’s definitely worth it if you do. The spiced creamy flavor complements the nitrogen-infused cold brew really well.

White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino Mini

You might be familiar with the rather popular Frappuccino bottled coffee drinks from Starbucks and, if you like those, you’ll be happy to know that they’re also available in a miniature version. The White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino Mini is just one of the 6.5-ounce Frappuccino Mini flavors.

This is much sweeter and creamier than the previous canned drink options. It’s got a decadent and rich white chocolate flavor and tastes more like a treat.

Caramel Frappuccino Mini

The other option available in this unique canned beverage is the Caramel Frappuccino Mini. A sweeter and more rich dessert-like drink in a small and energizing form.

It’s enough to satisfy your sweet tooth and give you that caffeine boost quickly and easily. The bottled version of the Caramel Frappuccino is already super popular, so it’s convenient that it’s also available in a miniature can.

Strawberry Lemonade Starbucks Refresher

Moving on from coffee, let’s look at some more refreshing options. The canned Starbucks Refreshers are a little bit different from the Refershers you’ll find at the coffee shop. These are sparkling juice blends made with coconut water, real fruit juice, B vitamins, and caffeine from green coffee extract.

The Strawberry Lemonade Starbucks Refresher has flavors of sweet strawberry and tangy lemon, which complement the coconut water rather well. Overall it’s light, bubbly, and a very satisfying sip.

Peach Passionfruit Starbucks Refreshers

Another of these 12-ounce canned drinks available is the Peach Passionfruit Starbucks Refresher. The coconut water in this option is smoothed out by the rich sweet peach and tart passionfruit flavors.

The caffeine from the green coffee extract that’s present in these beverages is around the same amount that’s in an iced tea.

Black Cherry Limeade Starbucks Refreshers

The last of these Refreshers, as well as the last on our list overall, is the Black Cherry Limeade Starbucks Refresher. This one may have the brightest taste in terms of sparkling juice blends.

Featuring a crisp black cherry flavor with just a hint of zesty lime, this drink gives the coconut water a cool and sharp taste that works well alongside the real fruit juice.

Wrapping Up

Now that you have a rather extensive list of canned drink options made by Starbucks, both for coffee and refreshments, hopefully, you’ve found some that have piqued your interest. Having a ready-to-go drink available in your fridge for busy mornings or unpredictable afternoons certainly makes life a little bit easier.

You may not have time to stop at your favorite coffee shop, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without an energizing sip to get you through your day. Whether it’s a super strong Tripleshot Energy, a flavor-inducing Nitro Cold Brew, or a fizzy Refresher, there really is something for everyone.

Dutch Bros Banana Drinks

Banana probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when asked about drink flavors, but Dutch Bros proves the fruity flavor is worth considering. The Oregon-born drive-through coffee franchise includes banana flavoring in multiple beverages, and we’re walking you through some of them below.

And who knows? After reading how DB makes them work, you might want to give banana drinks a chance.

Dutch Bros Banana Drinks

Key Takeaways

  • Banana is a star ingredient in many beverages at Dutch Bros Coffee, from coffee-based treats to energy drinks.
  • Items like the Banana Split Freeze and the Banana Flapjack let banana enthusiasts enjoy the flavors of their favorite banana-based breakfast or dessert offerings in drink form.
  • Dutch Bros Coffee’s commitment to variety is evident through non-coffee options, like the Bubblegum and Sweet Sunrise. They provide fruity refreshment without any java.

Roasty Roundup: Standard and Secret Menu Dutch Bros Banana Drinks

Banana Bread Breve

Banana bread is a beloved treat. It was Delish’s most searched recipe of 2020. With a reputation like that, it’s unsurprising that Dutch Bros developed a drink inspired by it!

Meet the Banana Bread Breve. The base drink here is a breve (a blend of espresso coffee and heavy cream), and the added hazelnut and banana syrups make it taste a lot like the baked good.

Irie Freeze

Frozen coffee fanatics know they can’t go wrong with one of DB’s Blended Freeze beverages. And if they’re also craving banana flavor, they can find satisfaction with an Irie Freeze. This particular version of the chilled coffee smoothie comes with splashes of coconut and banana flavor — yum!

Fire Lizard

Did you know Dutch Bros sells more than the coffee, tea, and smoothie drinks you’d typically find at a café? DB also sells Rebel Energy Drinks. One of these is the Fire Lizard.

The Fire Lizard contains the chain’s Rebel Energy Drink base, plus splashes of strawberry, banana, and orange flavors. It doesn’t just taste great; it gives you the kick in the pants you need to make it through the day.

Banana Split

Have you ever wished you could eat ice cream for breakfast? We’ve all been there, craving a banana split in the wee hours of the morning. During those times, we’re grateful for the Dutch Bros Banana Split Freeze.

Sweet vanilla, banana, and dark chocolate flavors take the blended espresso-milk mixture to the next level. Sipping one of these in the morning will make you feel like you’re enjoying your favorite dessert for breakfast without guilt.

If you’re craving something that tastes like a Banana Split but don’t want anything frozen, try a Banana Split hot cocoa instead. It’s just as delicious. Only instead of being cool and refreshing, it’s warm and cozy.

Bubblegum

It might be surprising to find DB’s Bubblegum flavor combination on a list of the franchise’s banana drinks. However, banana is a crucial part of the equation whether you order it as a shake or sparkling soda. Banana, strawberry, and vanilla flavors play nicely in every Dutch Bros Bubblegum drink. We know it sounds like an unorthodox mixture, but don’t knock it until you try it!

The Bob

It isn’t unusual to pair up banana and coconut; they’re a perfect pair. Toss dark chocolate into the mix, and things only get better. The Bob flavor combination at Dutch Bros brings this trio together, and the result is totally yummy. Try The Bob in a Blended Freeze, hot chocolate, or shake. You won’t be disappointed.

Sweet Sunrise

The Sweet Sunrise is another one of the banana-flavored Dutch Rebels you can order when you need a solid energy boost. Banana isn’t the only fruity flavor you’ll taste in this beverage. There are orange, passion fruit, and peach flavors present, too.

The Sweet Sunrise flavor combination can also go into a shake, sparkling soda, lemonade, or iced tea. So, even if you don’t need or want a kick of caffeine, you have other options for enjoying this fruity blend.

Hawaiian

Wouldn’t it be nice to jet off on a Hawaiian adventure anytime you want? Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the luxury of doing that. But we can drive over to Dutch Bros and have a Hawaiian Lemonade. No, it’s not exactly the same, but the blend of lemonade and strawberry, peach, orange, and banana flavors gives off all of the tropical vibes. Plus, you can always close your eyes and pretend you’re drinking it on a Big Island beach.

You can also order a Hawaiian in the form of a DB Rebels Energy Drink, shake, sparkling soda, or iced tea.

Banana Cream Pie

Not much beats a slice of banana cream pie. But you don’t have to bake one to experience its flavors. The Dutch Bros Banana Cream Pie flavor combo, available in hot cocoa and shake form, gives you all the goodness of the classic dessert with minimal hassle. The next time you’re at DB, ask the broista for a Banana Cream Pie drink. The banana-white chocolate flavor blend satisfies the sweet tooth for sure.

Golden Banana

If you’re a Dutch Bros regular, you’re probably no stranger to the Golden Eagle. This flavor combination, a mixture of vanilla and caramel, is one of the franchise’s most popular, and it’s commonly enjoyed as a breve.

Add a bit of banana flavor to the mix, and the Golden Eagle becomes the Golden Banana, a sweet and creamy treat perfect for anyone fond of caramelized bananas.

Banana Flapjack

The Flapjack Chai isn’t a standard menu Dutch Bros item, but it’s a bestseller at many DB locations for sure. The beverage is made by adding salted caramel, white chocolate, and vanilla flavors to a classic chai latte. The result tastes a bit like everyone’s favorite breakfast food: pancakes!

Naturally, when you add banana flavor to the mix, the Flapjack Chai becomes the Banana Flapjack, and it brings the goodness of a stack of banana pancakes to your morning energy booster. So good!

Go Bananas!

As you can see, Dutch Bros Coffee has no shortage of banana drinks for curious coffee drinkers — non-coffee lovers can get in on the fun, too! — to try. Check out one of the standard menu items or the secret menu Golden Banana and Banana Flapjack for a fun, fruity spin on your typical DB order.

Happy Caffeinating!
