If you’re a longtime Roasty reader, you know that single-serving pod brewers, like Keurig K-Cup brewers, for example, aren’t our favorite machines. These speedy brewers have their uses, but we prefer a good old manual coffee machine, such as a pour-over, any day to get the most robust flavor possible.

However, if speed and efficiency are your biggest priorities, a quick and easy Keurig coffee maker is probably the way to go. Keurig lovers enjoy these coffee-making machines because they can produce a serviceable brew at the push of a button!

What’s to Love About Light Roast Coffee?

Dark and medium roast coffees tend to steal the spotlight, but there are many things to enjoy about lighter roasts, too.

For starters, these coffees tend to have a higher caffeine content than their darker roast counterparts, which is why they’re such a popular pick for those who need their morning cup of joe to have a little extra oomph.

Don’t mistake light roast coffee for a lackluster, too-mild beverage; the shorter roasting time preserves the original distinct flavors of the beans, resulting in a flavor that is delicate but complex. It also doesn’t have the bitter aftertaste often characteristic of darker roast varieties.

Starbucks Veranda Blend Light Roast K-Cups

Though Starbucks is often touted for serving one delectable dark roast after the other, the company’s lighter roasts are made with an equal amount of care and dedication, and Starbucks’ Veranda Blend is no exception.

These Latin American coffee beans have been a favorite of many Starbucks lovers for years because they produce a brew that’s silky smooth, full of rich flavor, and packed with a nice jolt of caffeine — 270 milligrams per 12-ounce cup, to be exact.

With this roast, which the coffee giant has perfected for over 40 years, you can expect to find notes of cocoa and nuts with a slightly tangy finish.

The beans are roasted carefully before being ground and packed into these K-Cups to ensure the resulting brew is well-balanced without being too bold.

This blend has a very smooth taste (one of the best Starbucks has to offer) and now, you can enjoy it with Keurig-brewing convenience in mind!

Gevalia Signature Blend K-Cups

On Sale

Gourmet coffee lovers, be sure to add Gevalia’s Signature Blend to your grocery store shopping list!

This brand’s delicious coffee pods landed on our list because of Gevalia’s rich history, culture, and devotion to crafting quality coffee for over 150 years.

The Swedish coffee company can trace its beginning to 1853, when Victor Theodor Engwall established a local coffee importing business in Gävle, Sweden.

As decades passed and Gevalia began growing its reputation as a gourmet coffee brand, the Signature Blend became a favorite of coffee enthusiasts.

This light roast is a bright, citrusy, and full-bodied brew with one of the richest aromas on our list. It’s a consistently sweet, robust, and refreshing blend to sip on all day long.

Things to Keep in Mind Before You Buy

Before you put your cash where your Keurig is and stock up on light roast K-Cups, you should know a few things about K-Cups and light roast coffee, especially if you’re accustomed to the qualities and aromas of medium and dark roast coffee beans.

Why does a light roast taste different than a darker roast?

Hopefully, every coffee addict knows beans roasted at different levels don’t taste the same. Why? Well, it’s all because of the art of roasting!

Roasting coffee involves many different components: timing, temperature, added spices and flavoring, and more.

During this process, as the coffee beans heat up, expand, and the moisture within them begins to evaporate, a popping or cracking sound occurs.

These “cracks” are almost like timers for roasters, as they usually signal when it’s time to remove the beans from the heat.

Darker roast coffees are cooked for a longer period over a more intense heat, which breaks down and releases the amino acids and enzymes that give the beans their sweeter, chocolatey flavor. They’re usually removed from the roaster at the second crack.

On the other hand, light roasts only make it to the first crack, which occurs when the beans reach about 385 degrees Fahrenheit. The result is a brew that’s still full of ripe, mouth-watering, and vibrant flavor.

Does light roast coffee have a high acid content?

Only a handful of coffee drinkers may know what acidity is or how it impacts a cup of coffee’s taste.

Simply stated, acidity is a bright or dry sensation that helps stimulate or animate the flavors of your joe. It’s the characteristic of the coffee that adds personality and dimension to the contents of your cup.

Lighter roasts have more acidity than other dark roast beans. The amino acids and enzymes within the beans don’t break down as much during the roasting process, which adds a lot of vibrant flavor to your coffee!

Don’t confuse the acidity of coffee with sourness, though. If your brew tastes sour, it’s not highly acidic; it’s probably tainted or spoiled. Acidity can naturally be a bit dry, but if that sensation is more intense, then you may want to toss out that batch and start brewing another one.

Can you add artificial flavors to light-roast coffee?

Many coffee enthusiasts enjoy lighter roasts because they maintain the unique flavors we mentioned above. Some of these beans are artificially flavored with caramel, French vanilla, or some other sweetener — but is that a good idea?

Well, adding artificial ingredients works well for dark roasts because more of the original coffee flavor is cooked out, making more room for artificial flavors to shine. Plus, the additives amplify and support the smokier, sweeter flavors that occur when roasting dark coffees.

However, when it comes to light roasts, we think any added sweetness taints the beans’ authentic flavor. So, if you brew a light roast K-Cup in your Keurig, we suggest brewing and drinking it black.

However, if you simply must have a little something extra in your cup, add a splash of creamer. Sometimes, your best bet is to leave your brew the way it is and add additional ingredients (in moderation, of course) to alter it to your liking.

What factors should you consider before buying K-Cups?

If our buying guide has you tempted to purchase everything on it, well, that means all of us here at Roasty are doing our jobs correctly. However, it also means you need to know what factors to keep in mind as you add box after box of K-Cups to your shopping cart.

  • Price: In general, K-Cups are more expensive than ground or whole bean products, and the cost can add up quickly. So, before committing to a Keurig or K-Cups, make sure you’ve got room in your budget for your boxes of coffee pods.
  • Quantity: How high is your coffee consumption every day? The answer will dictate how many K-Cups you’ll need. The great news is that most coffee companies offer you several quantity options, from 12 pods to 108, so no matter your java-drinking habits, you’re sure to find something that works for you.
  • Brand: As with any batch of coffee you purchase, you’ll need to make sure you’re buying from a reputable brand. Consider factors such as the coffee’s origin, whether it’s produced with Fair Trade practices, and of course, whether high-quality beans are used before you commit to the brand’s K-Cups.

The Verdict

Since their introduction, Keurig K-Cup pods have added a bit more convenience to the lives of coffee enthusiasts everywhere. For those who need a quick cup of coffee before running out the door each morning, a Keurig is an ideal way to make your morning cup quickly.

If you’re on Team Keurig, we think it’s a great idea to pop a light roast K-Cup into your machine the next time you brew. Light roast K-Cups are an excellent solution for those who crave both efficiency and delicious flavor!
